First of the year, Collin county. Aggressive little one, was good to show the kids how it changed the shape of its body and neck when it felt threatened. Garter snake.

Edit, he came back to me and handled him while he was all chill.

Those are also fun to show to kiddos that snake bites don't hurt.

I love Hyla cinerea, otherwise known as the green tree frog.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

This critter was already out and about north of Riesel.

Going to the international reptile expo in Daytona Beach, Florida in August. Hopefully going to get 2-3 snakes that I've always wanted to get / or had before (tricolor South American hognose - Lystrophis family, Mexican Hognose, Grey-Banded Kingsnake.

I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Nice. Those Lystrophis/Xenodon are such incredible snakes.

Can you guys ID from this picture? And do you think one snake or two? Looked for the mascara mark and couldn't see anything. Picture was taken by my wife after I stepped right over them.

The white "chalk lines" running perpendicular to the body is the key here.

This picture was taken a minutes before the picture I posted above. We didn't know he was a part of the picture. When you zoom in I think I can see the vertical jaw lines that indicate the water snake too

Found this tiny one under a dog crate in the garage after the cats alerted me.

Not sure if that split in his tail is from the cats or if I injured moving the dog crate to see what was under there.

Poor little fella was scared. I put him in the backyard to hopefully grow up and eat rats and mice.

Small rat snake?

I am going to guess Western Ribbon Snake and then wait for one of the experts to tell me I am wrong.

That's a question for 12f Mane, BadAce or one of the other more knowledgeable posters.

I'm 95% sure you're correct.

Yep, that's a western ribbon snake.

As for the ratsnake injury, snakes are definitely tough and I'd imagine it'll be fine but that was a pretty nasty wound.

Do they all have that blueish tone on their necks like that, or is that an identifier? Like its young, or male? Or did buddy rob a bank and got the ink on him?

No, they don't all have that. Pretty variable snake. I see more bluish ones in east and southeast Texas than elsewhere. Here's some examples fro mall over:

Runnels County:

Liberty County:

Dallas County:

Kleberg County:

Travis County:

It should. We used to get tons of snakes at the zoo that we'd rehab with similar conditions - the majority did fine. They are tough creatures.

The one we saw in Bastrop County in 2023 looked just like that Travis County one. The red line down the back was very vibrant.

Isn't the little white scale in front of the eye a tell for the ribbon vs. a garter? I've always struggled with these.
