they really aren't though.

sack = average of 6.5 yards and loss of down
false start = 5 yards and repeat the down.

you also risk getting your QB hurt with a sack.

I certainly didn't love the false starts, and his run blocking was very average, but I don't see how this makes our line any better.

and of course...how many of those penalties forced the Texans into a pass play -- instead of the original run call

the official data...

in 2024 Tunsil was called for 19 penalties

12 false starts
3 illegal formation
2 holding
1 ineligible downfield
1 personal foul

here's the kicker...in 2023 he was only called for 9 penalties...and in 2022 for 10 penalties

so a sharp increase during the 2024 season

Trade up to draft Will Campbell or Kelvin Banks. Easy.

Think this was a culture move. Our line has been "finesse" for awhile. He is the leader and you weren't going to change that with him here.
One hundred percent. DeMeco is about the team, Tunsil showed up only when he had to. Never made sense why he was a captain.

Also sends a unignorable message to the rest of the line (cough cough Howard) that they're willing to depart with an all-pro.

Should save us ~$12M against the cap this year too.

not a bad trade considering, but now the question is how do you upgrade that position for the next season?

much easier to upgrade our guards through free agency now. Not sure about tackle.

by comparison the gold standard at left tackle now...Penei Sewell of the Lions...

only committed 3 penalties last season

How many yards in penalties was he responsible for? Those are just as bad as sacks.
He also couldn't care less about run blocking. This is addition by subtraction.
Don't forget how many false starts he got away with last year. He was always moving before the snap.

I think if they're confident Fisher is a starter at LT then this is a great move

A few thoughts so far:

1) So refreshing to have a GM that knows what he is doing. Nick knows you build a team with 2-4 round talent. We're accumulating those and, generally, he's done okay drafting those.

2) It's nice that when we have an aging "star", we get a return on them leaving. We got nothing for JJ, Andrew, or DHop leaving.

3) Tunsil leaving, I believe, opens the door for and places the full expectation on CJ to be the true leader. Not that he didn't try, but I do think it is hard to be the undoubted leader of the offense when you've got the leader of the OL doing his own thing. Hopefully the culture resets and CJ can command everybody without question of whether anyone gets "supervet" status.

4) Texans are spending smart and it doesn't seem like there'll be cash issues w/ Sting, CJ and Will.

Also, with next year being his last year on the current contract, I could see Tunsil being the type to apply leverage by sitting out until we gave him an extension. This is a "rip the band-aid off" move.

So this is how it nets out

2025:
25 (1st)
58 (2nd)
79 (3rd)
89 (3rd)
167 (5th)
231 (7th) [from Washington]
243 (7th)

2026:
1st
2nd
2nd [from Washington]
3rd
4th
4th [from Washington]
5th
6th [from Minnesota]
7th [from San Francisco]

Now interestingly, I heard rumblings that we were looking to move out of the 1st for a 2nd and a 4th style combo. Honestly this is the draft to stock pile 2nd and 3rd round picks.

Yep. DeMeco has been clear that the OL and DL are the heart beat of the team. He has it going on the defensive side. This is the step in the right direction for the offense.

With how many of the talking head are unhappy with this trade I think I'm going to follow the Commanders next year and see if the sack totals for their LGs go up next year.

Looking on this past year, our LGs got abused by stunts no matter who we put in there. Which does make you think about scheme and talent, but the one constant the entire year on the line was Tunsil at LT. And him being a guy that doesn't seem to really focus on the details of the game I have been wondering if he had something to do with the communication issues (not saying it was on him, but something to think about).

I saw nothing from Fisher that tells me he can handle LT. I see about 10 extra sacks and 30+ extra pressures coming from that spot next season.

The entire o-line sucked last year no matter where they put anybody, after a year where they were great with "insert faceless name guy here" getting a chance to start. So who knows what they will do next year, but I still expect them to be better than last year.

I don't think they wanted another 20+ mil OL on the payroll.

With how much DeMeco shines praise on his players and points out leadership, I cannot remember a single time he mentioned LT specifically. I remember the OL group as a whole for run game performances, but never just Tunsil. There had to be issues behind the scenes, but good on Nick for getting something before Tunsil became a problem. Win win.

Commanders are interesting, they seem like they have ultimate boom or bust potential brewing. I'd bet on bust.

A very very dark horse (not in a racial sense), wouldn't surprise me if the Texans are gauging the 49ers interest in trading Trent Williams. That would play well with drafting a young OT and developing for a couple of seasons.

I heard that DeMeco was beyond furious with the offsides penalties during the season. I'm sure he was done with Tunsil 3/4 through the season and made sure Nick knew.

Houston at 25 is a good spot for a team in need of a QB to trade back into the first to take them when they didn't have a chance at the top of the round. I could see the Raiders (even though they traded for Geno) or the Jets pulling that move or even the Giants possibly if Ward and Sanders go 1-2 to the Titans and Browns. Having the 5th year option is especially valuable for QB's so if someone is interested in Jaxson Dart, but not enough to use a top 10 pick, that would be an opportunity to grab some day 2 and 3 picks.

Blake Fisher is not an answer at LT, so they better be looking at other options.

I like the boldness, and expect the Caley scheme to improve the overall performance of the OL.

However, for all of Caserios wins, his track record with OL is really bad. If he doesnt reverse that trend this offseason then he needs to be replaced.

let's trade away the guy responsible for 2 of the 52 sacks our line gave up.

That will help CJ next year.

I think you have to look at the OL as a unit. These "individual OL grades" are really hard to do. Saying one guy was responsible for a sack or he wasn't is really tough.

Guessing this is the first of several moves. As frustrating as Tunsil was, he was our best OL by a pretty wide margin. I get why they moved him but we're no doubt a worse offense at the moment. But, again, I suspect there are more dominos to fall. Curious to see what the OL ends up being.

As disappointing as the Oilers always were, they were consistently a contender because of an amazing OL. Hopefully going to turn some of these redundant 3s and 4s into some extra 2s to stock up the line.

I like the no BS attitude and approach this team is taking on. There's a clear sense of urgency and put up or ship out message being sent.

May not be the best move from an Xs and Os standpoint but love that they're making tough moves swiftly when the the fit doesn't work.

Dionte Johnson...Lockeroom problem and gone
Skowik...Only 2nd year but not working out and gone
Tunsil...Good player but not working out from a culture standpoint and gone

These are moves that are not the easiest but they're necessary. Incredibly refreshing given the history of this franchise and their reluctancy to move on from people they don't necessarily want to.

These are also moves that you don't make without a very precise plan. You don't just trade your best OLman from the team who gave up the lost sacks in the league unless you have a very clear roadmap.

Maybe not the best move from an on field results POV but one that needed to happen. I can respect that.

Good post. Doesn't seem like Demeco is going to want any 9-7 parades. Or 10-7 at this point
