What? Not a ****ty location at all. Right between Shepherd Park Plaza and Garden Oaks.

Tons of traffic up and down Shepherd there, near North Shepherd Brewery, Brash Brewery, Clutch Automotive, LA Fitness, etc.
Has more to do with being behind Tapatio. Also, it's a bit north of GO and SPP. I may very well be misjudging how busy that place is. We'll know in a few years for sure.

I'm in SPP and can ride my bike there if I wanted to. It's actually east of SPP, not north.

Long enough ride to gear up in your pantys or street clothes distance?

Trust me, I'm not one of those weirdos. Just meant the new Hughies is really close to the house.

They don't brew there anymore. All brash beer is made at equal parts. Landlord is kicking them out of their current spot, are looking to open a tap room somewhere.

A bunch of breweries in town have gone out of business in the past couple years, so there should be plenty of options.

If they aren't going to brew on site, none of that matters.

They just would want a restaurant / bar essentially for a tap room.

Bring back old Petrol with Brash on tap - obviously with Ben out of the picture on both now it could be run well. or have Rancor's that dont take 45 minutes to make.

No crap. Petrol hurt more than most covid casualties.

The Monkey's Tail folks are supposed to open something and I'm surprised that it's still empty.

Maybe walking stick can get a little edgier and allow the Brash guys to sell good beer there and maybe put some skulls and sh\t on the choo choo train.

It's crazy how long it's been sitting there empty. They were supposed to open as Grease Monkey a couple years ago, but never did. They may have been on hold because the streets were all torn up for a while, but that's been done for a while too.

No chance, they know their market well (young families with small kids/strollers). I don't think they're looking to win a GABF Gold Medal

I drove by the Restaurant Depot parking lot this afternoon, and they are installing concrete parking stops all over the parking lot. I guess that will discourage drag racing and donuts late at night.

I always wondered why they didn't do that in the past. They did add the ones that are there closer to the store 1-2 years ago.

I was thinking they should put up fencing and gates, but leave the gates open until after the rally starts.

I can't cut through the parking lot from 20th now and avoid the fustercluck of the TCJ 4 way stop.

The street construction was untimely.

Then a divorce derailed the plans.

Now Pangui has made it as impossible to find parking on that corner just like Petrol did. Both would be a nightmare in a situation that is already a horrible kitchen situation (why food took so long). The only way that works is to demo and start from scratch an utilize the back lot. And that wouldn't be cheap.

Those 2 lots are probably more valuable for more townhomes at this point.

I was in there one night (mainly because it wasn't crowded so easier) waiting on someone to meet me to bar hop and ended up having a beer with the supposed owner. His comments were they new the beer sucked, but that wasn't the priority. Kid friendly, nice environment was what made them money. So unless something changed, good beer isn't a driver for them. It was more about being serviceable in an area drawing people because of the other places on the street.

Hell, my friend was running way late and the owner invited me to walk down the street to Great Heights so we could get a good beer instead of sitting there for another.

When was this?

We were at Great Heights within the last couple of years and they said to give Walking Stick another try. Said they changed some things. I will say it wasn't as bad as I remembered. Still wasn't great...and seemed like they didn't even have half their beers. But it is definitely a better setup.

Definitely been a while. Not anytime recent.

It was just a very odd conversation I wasn't expecting to have. Nice guy.

Hell he could have just been sitting on the place to sell as real estate appreciated for all I know and the new owners are making changes. Who knows.

Did the owner say what he did in a previous life?

I believe the original owners had done well and Walking Stick was more of a hobby/keep busy place than anything else.

Wild if he really thinks their beer isn't that great and goes to other breweries for better beer.

I know a few owners of breweries that know their beer isn't the greatest.

Did they sell? I know the original husband and wife owners did their time at Deloitte before purchasing property.

They've been through a handful of head brewers but always the same ****ty product

Wonder if any of them do any private labeling, like some of the Fredericksburg area "wineries" that are in the ambience business more than the wine business.

Walking Stick would be a lot better if they just sold regular beer, it's a cool place but we never go there because nothing they have is good.

I believe they still own it but don't keep up with them and haven't been in a couple of years. I know they're former Deloitters that did this more for fun than actual cranking out a profit it sounded like.

Sure; they want to make money but it's not like they need the income to live off of. That property was a fine investment.

Hilarious if the guy thinks his beer isn't the greatest but is like, "Whadda ya gonna do about it? We'll just go down the street."

Not much of a beer drinker here, but definitely have always gotten wine at walking stick. Haha.

Also, theres so many traffic lights on ella and TC Jester, I dont know why they dont just put in another traffic light at the 4 way stop and freaking sync them all up!

It's been a little while and I don't believe I asked him specifically about past work, but what you described is pretty much the gist of what I got out of it.

I mean, it's not the normal plan, but it's not dumb either.

Buy a property in a redeveloping area, put a generic restaurant in that breaks even or even loses a little. Give yourself a part time retirement job. Sell for a lot more down the road or even lease it out if your concept doesn't work.

Like I said. He seemed like a smart, down to earth guy. I think I just walked in after he had an argument with one of his brewers (a girl if I remember correctly) who wanted to do a bunch of over the top stuff and he was over it and looking to vent a little. It was fairly early during the week and the place was almost empty.

Hell, it could have just been some random guy making it all up. All I know is my beer was paid for and we parted ways once my friend showed up.

Funnily enough, I think that's kind of how Fitzgerald's started. She ended up selling it a few decades later.
