I used to visit my Uncle Charlie in DeLeon as a kid. Their street was dirt. Do these folks expect Stephenville level services?

He has to be a move in…Native DeLeoners don't talk like that…Good folks!

Yeah, all that stuff costs LOTS of money and you don't do it for outlier events.

This is Texas. A bunch of people have been waiting years for the opportunity to actually use their winch or tow strap to get someone unstuck with their 4x4. There was probably a line forming.

I was the dumbass yesterday that tried it anyway.

It was an awesome three day weekend and hunt down in South Texas. Had a blast. I get ALL the way back to town and couldn't get my trailer over the big hill to get home. I had to, very carefully, back myself down the hill with people still driving by me. Fun. I cut across to Main Street and couldn't get that hill either. This time a very nice local police officer stopped traffic for me so I could back down that hill and get back to flat ground and I was able to pull into the hardware store.

The policeman pulled in and checked to make sure I had a good plan. After thanking him for the help I said I'm going to unhitch and leave it right here. He agreed. I'm sure in the back of his mind he was thinking something like 'you dumbass'. Yep. That's me today. I'm the dumb dumb.

So far in North Texas, there have been at least 25 barns and indoor arenas collapse due to the ice load.
Quote:

1/25/26 multiple barns and structures collapsed in North Texas and southern Oklahoma due to heavy ice accumulation. Horses were safely rescued. Ice loads exceeded structural capacity, causing widespread, significant damage, including to boat docks
A partial lust:
Vanlandingham arena & back barn
Luis Blanco / Empire Ranch arena
Lorenzo Lotti arena
Clemerson Barbalho arena, barn, round pen & walker
Khris Crowe barn & walker
Lauren & Arno Ferret walker & round pen barn
Laura Anthony arena
Trent Harvey barn
Brenda Armstrong arena
Butch Campbell arena
NCTC arena
Shelbi Reynolds arena & barn
Fernando Martinez/ Sliver Leaf arena
Yonathan Baruch round pen & walker
Rochelle Ludge Rondy barn & arena
Jessica Jones arena
Rhea Pole part of barn/shop
Thomas Hammer barn
Nikki Sowell barn
Horseman's Ranch arena
KB Ranch hay barn
Jennifer Ann arena
Tammy Brown barn & walker
Nomad Farms arena
Three Oaks Equine Clinic barn
Mansur Oaks (old Kyle Ranch) walker & tie-pole area
EE Ranches - Dry Mare Barn
Mandi Knowls -barn
The list is still growing.
A 100' x 250' indoor arena is 25,000 square feet. Just 2 inches of solid ice can add 1012 pounds per square foot. That equals 250,000300,000+ pounds of weight on a roof. Many areas right now have 5 inches or more of ice , or 62.5 tons.

Oh. Facebook math. Ok.

There is "math" and then there is math.

For instance, I always kill bigger/heavier animals when I'm by myself with no one to help me load them. You'd think I'd learn.

I need to really beef up my barns.

But seriously, for 100x250 barn of relatively low slope, that's about 30,000 square feet of roofing, and a cubic foot of ice is about 60 lbs....ish. So that works out to 300,000 lbs....i think. That's significant. Add in a 15mph+ wind on the side of structure like a sail.....it will wiggle and jiggle until it doesn't.

dam, this is not good, I bet thousands of metal buildings / barns may have come down. Didnt ever think of that

2" of ice weighs 10 lbs per square foot, so whoever said 30,000 sqr foot is right, about 300,000 lbs or ice on that roof

5" of ice would be 25 lbs per sqr foot or 750,000 lbs on a 30K sqr foot roof, not good

Was going to say, Llano county seems to be a little light on that equipment. I did see a dump with snowplow this morning but assumed he was coming to pull trooper truck out of the ditch because the blade was not down getting rid of the ice that put the trooper on the ditch along with 6-8 other vehicles.

Was supposed to have a mtg in St Louis with the City Permit department on Tuesday.

They canceled b/c they've not plowed the city streets and no one can get to work.....snow stopped yesterday afternoon FTR. And no one from the city takes their laptop home so online is not an option!

Amazing how poorly the local cities are run. I live in KS and my subdivision street, which saw the plow all of one time over the 36-hours of snow fall (~4"), is in better shape than the main throughfare in KC MO where my office is located. Just love that 1% earnings tax going no where.

Got a foot+ here in Central Arkansas. Kids had a great few days sledding on the hills in our neighborhood. Got a little melt from the sun today but temps not above freezing and going to plummet again overnight. I'm pretty over it. We live in a hilly neighborhood with almost no movement so the roads are still thick with snow and ice.

After reading through this thread, I have to give TxDot and the counties I traveled through props today. We left Coleman around 1:30 this afternoon to get back to Leander. Between TxDot plows and maintainers owned by the county, they had 84 and 183 cleared of all the ice. I thought it was going to be a tough drive but it wasn't bad at all.

The worst stretch was 183 as we came south out of Lampasas. The road hadn't been touched and only had a couple ruts that cars had managed to clear out. Once we got south of Briggs and into Williamson county, the plows had been through there and it was cleared up all the way to Leander.

I had to drive 45 miles to work this morning, I show up, and there are only 2 of us here. I came in at 5am and the roads were fine. I think people are overreacting a bit now. Frankly I probably should have worked from home but I had a site meeting today, and can't bet on a now show by the developer. Ugh.
