Mascara is certainly less pronounced, but there. No vertical lines is a good clue too.

The way he's got his nose pointing up is very CM like as well.

Been a slow year for snakes, most of the ones I have seen around the house are small. Not sure what kind of snake left this but it's in the area of the garter snake I posted about a month ago

Found this guy while mowing yesterday. Let the boys play with him for a minute before he was transported back to the woods via dump truck. Still no snakes on our property this year other than the YBWS on our porch a few weeks ago.


Ok I give up on trying to post pics from Imgur on mobile. I'd finally gotten the post all formatted correctly after switching to desktop, but then the "post" button is dead.

Yes, I know. I post from my PC fairly often and use Imgur as a host. I can't find the correct way to link on mobile. I finally got to a .jpeg link after opening the image in Safari rather than the Imgur app or Chrome. If I go to the desktop version of texags, I can get the image to show correctly in the post, but then the"post" button does absolutely nothing. I'm on a new iPhone with latest iOS and chrome browser. I'll take it to the tech support board rather than continue this derail.

I've said before, he doesn't care if it flys,falls, hops or crawls into this yard uninvited, he's going after it....

Look, I discovered TexAgs 4-1/2 yrs ago just after our son got Aggieland.
And back then the Mrs believed all snakes were bad...

But because of y'all, tonight when she saw what our pup had done she said "he didn't get a good one, did he?'"

Had to rescue both a yellow belly racer and a plain belly water snake from the collie pack in our backyard. We have a couple that love to find and corner critters and they have a particular bark when they do, especially for snakes.

The racer took some damage but I think it'll be fine.

The water snake was a 3 footer and it put up a fight. Bloody bites on a couple of dog lips and snouts a tired bear up snake but I broke it up before anyone took serious damage.

I also relocated one copperhead and one rat snake this past week. Unfortunately no pictures as I was busy each time and without my phone on me.

This guy was hiding under a plastic play set thing that I moved while mowing. Earth snake? Do these guys leave little half inch to an inch wide holes in the ground?

Yes rough earth snake... no to the holes part. They only burrow through loose topsoil and they generally dont leave holes. Any hole they did leave would be less than 1/2 inch wide.

The other night, there was a bunch of loud cackling from some blue jays behind our house around midnight. Not normal, so I checked it out & found a similar looking rat snake having its way with their nest.

Whiptail lizards like the one I posted earlier in this thread make holes like that. If you have them in your yard, they are likely the culprits.

Wife called to say we have a visitor at the back door. I just got my eyes dilated and can't see squat on my phone. What am I driving home to? Hays Co. neighbors have seen all kinds of snakes, but I've only seen garter, snakes and rat snakes, and assume this is the ladder but it's just a big black squiggle.to me right now.

It looks pretty huge for a checkered garter but it is definitely a checkered garter.

Update:

Terrier mutt, very much a hunter and terrorizer of squirrels, lizards and the like, saw the snek through the door before I got home. She went ape, startled the snake who summarily spit out the toad and bolted "somewhere."

So rather than more pics or video of what I gather is about 36" garter, I've got a mortally injured toad that I relocated to the green belt to "heal up" and a snake on the loose. Wife simultaneously wants me to clean up her gardening debris off the back porch and burn down the house.

Reassure her there almost isn't a more harmless snake out there... garters rarely strike unless you corner them entirely. They are big chickens themselves. They usually dont bite even when you pick them up. But I dont recommend picking up any snakes unless you are both confident in handling of snakes and absolutely certain of identification.

I looked up record size checkered garter after your first post and it said around 42 inches
