Props to OP. I have kids who HATE BEP asking for these.

I am also told by the kids that if I don't make these they will be very sad. They also would never eat most of the ingredients on their own during the rest of the year.

Gonna try this later, but adding a bag of pinto beans and using left over prime rib instead of ham.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

Making a pot as I type this, and it's almost done. Just need to get some cornbread going.

When I lived in Chapel Hill, I went to pig pickings. Once they had about 20 lbs of leftover meat. I used pulled pork to make my own Brunswick stew variation. If you don't have ham, a slow-cooked shredded pork butt would also be a good cheap meat to use.

I had to Google so much of this post. Now I understand this is non-Texan nonsense.

Yeah, I like to eat the local fare when I travel and live other places. I also can properly conjugate the verbs "to see" and "to run," so I wouldn't be welcome in parts of the Republic.

Been on my list forever just never got it done. Finally made them this year and they were incredible. Lots of comments from folks that don't like black eyed pears that liked these. Great recipe.

Excellent story, bro time:

Last year I used the presoaked peas and following the directions to the letter, the peas were mushy. This time I didn't put them in until 30 minutes and they are much firmer and just about ready.

Figured it might save others frustration since mushy peas are ass.

Subbed about 1.5lbs of left over pulled pork instead of the ham this year. Crisped the bacon up in a pan to remove some of the grease since i knew the pulled pork was going to add plenty of fat. Added extra Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and oregano. Also added some apple cider vinegar at the end to brighten it up. Served with corn bread. Another successful year.

Gave it a go and it was a great success!

Tomorrow I'm going to make white rice and put the peas over it just like red beans and rice. I may sprinkle some cheese on it if I feel crazy. It's going to be delicious

I made my first batch of Spadilly's recipe yesterday. Wife said they were good but my taste buds are kinda hosed right now so I'll have to take her word for it.

I subbed the meat from a smoked turkey leg for the ham because that's how we roll.

Totally works served like red beans and rice. This is amazing.
