when i lived in angelo, my favorites were:

zentner's daughter for chicken fried steaks. although, i've heard its not that great anymore......so i'll go the original zentner's now when i go home.

mejor que nada for mexican food........however its not as good as it used to be when it was just a gas station, two tables....and so forth.

peasant village for just a good quality meal

the city cafe in sterling city for the big ass pancake that you get for free if you can finish it. i got close............but i didn't want to explode on a southwest flight out of midland

and my all time favorite..........weinershnitzel on sherwood way. i'll dispose of about 10 chili cheese dogs every time i go home.

Funny you say that. We were in Angelo last week and my brother in law, who now lives in Midland came over with family to visit. They had to go get chili dogs from weinyworld. They craved them.

Me, I it Zentners for the CF and Charcoal House for steak logs, err, fingers. In fact had to bring a large order back with me to TN for another Angelo native that works with me so he could get his Charcoal House fix. Tony even sold me a gallon of her BBQ sauce. I am in heaven again!

Canyon,

The PrimeRib Sandwich is great! And of course you have to have some of their bread pudding with Jack Daniels sauce...

Mixed day for us Friday...the girls lost in a shootout to Sherman, but the wife and I ate at Perini's

Oh.
My.
God.

We shared a 22oz. bone-in ribeye and finished with the bread pudding.

The pudding was excellent, thanks for the recommendation. I considered the sandwich, but it seemed a shame to go to a steakhouse and not have....a steak.

I give it

Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

What side order did you try? They're all amazing.

Perini zucchini and the hominy. The zucc was very good, but it tasted strange to me to be eating steak and spaghetti sauce together. My wife doesn't like hominy, but with the cheese and bacon bits, she thought it was good.

The restaurant at the Best Western - Midland/Odessa Airport used to have a cook just known as "the Fat Kid".

His chicken fried steaks were so good that American Airlines pilots would dead-head out of DFW just to get a CFS fix, fly back on the last flight that night.

Absolutely the best CFS I ever had.

Unfortunately the Fat Kid vanished years ago and took his CFS with him. A real loss.

this is kind of a modified version of Perini's hominy recipe. We make it all the time for big family meals, Thanksgiving Christmas and such. A big casserole that travels and stores well.

1 white or yellow onion
2 small (4.5 oz) cans of chopped green chiles
2 30oz cans of Hominy - golden or white
2 lbs of mild cheddar cheese or we prefer colby jack
a few jalapeno slices, the more the hotter
about 1/4 cup jalapeno pickling juice (just some out of the jar)
crispy bacon crumbs

Chop onion and sauté till done. Chop Jalapeno slices, mix with green chiles, sautéed onion, hominy, cheese and jalapeno juice. Place mixture in casserole dish large enough so that its about 3 inches thick. Sprinkle extra cheese and crumbled bacon on top.

Bake at 425 for 30 minutes or until cheese starts to brown on top.

Serve Hot – even better reheated as leftovers

It takes a lot more cheese than you would think. It turns out to be about half cheese and half hominy. Use a good quality cheese that melts evenly. I substituted red beans one time for about half of the hominy. I liked it, but my wife didn't.

Too many in San Angelo to name, but I will have to throw in the airport cafe there. Great food but best at Chinese. I know many an airforce pilot that pattern their flights to make it for lunch or dinner.

Shane-

"Angeloans" have very eclectic TexMex tastes. Francos is very good, as is Armentas, Chilangos, Fuentes downtown.........

Usually folks like the restaurant that is close to where they live or work. Francos opened well after I moved out of North Angelo to Wall, so didn't get there much to eat.

Trivia question- What TexMex place got it's start in the same little building as Franco is now in now at the corner of 23rd and Randolph? (edit to add- we are talking like the mid 1970's)

The Drover House on Avenue A in Lubutt. Don't know if it's still there -- I'm talking 40 years ago, when I could still have chicken fried steak and french fries. They took both to a new level, no hockey. Best I ever had, and in those days I kept score.

Haven't had a chance to eat at the Cotton Gin in Wall or is it still open? Have seen any posts about it, so I doubt that it has edged out any of the Angelo favorites.

Been eating all over Texas and the US and Angelo still has more good (local/not just the chains) resturants than any other town. Abiline is right there also.

Last I heard, the Gin wasn't as good as it started out. Ate there a year or so ago. It wasn't as good as when it first opened.

I think it changed hands, or something. There are enough Ag's from Wall that someone ought to chime in with an update.

I used to shovel milo at the place when the coop had turned the gin into an granin elevator.

Atmosphere doesn't help much when the food doesn't bring you back.
