They ruled the guy who headed the ball after the goalkeeper came out to challenge it as the one who was offside. Which I'm not even sure he was offside when the ball first gets touched after the cross and I'm still not sure that it's not the goalie who punches it upwards.

They ruled it was the player who had the ball prior to the overhead kick as the one that was offside because he was the one who touched it first after the initial challenge on the cross

Looks like it was just crazy perfect timing… there's like a fraction of a second where there's only one player between. You can't even see it in replays. Just have to have it paused at the exact right time.

This is why I hate VAR on offside. Or really I hate the application of offside in the box at all… the intent of the rule is to prevent cherry picking. So many situations like this where it's good football, and defenders have every chance to make a play but are just beat… and then some fractional offside calls it back.

I've gone back and watched it like 5 times. He was on at the kick. It wasn't even close.

Here is a very relevant question. If that was how they determined he was outside why did we not get that replay immediately

They are saying that the Ecuadorian won the initial header on the cross, and at that exact moment the next Ecuadorian who headed the ball was off side by his knee. This is a player who heads it prior to the overhead kick

Yea that's an old rule but you rarely see it. I remember it happening in the South Africa WC called against Mexico, maybe during the opning game.

Offsides is always the second to last defender, not the last defender, because of the goalie.


And after seeing the replay I guess that could be considered offsides. He was the first to touch the ball after the goalie Fd up the punch. A tough call.

This is what happened with the disallowed goal. The ball came off Felix Torres, who was challenging the keeper.

It fell to Michael Estrada, whose foot you can see in an offside position. He headed the ball back to Torres.
