The rules change based on the argument that any given troll wants to make. 'Tis the standards of the Internet.

I don't think a title is the end all in determining a player's value to history. I think it is another notch in their belt to take their legacy up a step.

I think Dirk deserves credit for winning the championship with a bunch of good role players as opposed to superstars. Against THE best player of our generation, and another who will go down as one of the best. Since yall are not Dallas fans for the most part, does that gain any special notoriety with you?

I grew up watching the Spurs battle Shaq and Kobe, so not really. There's always a tough team with 2-3 bigtime stars to beat and the best player isn't always on the best team. The star player was playing great basketball and role players stepped up. That's what it takes to win. That's why the NBA championship means something. No, the Mavs title wasn't any more special or hard-fought or transcendental than any NBA title.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Nowitzki or the Mavs here because it was a great run with a great star and a great team... just like every other championship.

For his playoff career, Carmelo has averaged 24.9, 7.4, 3.0, while Kobe has averaged 25.6, 5.1, 4.7. To say Kobe has "proved it on the court" is a disservice to Carmelo, who has the same numbers.

So you're using Carmelo vs Kobe (zero rings to FIVE) like I used Dirk vs Malone(1 ring to 0)??

That's an apples to escalades comparision sir.

I agree. Karl Malone has huge impact on D-Will signing with Mavs vs Nets.

I see your perspective. The Spurs have always been that tough team with 2-3 stars so pitting that against the other team's 2-3 stars doesn't seem as daunting. I think the Mavs ship was unique in that the one star with many good role player team took down the 3 star team, including the best player in the NBA and another top 5 player in the NBA.

True. Now if we can only trade Dirk for Malone, I bet we get Williams.

The Mavs had two stars when they had Nash and Dirk.

We seemed to get tight with money when we needed it (Nash and Chandler) and made it rain on people like Dampier.

This. If Cubes and Donnie sold out defending a title for a chance at Howard and Williams, only to be shut out, there's gonna be alot of pissed off folks. This town has spent over 30 years waiting for an upper-tier center. If you don't justify that sacrifice, there are going to be a lot of folks taking them to task.

Cuban chose Dampier over Nash. Basically used Nash's money for Dampier.

Many people, including myself agreed. Nash was having some serious back issues in Dallas - so much so that he was laying on the court when he wasn't playing to help it. To exasperate his back, he played a style of game that gets a bit of contact and getting knocked down. No one really thought Nash would play out his contract at a high level. But none of us thought Nash would go from really good PG to back-to-back MVP.

I think that is the only way you can justify is to try to make a run for free agents this summer.

4yr/55mm is a no go for Chandler and 6/yr/60mm is ok for Dampier?

The only way to justify it is to have a shot at DWill/DHow.

Point taken. Obviously the Dampier contract was an albatross. What's your take on Chandler's contract? The new CBA certainly lends it to be an albatross in the last couple years.

Guess it's just hard to see the next 3-5 years working out too well for the Mavs if the calculated risk of aiming for this crop of free agents comes up bare.

For those interested, more on D. Will's decision. Basically saying Avery Johnson and the GM Billy King have a good relationship with Williams.

You'd like to get Williams this year. If that happens, most people will be fine with "throwing away" 2012 season.

But if it doesn't happen this year, Mavs can still land a top shelf player next season. Nelson won't throw away money signing the bridesmaid.

It's similar to the trade for Kidd. It boiled down to simple premise. If it leads to Maverick title, it was worth it. Except the Mavs didn't follow the script. They waited two seasons before actually winning.

Same thing with D-Will. They are setting themselves up to sign huge free agent. I hope it's him. But Mav fans might have to wait an extra year. If it leads to signing premiere player while Dirk is still great, it was worth it.

Chandler was great player, but what team do you have with him? You have awesome player in Dirk and awesome defender in Chandler. You can have some nice fits with Marion and Kidd. But it will be really tough to be able to sign a point guard or another scorer with Chandler's contract on the books. Essentially, you would sacrifice 2013-2017 seasons for shot at repeating.

Comparing payrolls before/after the new CBA isn't that simple. It's a totally different system.

Dirk is a top 15 player of all time.

