I'm very skeptical of bringing in Melo. The only thing that would make me comfortable is if Morey took it as a flyer on Melo with the option to dump him by February if things aren't working out.

Gotta trust Morey knows what he is doing.

We can always cut his ass if he becomes a cancer. He won't be paid like a star anymore if he comes here.

This. I'm a little optimistic given he's never played on an NBA team with a true leader who held him accountable. That said, I don't know if we could break him.

Not to be cynical, but with no way to dump the Anderson K, this does open up a lot more minutes for him in the regular season along with Ariza being gone. We are paying for Anderson regardless, and Moute didn't factor in the playoffs either even when his shoulder was supposedly healed.

Let Anderson start lighting it up again from deep and play starter minutes during the regular season, and then see if he can be moved or at least useful come playoffs.

And ffs sign capella to a multi-year deal if possible, although you know his agent wants to bide his time until next year when the cap goes up and some team will offer a max k. Ideally you pay him some number somewhat less than the max this year for a number of years so he can start banking now.

The worry is that Tillman spent pretty much his entire net worth to purchase the team, and is loathe to luxury tax the roster to win.

This off-season is looking like a bust. We are not going to be as good as last year much less better.

Guys, my jumper is on fire right now. I've also learned how to flop by watching the warriors and LeBron. I will take the vet minimum.

Lots of Melo to Rockets chatter.
Chatter like the chatter that your homeboys bring up in the group-text, or is it credible chatter? Because I've heard plenty of the former but nothing substantive from the latter.

Credible chatter.

Yep you were right, and it's being reported widely now too

Damn $60M is way too low of an offer for Clint. I don't blame him at all for holding out.

He absolutely is worth that much. He protects the rim extremely well, is very athletic, and can switch onto smaller guards unlike other great defensive bigmen like Gobert and Embiid. In any other offseason, someone would throw him a max.

Not to distract from the doom and gloom but I would like to point out a few things:

1- Mbah Moute was unplayable in the playoffs. I know he was injured, but let's not act like he was an integral piece in the Rockets puzzle.
2-Ariza's defense will be missed. But let's not forget that for long stretches, including the playoffs, he could kill an offense with his cold streaks. In 34 minutes in the playoffs, he averaged roughly 9 pts, 4 Reb, 1 ast, and 1 stl. That's a lot of minutes for not alot of production.
3-Gerald Green, who we did resign(for much less than either of the previous 2)and will probably get a good amount of those minutes was much more productive.
4-Due to fortunate timing based around a center heavy draft class and lack of cap space league wide, our 24 year old center that just dominated KAT and Gobert in the playoffs will likely have to settle for a hugely discounted contract.
5- Harden has gotten better every single year.
6- This team will play defense as long as CP3 and PJ are on the team. That includes Melo if he comes. It's not a coincidence that Harden suddenly gets much better as a defender when those 2 start barking in your ear.
7-Judging Melo by his play alongside Westbrook would be crazy. His style makes everyone worse.

Top 10 highest paid Centers in the league are making between 22-29 mill a year. I think its reasonable for Clint to be in the 20+ range. The Rockets have the luxury of throwing out the 4yr/60 deal with how the market looks this year alone. If you are Clint, you either take the money now and guarantee yourself at least that over the next 3-4 years depending on a 4th year option, or you take a one year deal and then try for a max in free agency next year. The latter involving a lot of risk if you get injured.

In regards to how the offseason is shaking out, I really don't get the negative reaction from social media and other Rockets fans. We lost Luc and Ariza. Arguably two of your better defenders, but you still have guys like Paul, Capela, and Tucker. Hell, even Harden and Gordon looked decent on defense last year. You sure as hell weren't paying Ariza 15 mill for one year. He is a streaky shooter and the last few seasons he pretty much disappeared in the playoffs when the moment got too big. Might miss his veteran presence. On Luc, he wasn't the same after coming back from his shoulder injury. Missing wide open layups and easy buckets, and not able to defend as well. Will he eventually fully recover and return to his normal self? Maybe.

I don't see Capela leaving. He may only sign for one year, but he will likely be in a Rockets uniform come October. You return Paul, Harden, Capela, Tucker, Green, and Gordon. We are in good shape, and just need to be patient for now.

I agree but we need to make some moves before the trade deadline this year. We need tall perimeter defenders that can keep up with Durant.

I agree, they interviewed Morey during Summer League and he said something along the lines of "We need to have our best team by the trade deadline or April 15th" - he knows he has some work to do

$15mm is way out of line. Here are the top 25 cap hits at center. I think Capela unquestionably deserves to be in that top 10 range and don't think his $25mm is unfair. His ability to switch out on defense and interrupt the pick and roll is invaluable.

He's a top 10 C, but that doesn't mean he has to be paid like one. He's worth what someone is will to pay him. At this point, all the teams were either unable or unwilling to pay him. His option is to take the deal Houston offers or not. In the end, he'll likely make more by not and hitting the open market again next year, but that isn't a guarantee. He may want more security. Houston may bid against itself a little and maybe they come to terms.

Offer 4 year/$85 million. Meet in the middle and close to the salary as DeAndre Jordan.

$85 million is too much for the market right now based on the leverage the Rockets have.. I expect the Rockets to up it to 4 for $70-75 but set a line there. Capela is looking for somewhere in the $24 million per range. Even if everything goes right for him and he signs his q.o. and everything goes well and then gets his $24 a year from now, he makes $79 million over the next 4 years since q.o. is only 4.7. He looks at what happened to Cousins and signs that $70 million deal if offered, No reason financially for Rockets to get anywhere near $80-85.

The problem is you risk alienating him and having him sign with one of the teams that have max money next year. Maybe you have to overpay for him next year.

Maybe he blows something out like Boogie but they do have insurance for that. I don't see him disappearing like Nerlens did.

Or maybe he fakes an injury and hires his uncle as his agent, then sits out the rest of the season.

Maybe he gets injured, its misdiagnosed, and handled poorly which alienates him and then he leaves. Has that ever happened before?

He was using his own doctors before the season started.

I think the underlying issues are that Nike/Jordan offered to reup him, but the contract was just 4y20mm for playing in SA, but it would be larger in LA. Plus being from LA and having family there.

Durant is making $25mm/year. Harden is making $14mm/year. Steph is making $12mm/year. Dame is making $11mm/year. That's obviously just their shoe deals.

Kawhi's ~$5mm/yr offer is in line with Westbrook's deal while playing in OKC.

He did that after he felt he was misdiagnosed the year before.

However, I trust the Rockets medical staff not to make a major mistake like that with Capela or any other Rocket.

Quote:

"The Rockets meeting included coach Mike D'Antoni, who had a turbulent relationship with Anthony as New York Knicks coach. D'Antoni made it clear to Anthony that he thinks the circumstances together would be far different in Houston, and welcomed the idea of coaching Anthony again, league sources said."

Tbh Melo did ruin Coach Pringles' rep. Very honorable that he doesn't hold that against Melo.
