Oof ...

Starting October 24th, I-10 west is going to be reduced to two lanes in each direction between Taylor Street and Downtown. The connections from I-45 south to I-10 west and from I-10 to I-45 north will be closed. This is expected to last into the middle of next year.

This is going to make 610N a nightmare because everyone will think avoiding I-10 is the quickest route.

But stop at Nice Ash for a cigar if you do make it towards downtown!

Y'all are complaining but it's going to be amazing once all the road construction around town is complete.

We should have little to no traffic in Houston starting in 2027 and beyond, so the massive short term pain will be worth it.

Traffic is bad in Houston you don't say.

TxDOT is a jobs program. Construction will never be complete. Hell, the West Loop/59 interchange has been completely rebuilt three times in the last 20 years.

Really makes removing 2 lanes from 11th Street totally worth it.

Is this part of redoing I-45? Or are they going to do all of this again once that project kicks off?

No, this is separate from the I-45 project. The I-10 project is to raise I-10 out of the floodplain because it has flooded 10 times in the last 30 years.

Ok, so they're going to do the whole thing over again in a couple of years.

Ugh. It was already not awesome.

(And what is frustrating is that before the construction, this was part of the city that actually worked traffic wise)

There's more work coming on IH-10 from 610 to Studemont. Although those segments are on hold for at least 2 years.

TXDOT is clearly showing that these projects will wrap up by a certain date. With the negotiating leverage, resources and initiative of the government behind these projects they should probably finish ahead of schedule and under budget. It really is going to be a completely different driving experience around in Houston in 2028 and beyond...

This is such a stupid effing project. Years of added congestion to stop the highway from flooding once every decade. Plus the idiots managed to damage and shut down two pedestrian/ bike bridges.

Been here for the entirety of my 52+ years... didn't always feel this way, but this city sucks.

Luckily I almost never have to go into Houston inside the loop anymore. Increasingly becoming a democratic third world cess pool. Next time you are sitting in freeway traffic inside the loop...just look around you.

Yep. Amazing place in the 80's and 90's. Garbage city now. Never thought I'd be happy out in the burbs.

ITL is waaaay better than the 80s and 90s. Places like Southhampton had tons of crime from apartments in and around Richmond, West U was a nice but modest middle class enclave with nowhere near the wealth or status it has now, and no one on this board would've dreamed of living in Rice Military or the Heights.

In 1990 there were people that thought Houston was entering into an urban death spiral like Detroit or St Louis and ITL would become a no go zone.

That didn't happen. The no go zones developed in previously nice areas like southwest Houston / Sharpstown and everywhere between 610N and 1960. And now the hordes are pushing north of 1960.

But ITL is 100% better than the 80s and 90s.

I am sure this will go like North Beltway 8 construction of 2024 where no one worked for 75% of the schedule duration and then finished in 30 days.

Agree.

I remember driving from BCS to Fitzgeralds when I was in college in the early 90s and thinking what a sketchy area it was. Also went to law school in mid 90s downtown and there was almost nowhere to drink or eat there then.

Yeah, its amazing what has happened in the Heights. Hogg Middle school has gone from a bottom half statewide performer in 2015 to nearly top 10% middle school in just ten years.

But there are areas OTL that have gone the completely opposite way. I think when people talk about Houston going downhill they are thinking about some of the great suburbs we had in the 70s and 80s around town that began going downhill rapidly in the 90s and beyond as the poorest families started getting pushed out of ITL. And our Katrina friends made some of those areas much worse.

Ok so it has been unusable say 30 days in the last thirty years if we give it 3 days for every flood event. This is going to make it practically unusable for probably a year, given historic construction trends. Even if we said 5 days per flooding event l, that only gets us 50 days of non use in the last 30 years. If we are going off strictly lack of use, it's going to take something like 150+ years to break even on the down time alone.

I'm sure the flooding causes some undue wear, but IIRC it's never been bad enough to close it down on a long term scale to address flood related damage.

I know this is simplifying it, but still.
