The damage is done. The only thing Sumlin has really brought is stellar recruiting, and with what has gone on, his ability to recruit is going to be seriously undercut. Time to blow it up and start over.
Yeah that John Chavis hire was just bush league wasn't it...

We are one hire away from having an amazing situation as far as coaching staff. Think on that...

This coaching hire is his last hope in my opinion. Sumlin has done something to hurt his recruiting and relationships in Texas. We are counting on out of state recruits to make it up. I hope the OC is a big hire like Chavis (and Spurrier may not be it).

If spav is still here after we beat taco-tech community college, or whoever it is we're playing, then I'm done with Sumlin.

Sherman was a lousy game day coach, but he built an absolutely loaded offense and an above average starting defense (which was enough due to injury luck).

Other than hiring Chavis, who fell into his lap, Sumlin has done nothing that would make one think he can keep this rolling. The defense was terrible until Chavis showed up. The offense fell to well below average despite great recruiting (and showed horrible technique while doing so) and Sumlin never did anything to stop the free fall. Instead, he hired a 28 year old to be OC and then watched. Then his personnel mismanagement chased off the best qb on the roster and might chase away the dual threat too just for the hell of it.

Recruiting is falling apart, Spavital is still around, and rumors are swirling. I don't think he's the guy to pull is back from this ledge that he singlehandedly built

I take it you're not a homeowner. The one time you tried to buy a house, you blew it all up when they told you it would take 30 days to close, right?

It's a process, geez.

I support him until we really know more. Right now it just looks like some 5'8" ***** and his ***** daddy didn't get their way and want to burn the place down. Don't get me wrong, still Sumlin's fault for recruiting so many *******, but it isn't something I'd fire him for. Yet.

Sumlin is an asshat and has run this this into the ground, has shown the inability to develop talented and highly recruited players, allowed his offense to mire in total ineptness, deteriorated each year since JFF, has completely lost the team, and mishandled, on a ginormous scale, a QB situation which has turned from an embarrassment of riches to a total joke resulting in two starters leaving the team rather than playing for him.

Support him? RU kidding me? I'd fire his ass today, right now, no questions or an afterthought. If you disagree, well, you just can't be helped.
Anyone suggesting Sumlin should be fired is required to give names of who his successor should be. (Saban and Meyer aren't coming)

If you can't come up with at least 3 names, STFU.

Just like the last recruiting season, **** him, **** the Allens, **** the Murrays, and all of this. More drama than the Browns' front office.

And if any more of the attention hoaring 2015 recruiting class transfers, **** them too.

I support him. Sometimes you can do everything right and it just goes sideways. you can't reduce football to a predictable mathematical equation. Frankly, that's why its fun.

Our knowledge of what's going on is only the tip of the iceberg, and we don't have the full knowledge of the facts to say what exactly has transpired or been said. I'm not ready to scrap the whole thing based on speculation.

Also, it's virtually impossible to make effective major changes during the season, so we were what we were by Game 2 or 3 and we just had to deal with it.

I'm content to wait and see what changes he makes. i will say that if we are competitive with the best teams in our division, then it's not a successful year, regardless of how many games we win. In the last 3 years, we haven't been competitive.

Sumlin has done so much for our program it's not even funny, I think yes we need to fix the offense but if we have these two kids causing drama and they want to "quit" because it's to hard, then they'll never when us a big game if they can't even commit to something. Jake isn't bad we have Tate on the way... also theres this really good QB down in Austin that plays at a school that brought out Drew Brees, Nick Foles and Ryan Swope. He currently commit to texas and plays a lot like another 3 start recruit that went on to win the Heisman, he'd probably play better than kyler because he actually plays like a teammate and not " I PUT THE TEAM ON MY BACK STYLE"

I would agree except we have watched our players get progressively worse at their individual & team execution. Our offensive players have become sloppier. Their individual technique has regressed across the offense. That is not speculation.

Do you know how many elite college coaches there are?

Maybe 5?

We aren't going to get one of those 5.

If we can Sumlin, we're going to sink even lower.

If Sumlin can straighten out the offense, we can compete for SEC and national titles.

The defense went from blowing all our games to decent in one year. Chief will have us really tearing it up on that side of the ball in a year or two.
There are a lot of "if"s there, with no reason to think they are going to happen. Our offense has been worse than the year before every year sumlin has been here.

Not much return on $450 million and $5 million/year. Year 5, one scholarship QB. Coach Lumpsumlin is a one trick pony and that pony is now starting in Cleveland.

I do.

I do think the timing and and the significance of Kyler's recruitment has created a perfect, and potentially horrific, storm.

Before KM signed, I wondered if Sumlin could survive the perception that he lost out on such a well known prospect who happened to also be a legacy

Then, I wondered how Sumlin could manage to keep both kids happy and build our offense esp when their strengths were so different

And somewhere along the way, I did come to the conclusion that Spav was a horrible play caller and should not have been made our OC.

But I think Sumlin can still do great things here but only if the fans aren't intent on tearing him down and running him out of town. Our lack of patience and rush to the next era is a real prob. Hard to recruit when the loudest fans of your school are always ripping all the coaches. (Insert any head coach from any of the last 20 years here; it has earned long-standing tradition status by now)

I agree. And I bet Sumlin would agree. The question is why? After all, it's not the OC's job to be everyone's position coach. Christensen was a pretty good OL coach/OC at Mizzou, but the OL was the biggest problem on the team, IMO. More so than the playcalling? Do you fire him after one season? I don't know.

He made the moves he thought need to be made last year. He couldn't evaluate the success of those moves really until October, we we started playing teams with a pulse.

What does he do now? I'm prepared to wait and see.

Does not matter what the reason is, when the paint starts to peel on the recruiting wagon it is hard to turn it around. Think about how the other coaches in the SEC would handle what is going on if they were HC here. It appears A&M is approaching the point where other coaches on visits can say A&M, shake their head, then just shut-up. End of conversation. I, for one don't know what he can do to catch the eye of 18 year olds who are good enough to play on Sunday.

Sumlin hired a 28 year old to be OC in the SEC West. He did nothing as the offense fell apart this year and when it was obvious that Spavital was in over his head. Recruiting is tanking. Players are leaving. The idea that he's a fantastic CEO is not based in reality.

You make a good point here...it could have went either way for Sumlin with Kyler. I do think we are all still so starstruck from JFF being our saving grace in 2012 and it being our first season in the SEC. The fact that Sumlin inherited a very talented OL, receiving corp, and some really good RBs to complement JF - it was just pure magic; however, KK made the difference with dynamic play calling that brought out this teams strengths and punished opposing defenses. Spavital couldn't call a game that would help a jr high team win.
