This thread is hilarious.

I never thought that a thread comparing Stratford and Memorial would turn into innuendos about secret swinging societies. I know a lot of people whose parents and kids went to both schools. Great kids and great parents. I never in my life ran into a "swinger" society. But I am also not fat and ugly in which that swinger business preys upon….

Great area, beautiful neighborhoods, and great place to raise a family. I still would personally rather my child have a more "real world" experience at Stratford, but Memorial is the better academic school for obvious reasons.

Luckily we are zoned to Cy-Ranch, which is in another tier, but both Memorial and Stratford are solid.

Edit: don't want a ban

And 87 State Finalists. Home of Craig James, one of the goats. Pretty sure the baseball team went pretty deep into the playoffs in 94 or 95. And we definitely had a salty basketball team in the late 90's.

Academically, there's a discussion to be had. Athletics? Memorial simply doesn't stack up.

Cy Ranch has incredible test scores yet only four national merit semifinalists. How is that even possible?

If you line up test scores against national merit scholars you get a pretty direct correlation.

With the scores Cy Ranch as a school you'd expect to have the same national merit semifinalists as Clements, Dulles or Seven Lakes. They all have around 30. How does Cy Ranch have 4?

National Merit Semifinalists 2022-23 by school (threw in some others for comparison purposes):

- St Johns: 32
- Memorial: 23
- Bellaire: 21
- Strake: 17
- Kinkaid: 15
- St Agnes: 9
- Episcopal: 6
- Awty: 4
- Lamar: 2
- Stratford: 2

Honestly surprised that Stratford is that low. Lots of great Katy, Sugar Land, etc schools with good numbers.

None from Carnegie Vanguard or HSPVA? I find that surprising.

Edit: Think you're just quoting West Houston schools

You are correct, I am a stupid. I have a lot of friends in the neighborhood with kids who have or are going there and it seems way intense, so I was surprised but realize it's a non exhaustive list after posting.

You need to learn to take jokes man. Life is too short to be wound so tight like a woman who can't find her keys.

Neighborhood beef and smack talk is part of this board. A Stratford vs Memorial thread on the tine board was just asking for immature shenanigans. I just wish Strake Jesuit had been part of the OP.

Spring Branch Norteños 4 Life foo we've always had a tostada on our shoulder. Me walking up to Sam's Deli Diner back in the daze when it was where iFratelli Pizza is. "Gimme a number 4 Henry lolz!" (RIP)

We used to steal chromies and rob lemonade stands in the 079, but now we just troll onlinez.

(To be read in high pitched semi confident cholo voice)

The Igloo workers and their kids from across the tracks knew better. Cross the tracks and venture into 77079 in the 70s and 80s and mess with anything in the 77079 would be an ass whooping. There was something in our water. We did allow y'all to come play Astroids every now and then at the Stop and Go next to Charlottes Sadderly…as long as y'all were orderly and wore shoes.

And RIP Henry. Sam's Deli hasn't been the same

Growing up in Spring Branch in the 80's and 90's was awesome.

And yes, RIP Henry. Those burgers used to be amazing. We rode bikes there all the time in the summers and around Christmas break. He once said "you girls want anything to drink", to which 13-14 y/o me responded "yes ma'am, I want a Dr. Pepper". He told me, and my one friend that laughed, that we were banned from his place for a month, but that we could eat outside during that time as long as our other buddies ordered for us. I'll never forget standing outside eating our burgers and fries in cold wet nasty weather one time while Henry and our other buddies laughed at us from inside. Younger Henry was a good friend to us and always busted his ass and embodied the American Dream.

Also, the modern 079 NIMBY soccer moms weep and gnash teeth over Twin Peaks going in, having no clue just how seedy their neighborhood used to be. Sunny's convenience store (the OG one where Denny's is) used to straight up sell XXX adult videos to 14-15 y/o kids. Had to do what they could to compete with the 24 Hr News Stand closer to Rummel Creek I guess. It was always a different movie than what was depicted on the box, but not too picky at that age.

We didn't have such filth peddling establishments on our side of the tracks. Just Levitz Furniture and good honest salt of the earth industrial, mom and pop and restaurant type businesses.

Sunny's stores were amazing for teenagers, no matter what neighborhood you were in.

I still remember having this great epiphany one night like Sophomore year of high school when a buddy and I were bored. A lightbulb went off and I said, you know if that guy at Sunny's has been selling you porn since middle school, he'll probably sell us beer….

I feel like I must have spent hours waiting in the car with my cousins waiting for my aunt to run in to Sunnys to get her cigarettes. She was a teacher at one of the SBISD elementary schools but didnt want her students to see her buying cigarettes so she would wait for any parents or students she recognized to leave before running in to grab them. Definitely way more complicated than when we would ride our bikes to the Sherwood Forest Stop n Go and grab the smokes for her.

Hellya, used to be Circle K before that...can still hear the Indian clerk's voice any time a kid wandered back towards the magazine rack..."Donnn look at da playboys!"

Oak's Totem was another gem...the convenience store at the front of the Sherwood Oaks neighborhood, complete opposite end from Sam's Deli. They sold 40's, wine coolers and mad dogs to us when we were like 15-16.

On that note, there was a liquor store in the mid to late 90's called "Checker's" off the I-10 feeder just west of Voss that would sell 15-16 year olds whatever they wanted. Could just walk in, buy a few handles of alcohol for a party and they wouldn't card or question you.

During Hurricane Alicia we were without power. Rumor had it that Sam's Deli had ice. My Mom sent me to Sam's to get ice. I was a regular there. There was some biker gang outside drinking beer. Sam's Deli gave me 2 bags of ice for free and I ran home ACROSS I-10 to keep the ice from melting. I was a 5th grader.

Home of Patrick Swayze and The Undertaker, but I'm in. I miss living in Oak Forest sometimes.

I could talk about 80's and 90's life in the Tine (esp Spring Branch) for hours.

That's something else kids today miss out on, iron-on tshirts designed or made by our own moms expressing their creativity instead of ordering them from other moms on the internet. That, and being able to buy porn and beer and cigarettes regardless of their age.

When I moved to Kingwood, it had a hard-won reputation for wife-swapping and gangster cheerleaders. Kinda sad thinking about how time has passed us by. Now all I can do is sit on the porch and watch Stratford and Memorial throw-down on who is more white collar hard.
