Hydrated plants withstand the cold better than dry ones.
Damp soil provides better insulation.
If you've got cold sensitive Agaves or tropicals in the ground cover them up. Move your pots on the patio, water a little & throw a sheet over them.
During the last big ice storm my Live Oak was drooping by several feet & nearly touching the ground. I had a ton of cedar wood, so I rolled the fire pit under it & burned through a cord of cedar. Melted the ice out of the tree gradually enough so the branches were not under strain & I didn't lose a limb. My neighbors thought I was crazy.