Dirk knocked out Malone in the 2001 playoffs.

good lord preppyag03 is a ****ing retard... you are just as bad as a tshirt sip. Also you are a ****ing retard when it comes to basketball. And who the **** on this board said that getting Deron puts the Mavs over the top? Please show me. Most of us realize that we have to get a center or we have no chance at beating Miami, OKC, etc. in a seven game series since we can't protect the paint.

If you could read, you would have noticed that my last few posts spelled it with a "z" because I noted the correct spelling when looking something up on wikipedia. Since you brought it up after I corrected my mistake, I'm going to go back to spelling it with an "s" just to tick you off.

I was under the impression that this was a message board and multiple views and opinions were allowed? I didn't see the section on the main page where you have to be a mavs fan to post on a mavs board.

Judge is right. I enjoy watching basketball as a whole. I don't sport championship t-shorts, nor do I refer to a team as "we" like you mavs fans do like you're part of the team or they care about you and what you think. Please let me know when Cuban sends ya'll your championship rings from 2011. I'd love to see them.

And I don't troll, I just have an opposing viewpoint than ya'll and you can't stand that so you call me a troll. I just can't stand all the mavs BS that gets spewed on this board. Until last year it was "oh we got robbed in 2006, the refs hate Cuban and took our championship, Dwayne Wade sucks, etc..." All that was was bitter fans that lost and wanted to blame anything and everything but the fact that your team blew a 2-0 game lead in the NBA finals.

Fast forward to last year and during the championship run you've got Mavs fans saying that Dirk was a better player than Kevin Garnett, Karl Malone, Larry Bird, and LeBron James among others...I'm sorry, but that type of stupidity can't go unchecked. Dirk better than Bird? Really? Dirk has one fantastic run in the playoffs and now he's a top 5 player of all time? Please show me how many times Dirk has been slapped out of the playoffs in the first round (NOTE: the majority of those were as the higher seed...Golden State anyone?)

Then there's this year..."all we need is D-Will and we're back, this year didn't count anyway, we were building for 2013"...Please show me a season where a top 15 player of all time had to take a week during the season to get back in game shape because he sucked it up during the offseason...don't worry, I'll wait

And I became a "heat fan" because I didn't want the mavs to win. I'd have been any fan of a team opposing the Mavs. It makes me laugh that 90% of "mavs fans' can't name a player on the team outside of Dirk. The mavs have perhaps the worst basketball fans in the country, winning or losing. When they win the fans spew best team in the history of sports, Dirk's better than Jordan, blah blah...when they lose it's "the refs hate us, we got robbed," or some other BS excuse. Just be gracious winning or losing, stop with the BS, and accept that not everyone will be a mavs fan or agree that Dirk walks on water...we'll get along much better that way.

Prepyyag,

I dont think you ever answered my question....if you did my apologies.

WHAT IS YOUR NBA TEAM???????

anyteam that's playing the Mavs is not an answer.

Dan07 said it much better then myself but you arent offering opposing view points and raising valid discussions.

What you are doing is making false assertions. (IF the Mavs get D-Will we are back in the Finals) and then arguing against these false assertions.

Typically with some insults thrown in.

This is why nobody on this thread respects you.

and once again......if you arent too scared to tell us all....which NBA team do you root for?

There's a difference between false assertions and generalized statements. I apologize, but I assumed that any move a team makes is designed to get them to a championship. That's my fault for assuming the mavs were the same way.

quote:

No, people don't respect me because I don't think that Dirk walks on water. Mavs fans don't respect anyone that's not a mavs fan, and even less of people that actually voice there opinions in opposition of the mavs.

quote:

Again, for the millionth time, I don't claim an NBA team. I enjoy watching basketball and dish out criticism equally. I usually root for the teams playing against the mavs because, as I said previously, mavs fans are some of the worst fans I've ever encountered. You can attempt to "bait" me all you want by calling me "scared", but that won't change the fact that I enjoy watching the NBA as a whole. I didn't realize that being a basketball fan was predicated on picking a specific team and acting obnoxious win or lose.

I guess I'm just scared to tell you for fear of your vicious rhetoric...

Oh no, you mav fans are absolutely the worst fans I've encountered...That's not a blanket statement, that's a fact based on my experiences. I'd put you on the level of Longhorn fans for whining, make excuses worse than OU fans, and are as disrespectful and rude as Tech fans.
