this will be a good discussion topic for the spring and summer

Stroud is definitely not a top 5 QB

is he a top 10 QB in the league?

not sure with the emergence of Jayden Daniels plus Justin Herbert's strong second half

Stroud is in the group with Jordan Love, Bo Nix, Trevor Lawrence, et al

Just one year ago, Stroud was the Jayden Daniels in this case. And oh by the way he is younger than Daniels, so those giving up on him and such are seriously crazy. Everything stacked against him this season and he was very average. He's going to be judged down the road on the It factor in the playoffs. I think he has it, but we will see.

I am not sure what your comment has to do with his Tweet? It is factual he was fined for a tweet from a Bengals player, not Mixon.
He hates Mixon and thinks CJ is trash. HTH
Almost correct.

MIxon is a piece of trash, who doesn't belong in the league imo.

And CJ isn't good, not trash, but not good, definitely not a top 5 qb like he was telling everyone last offseason.

I would say there's a pretty big delta between top 5 and not good. CJ regressed this year and you're correct he's not currently a top 5 QB. But his OL and coaching did him no favors (how many times did we leave Schultz to block a DE knowing damn well he can't or won't do it?). However, I think he's still above average and well over half the league would be more than happy to trade QB places with us. Time will tell if he takes the leap.
Stroud went on tour last offseason telling everyone that he was a top 5 qb. Guess he let that rookie of the year award get to his head.

He even went as far as to say he was better than Josh Allen. It is one thing to be confident, but that is just silly to think he is better than Josh Allen. If his people are telling him that, they need to stop.

If you're going to judge every pro athlete by their worst offense, probably be enough players for about 10 teams.

Do you have sources of him saying that or does anyone else remember that? Im not saying you're wrong, I just don't remember if, and this board is pretty thorough about such things.

Stroud made a post in Instagram in June where he gave his top 5 qbs for the 2023 season. He ranked himself 3rd. That's all he did.

Man, it is one thing to be critical of a team, organization, and individual players, but is a whole other thing to post in a thread incessantly about how bad everything is with every aspect of this team. I don't believe anyone believes this team is perfect, far from it, but there is a lot of positive about this team and its trajectory, I will ask again, why do you even post in here? Why do you even follow this team?

Pretty easy search. He went on the podcast circuit and repeated it over and over.

CJ had a rough sophomore season. No doubt.

But look what he had to work with.

He lost his best receiver for a decent chunk of the season. He lost his second best receiver midway through the season. He lost his third best receiver in the last 1/4 of the season. His only true RB was injured more than 1/4 of the season. He has a sub par TE.

Add in an OL that struggled with injuries and poor play.

Then factor in that the schedule went from a 4th place schedule to a first place one so the degree of difficulty went up.

Given all that, maybe it wasn't that bad a season after all.

Stroud's season is tough to evaluate due to the AFC South factor

against the Titans, Colts, and Jaguars...he was generally very good with 9 TD passes and only 2 interceptions

but in the eleven other regular season games...11 TD passes vs. 10 interceptions

of course that's the story of the DeMeco era

the Texans look great inside the division...9-3 the past 2 years

FIFY

The win a crappy division, then win the WC round against more crappy competition, then get bounced in the divisional round when they actually have to play a decent opponent.

Maybe it's just me, but I think I'd want my starting qb to think he's top 5 in the league and better than Allen. I would not like a qb who says "you know what, I'm average to not good".

Confidence is good, but was he so confident that he rested on his laurels thinking he is a top tier qb? He needs to spend a LOT of time this offseason learning how to read a blitz. He is talented, but the pocket presence and awareness is not there at all.

And as mentioned above, he just can't beat good teams and seems to lose to an epically bad team every season.

Stroud's to do list this offseason:

  • Pick up on pressure packages and how to handle them
  • learn to slide

That last one might actually be top if he starts running more (which he needs to do). It completely changed the games in the playoffs when he started tucking the ball and taking off, there was so much space.

One of the youngest QB's in the league.
Likely played hurt half of the season after getting absolutely wrecked in that Jets game.
CJ Hurts shoulder
Lost most of his good receivers and running back for chunks of the season.
Had no pocket to speak of for most of the season due to G-C-G inability to read/pick up basic stunts.
Pressured on nearly 50% of his throws.
Sacked 52 times in the regular season.
OC did him no favors in pass pro or scheming to adjust vs these issues.

Yes he regressed but let's not pretend like he's a bad qb. Let's see if he and Slowik can grow together (both second year) and solve some of these non-personnel problems.

While CJ did have a sophomore slump I think we need to see what he can do when his isn't running for his life. There were some games this season that he was getting David Carr'ed out there.

no doubt.

Lack of WR depth and being the most pressured QB in the NFL isn't a great recipe for success.

yes, it's happened to the franchise 6 times now

good inside the division + bad outside the division = 4 seed every year

I did some research.
I only found one podcast where he said what he said. That was on June 1, 2024, when he was on the "Mlllion Dollaz WOrth of Game" podcast

After hearing the criticism Stroud recanted his statement TWO DAYS later, saying on Instagram =- according to CBS Sports's Bryan DeArdo,

""In his updated list (which he posted on his Instagram account), Stroud kept the top-three quarterbacks the same, but gave the No. 4 spot to Josh Allen and moved Prescott to the fifth and final spot while omitting Hurts," DeArdo noted. "Stroud added that he feels Joe Burrow is also among the NFL's top 5 quarterbacks. Burrow, though, missed nearly half of the 2023 season with an injury, which was surely the reason why he was left off of Stroud's list."

So, unless I'm missing something, he didn't repeat it over and over, he said it once on a podcast, got criticized for it, and clarified his opinion 2 days later. Every other mention of it online just references the same podcast.

Doesn't seem like that big of a deal.
