In watching the Grizz boards, there has always been a backlash against him. He is a lot like Pop, without the intelligent humor. He was confrontational and had no problem correcting guys when they needed to be and didn't put up with a lot of attitude stuff (which is why Allen Iverson lasted about a week). He had no time for the media, and would rather work with a charity than go talk to sportswriters or big fans.
People blamed him for the inept offense, and overlooked the 5 or 6 straight years of improved records, and so when he made a couple comments about the Rudy trade and use of analytics, the haters really overplayed them, and were happy to see him gone.
I believe the new guys want their own guy in there, and ultimately want to reshape the team, but like I wrote this past summer, I think the new guys are over their head.
