The trade itself is nice but damn he's making $16mm

I don't think it is that dumb of a trade for the Jags. An often hurt but quality older wr adds much more value to a playoff caliber team then a rebuild.

I'm guessing they restructure his deal. But regardless, I like the trade. I know he's had some injuries but a collar bone is flukey. It's not like he's a guy who's constantly dealing with high ankle sprains, etc.

This shores up a position of need for next to nothing.

Yes it carries over - 1 year remaining with about $16M on it. Look for the Texans to sign an extension and spread cost over 2-3 years.

I agree on the extension, also 18 million isn't that big of a number anymore. I think that puts him around 25th for receivers salaries these days. And for context he makes less a year than Diante Johnson.

Overall it was a smart decision to get him in place and not have to be competitive with other teams on salary. Especially in a year with a very down WR draft class.

I love using 7th round picks on productive veterans. Id do the same thing with sixth round picks.

Agree completely!

Yes, but we have struck gold in the 7th. Andre Hal, David Anderson, Zac Diles, Derek Newton were all productive. That said, let's use other teams' 7ths any day of the week.

Don't disagree. But the reason teams are willing to trade productive veterans for 6th and 7th rounders is they are generally viewed as having bad contracts. You can only go to that well once or twice because of the money involved.

This is true.

However maybe he's willing to spread the contract out over a few years with better incentives

Instead of 15.5 this year maybe 20 over 4 years with a chance at 25

He has no guarantee of getting 10m more at this point in his career after the current contract

Shaq Mason going to be released. Not surprising as he's the 5th highest paid player on the team, played horribly last year, and releasing him gets almost his entire cap hit back

I agree on Kirk likely restructuring. My point was you can't trade every 6th and 7th round pick for veterans because you simply don't have the cap space for that.

For sure, I absolutely agree. Those picks are important from a cap standpoint too, extremely cheap commodities.

I'm pretty happy with those signings to shore up some spots (I really like the Tremon Smith signing for DB depth and ST play)

Also apparently we're really looking at bringing in Greenlaw from the 49ers, hopefully that would be on a prove it deal but that would further upgrade the defense.

This makes it seem like only a 3rd from this year and the 2 and 4 are future picks.

The Texans were already tied for third most in sacks allowed in 2024.

Clearly he's not the guy. He hasn't been the guy and he won't be the guy. The Texans gave up the second most sacks in the league last year.

Maybe he'll be that guy in Washington but he is not ever going to be that guy here.

Glad to get the picks, a year too late if you ask me.

Think this was a culture move. Our line has been "finesse" for awhile. He is the leader and you weren't going to change that with him here.

let's trade away the guy responsible for 2 of the 52 sacks our line gave up.

That will help CJ next year.

How many yards in penalties was he responsible for? Those are just as bad as sacks.
He also couldn't care less about run blocking. This is addition by subtraction.
