We have to temper any enthusiasm as they are here until the spring game and then there is another portal season. We know there will be more coming and going before next season.

Elko knows what we need and will likely find the right pieces

That's good. Many are of the lower-ranked variety, so probably less competition with the richest programs though.

I haven't seen their films, but I can only imagine Elko is signing people who will help us win. Not that we're whiffing on others who may cost a ton more.

Elko has been solid with the portal during his tenure. I'll keep trusting his judgement to fill holes and know where younger guys can step up.

It looks like we got a legit kicker. That alone has me excited. Other than that, it looks like we're filling in depth at positions of need. I'll have to trust our staff's scouting abilities.

Still holding out hope for a high end OT (preference is Peak), high end Edge rusher, run stuffing DT and a 1/2 level WR and yes Coleman would be nice for that, but there are other high end receivers out there still.

A RB that can succeed at short yardage without falling down before the line of scrimmage

I feel like we are filling depth and probably not spending a lot of the NIL budget doing it in hopes of making a big splash or two with NIL left (WR and Edge). Cushing will make his money this year getting a 5 man line with the under-achieving LSU guys and the youngsters we have already.

Some are hard to impress. KC and Howell were first team AAs. Reed Adams a second team AA. Those guys plus Craver, Bork, both starting corners and a safety are ALL portal guys. Not to mention Scoobie and several DLs. Seems like Elko has a decent track record.

Feeling good. Elko's shown he can work the portal.

Okay.

The safety is almost an instant starter and NFL player in a year or two. Either LSU OL can easily be in the NFL in 2 years. Both have sec starting capability and NFL level ability. The OT gave up one sack and has a really good pass block grade, but does need to improve in run blocking. Echols was the same. Good grades in pass pro, bad in run blocking. Shouldn't have been on the field as a RFR and next year should be the first year he was really in the rotation in a fair lineup.

Granted he was after your commented, but the DE we just got is also a likely NFL guy. Many think he will get drafted. The TEs are more wait and see, but I think both are better than Theo.

Elko has picked up 9-10 future NFL draft picks from his first two portal classes (2024: Howell, Scourton, Reed-Adams, Lee, Ricks, and 2025: Concepcion, Craver, Onyedim, and maybe Boerkircher or Humphrey) and I'd be willing to bet they are higher on this portal haul than either of those.

They have hit a much higher rate of the guys they want than they did in either of those two hauls.

Guarantee you it isn't our first high level guy in the staffs eyes. I'm telling you, portal rankings are worse than HS rankings. They just don't have the infrastructure. Follow who we are hard after / get to visit. That tells you the priority our staff sees.

They may prove to be wrong in their evals, but the rankings aren't even close to what they want.

The difference is, besides Reed Adams and the TE, I think the rest of those guys were 4* portal guys and thus far we only have 1. My point is we probably have not spent as much and can add a high end OT, run stuffing DT, high end WR and maybe another top notch End. We have done a good job on filling holes with capable guys to add to the 2 deep.

I do really like the Tulsa LB, Colorado Safety and now Saka.

Very good young man, as well. Would be a huge plus to the Aggie community in all aspects. Not just football! A leader for sure.

Since Elko got here, the portal has only had a few shiny trinkets that everyone wants each year and Elko hasn't gotten any of those (yet). Cam Coleman would be the first if he chooses the Ags.

That being the case, almost everyone on here has kind of poo-pooed each of Elko's portal classes as being mostly guys to provide depth and no real impact. I mean there were a bunch on here that looked at KC's numbers from his last year at NC State and went 'meh'. How'd that turn out?

The bottom line is Elko and staff have been very good at identifying guys that will fit and produce in their system. The majority of our defensive production this year was from the portal and none of those guys were thought of as super great portal additions by the Texags geniuses in the zoo.

I think the portal class is fine so far. If Elko does many to get one or two of the prize guys, it will be A+.

With damn near 100% certainty, I can say that we are actually spending MORE than we have any other portal class, FWIW.

I can all but guarantee you they could have more 4 stars if they went that route, but chose otherwise. Will they prove right in their evaluations? History says yes, but only time will answer.

What I do know is that they have picked up an extremely high percentage of the guys they literally went after even before they even entered. Way too many guys enter and are practically on their way to CS within hours to believe otherwise. This isn't scrambling at the end of the cycle to land 3 stars to fill out depth. I bet 5-6 of the 12 guys we have picked up already end up starters for us. More than all of 2025 combined (Craver, Concepcion, Onyedim, Boerk)

You may say it's about money, and that COULD be part of it for some. But that's speculative. In reality, I just don't think we value the majority of the same as the services do.

I get what you are saying, but literally everyone went after KC, and nearly everyone Craver.

Ricks, Lee, and a few others were also in high demand. Even in this class, whether some want to believe it or not, had teams like Ohio State, Miami, trying to keep a couple of our guys from committing because they wanted them. We have had a few each portal class that nearly every school in the country would take since Elko has been here.

If you are comparing to Coleman, there's maybe 2-3 guys on Coleman's level a cycle. So no, not quite at that level. Even the 5 star Qbs don't really compare when it comes to how good they actually are.

Well on the last 2, their hit rate on 4* guys does look pretty good.

I hear for every coach we have ever had, we are getting the guys we wanted and "I trust our coaches". So far Elko does seem to be doing good so far.

I like numerous guys we have and I have zero insight into recruiting and evaluations. I can't scour a bunch of tape and when watching highlight reels, they mostly look good because they are highlights. That's why I use ratings and who is offered by what schools.

Rankings are not always accurate but you can normally see that top schools get highly rated guys. Yes I see that Indiana is the exception.

My impression is that we've added players at postions most dedicated fans would have guessed. I believe Elko and Derek Miller are adding guys that they believe will make a difference or at least have some positive impact. The kicker they signed is the one that jumps out to me in terms of upgrading the quality from the previous season, like the wide recievers did last year. The pieces added on the trench positions were required to rebuild from the losses. Even so, I expect we'll get some serious contributions at multiple postions from players that were freshmen and redshirt freshman last year.

I think one of the more amusing things about the new world of college football is that we've gone from fretting about unproven high school signing class rankings to unproven transfer portal addition rankings. Still looking forward to whatever levels of excitement or let downs they will bring either way!
