Some of the posts on the Texas food thread got me thinking. Just what is a true Texan? If you're not of Caddo, Lipan Apache, Comanche, Kiowa, Kickapoo or Karankawa lineage do you qualify?

My paternal line got here in the 1850's by way of VA in the late 1600's to SC in the 1700's to AL in early 1800's to here. I'm 5 the generation. Mt grandkids are 7th. But are we true Texans?

My Kafe Klatch buddy's family got here in this area of the hill country from Germany in late 1840's and his grandson is 8th generation.....living on the same piece of property that's been in the family for 175 plus years. Are they Texan?

It's about embracing the Texas spirit, not genetic heritage.

I was born in Tyler County Hospital in Woodville Texas in 1970. I'm as true of a Texan as anyone….

Don't think people of native descent would identify themselves as "Texan" since that concept was created by the people who came here and pushed them out.

My oldest link to Texas was buried in Shelby county in 1833.

My question would be, is a Texan defined by family heritage, or the culture and the values they hold dear?

Given the latter is the thing that, in my opinion, is slipping away the fastest, I would say you'll know em when you see em

I wonder of all those Indian tribes OP rattled off would describe themselves as Texans? Probably not.

We have owned the same farm for 102 years.

I am convinced that it isn't the latitude and longitude that make the difference, it is the culture of the people.

This should serve as a warning as our population changes.

I'm willing to go to fists for Texas if someone besmirches her good name in my presence. I can't track my family lineage to save my life. However in a dank hospital room in dirty ole Odessa in the mid 80's, probably with flickering lights and cigarette smoke stained walls, I came to be. I ain't classy or high bred in any sense of the word but damnit I am Texan through and through and won't let any man tell me otherwise!

If you have generational graves of your ancestors in the state they helped support, and you now live in, I'm pretty damn sure that counts.

Both sides of my family came to Texas when it was Mexico. If you're more Texan than me, you're Mexican.

Doesn't take much to stir some of you up. Which board should it have been posted in? What's so controversial about the post that's got your knickers in a knot? Seriously

I wasn't born in Texan and haven't lived there for over a decade, but when asked I always describe myself as "more Texan than anything else". As Lyle Lovett, who I think fits all reasonable definitions of a True Texan, tells us, "That's right you're not from Texas, but Texas wants you anyway."

I dispute this.

Comanches did not come to Texas until after they became a horse culture in the late 18th century. They then proceeded to drive many of the Lipan Apache out. There were already Europeans here by then, so I would toss Comanches as "true texans" if you are talking about (geographically) who came here first. I feel like I am a true Texan and my family did not arrive here until the late 19th century, so there is that...

9th generation. Family helped survey Texas for the US. Movie series was made of off of our story of Comanche abduction. Multiple counties named after my peeps. I eat beef 5 times a week. I call anyone north of I10 a Yankee. Have thousands of acres. Named kids after Texas figures/towns.
Always the most goodest
