Thought this was funny from Skip at the boxing match in Vegas this past Saturday. People also saw Kawhi wearing his spurs championship ring.

I bet Kawhi really wanted to wear his jorts and puka shell necklace with that shirt.

Too bad the Spurs didn't have young pieces on pay with Dipo and Sabonis. Murray++White+LMA+PG13+Kawhi would be pretty stout.

Even if the Spurs traded for PG, I think Uncle Dennis would have screwed the Spurs because the Spurs weren't about to give him a big job, house, etc and Dennis wanted a big market so he could get a big shoe deal for Kawhi.

NBA has opened an investigation into Uncle Dennis and nephew for trying to get additional compensations for Dennis and family members outside of what is allowed by the CBA.

Teams look to go back to two-big lineups after the Bosh/Battier and Death Lineup has moved the NBA to smallball.

Clearly teams are gearing up to beat that Poetl/TheMarcus/Gay/DeRozan/Murray lineup.

I'm not surprised that it will start to trend the other way, but I don't think we'll ever get back to the days of two back to the basket bigs playing high low from the free throw line. For two big lineups to really work, one them still needs to be able to shoot from 3 a little bit.

There have been a lot of rumblings about LMA wanting to go back to Portland, the latest from Gasol. He still has two years left on his contract, after which he will be 36. I'm sure he will play his contract out, but it is interesting.

I'm not surprised LA would want to finish his career where it started, and it's unclear whether or not it would be in his or the Spurs best interest to resign him in two years. Unless guys like White, Dejounte, and Lonnie take some really big jumps in the next couple years where we look like true contenders again, there's no real reason for either side to want to resign.

What kind of potential cap space will we have?

It depends.

Spurs can waive LMA and he is guaranteed just 7mm, which can be stretched across 3 seasons, so 2.33mm cap hit.

DeRozan can opt out and walk away.

Free agents:
Marco
Poetl
Bryn (5.4 cap hold)
Dejonte (7mm cap hold RFA)
Lyles has 5.5mm that is not guaranteed

Roster assuming DeRozan walks and LMA is cut:
Dejonte (7mm cap hold)
Gay 14.5
Patty 13.3
Lonnie Walker IV 2.9
Keldon Johnson 2mm
Derrick White 3.5mm
Luka 2.8mm

So 46mm committed to 7 players, assuming we give up on TheMarcus/DeRozan. Plus cap holds of 900k for each of the 5 spots needed to get to 12 spots. So 52.8mm in salaries+hold+cut LMA for DeJonte+5 cap holds on 118mm projected salary cap. So almost 70mm in cap space, or two maxish contracts.

I'd be real interested in trying to sign Jaylen Brown. He'd fit in real nice with our young core as an actual 3 that is a capable defender.

If we are losing LMA and DeRozan, we probably need someone better than Jaylen. I agree he would fit well, but I see him being an excellent 3rd option guy rather than your #1 or #2 guy.

Honestly, I expect Demar to opt in and to keep LA and for the 2021 offseason to be the year we try to make a bigger splash in free agency. However, Brown is still super young and he's played along side other guys that had to have the ball kn their hands a lot more while in Boston. I don't think he's ever gonna be THE guy, but I think he could be a solid #2 option if given the chance to have the ball and be more assertive. Also, big 2 way wings are a hot commodity with not a great abundance of quality out there. We struggled for years to replace Bruce Bowen and now we're struggling to replace Kawhi (clearly on a completely different level than Bowen). Brown gives us a really good SF to go next to Murray, White, and Walker to defend bigger guys on the perimeter.

It's not perfect like golden state signing KD, but I think it would be worth it if we had the cap space.

He's restricted, so you are going to have to way overpay to get him. I just don't see him as a max guy ever, but that is likely what it will cost to get him and if Boston is close to the title, they may match anyway.

Restricted free agency is such a crapshoot. As much as I'd love to have Brown, it's highly unlikely the Spurs would pursue that.

It's really tough to figure out what they'll need... got a lot of young guys who could make the leap next year - or not.

Well, without Aldridge they need a post unless Samanic puts on 30 pounds and realizes his potential (or Metu makes the leap, but I'm not holding my breath). If no one steps up as at least a second tier PG, they should use a max to get one. And if no one with size figures out how to shoot threes, they'll need a legit shooter who can stay on the floor defensively in the playoffs.

Am I the only one that thinks the way to get the most out of Derrick White is to let him run the offense off the bench, like what Manu did? There's your second PG, who's still capable of playing off the ball alongside Dejounte.

I dont see the Spurs parting ways with LMA unless something drastic happens. DD is up in the air. I'm sure they like him but it's so much easier to find scoring perimeter players.

This season feels like a bit of a turning point. So many young guys. Will any of them truly emerge to make a case for being the future core of this franchise? Also keep in mind DJ is a RFA after this season. If he plays well I could see a team making a play and driving his cost up early.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?

DJ is gonna be like Green, I think. If his shot develops, he could be a solid asset to a team. He doesn't really create well. He will have tremendous value to a team like either LA team or Milwaukee, but will have little value to most other teams. You don't really need a defensive specialist perimeter defender if you are a sub-50 win team.
Ulrich

White was a better offensive point guard last year than Murray has been so far. Not sure what that means for rotations, it's such a junky lineup on the perimeter right now. Murray and DeRozan is the worst shooting backcourt possible though, it won't work in the playoffs. Maybe start White and have Murray play the three on offense. If he has figured out a 35% corner three that might actually be a good lineup. He'd be a great secondary perimeter scorer who is more than capable of slashing to the rim and knocking in offensive rebounds if someone else can warp the defense first.
