The fact that Marco is getting minutes ahead of Walker is egregious. Marco is a corpse on defense especially in transition. In addition to the turnovers last night, our defense was pretty bad.

It's not even surprising to me. Pop's always been a 'culture/korporate knowledge' guy, over youth.

It's ridiculous at this point that Marco is taking minutes like this though. Marco should be someone you put in and if he hits his first couple of shots you keep him in. If not, he gets pulled right away. Because he's a turnstyle defensively and if he's not putting the ball in the hoop at the offensive end, he's not doing jack to help.

But Pop would rather soap box about Trump these days than take a hard look at what's left of the old guard and what they contribute.
This is a bad, lazy take.

Marco demands defenders to stay close to him along the perimeter. He moves constantly off the ball on offense, and does so very well. By being Marco, he creates much needed space for others to operate.

Does that make him a net positive when he's not hitting? No. But the spacing is likely better right now with Marco on the floor than Lonnie, because Lonnie is another mid range guy. Lonnie is important to our future, absolutely, and I expect he will get some minutes and potentially relegate Marco to the bench/spot up minutes by season's end, but Marco has a purpose right now that Lonnie can't fulfill.

A whole bunch of this.

I think by the all star break Lonnie will be playing more minutes than Marco. And while Marco is an awful defender, Lonnie isn't exactly a lock down guy. Tons of potential, but he still has a tendency to get lost when he'd off the ball. Pop will work him in and those rotations will get easier and easier for him, but it's not worth getting this fired up over after one game.

Crazy game tonight. Bertans went off on his former team. Pop is really experimenting with his lineups. In the end, offensive fire power got the win. I couldn't help but notice that the last possession saw both White and Murray on the floor together for the first time. And Walker got his first few minutes and looked good.

Maybe Pop will start to use White and Murray together towards the end of the games for now. It makes sense if we want to make stops. Their defense against Beal at the end was beautiful and maybe a sign of things to come. It would just be an awkward fit with them and DeMar (who found a grove tonight).

I thought walker looked good on offense but defensively he looked meh, fouling a player for an And 1 after getting beat off the dribble. Another occasion he gambled after a steal that led to a switch with LMA on a smaller guard, which led to a three for the Wizards. But in both of these instances it's just discipline he has to learn. I'd still like for him to get these minutes. He can really shove it down the other teams' throat, especially with DJ.

The crazy thing is it was Patty on Beal at the end. Beal drove and Murray plus White met him in the paint.

Right now they have Murray on a minutes restriction which is why he wasn't in down the stretch. I don't think they are playing them together right now so that they can have one of them fresh on the court most of the time.

Ditto the minutes restriction from the poster above. I also think I read Will Hardy's lips last night, something along the lines of there's only 5.5 seconds left, so I'm assuming Pop had to be talked into Murray going back in...because he was technically done for the night.

So I think White and Murray eventually share the floor. But until both are playing more minutes, they will run their respective units.

Marco's averaging 28% shooting and two points per game. And gives us nothing defensively. Teams are daring him to shoot. I stand by my earlier remarks there - give his minutes to Lonnie if he misses his first two shots in a game.

And come on guys. I don't think Pop's focusing on politics at the detriment of prep time for the team. At the same time, when it's clear our team needs work, and there's obvious personnel and strategy type things he could be improving on, I think he just needs to shut up and coach. Especially when he's pulling a LeBron and giving China a reach around while talking trash about Trump.

Two things I know for sure.

1. You can talk sh*t about politics and still do your job. All this "shut up and coach" is just stupid. Pops love of wine probably hurts more than any so called distraction.

2. 99% of the players think Trump is a chump. So Pops opinion of him doesnt hurt in the slightest.

We're all in favor of Lonnie getting more minutes at Marco's expense, we're just not freaking out that Pop is going with the vet more to start the season. Also, we're two games into the season, not exactly a huge sample size on his shooting.

Lucky to win that when the game should have been over a long time ago. Got to learn how to finish and Demar needs to make his free throws in the end.

Lillard is insane. Hard not to like that guy when he plays tough all the time.

Felt like we wanted to lose that game. Lillard had too many good looks, lucky it didn't go to OT. All DeRozan had to do was hit a free throw.

Only saw the second half, but shooting looked good until Lillard went off and we went cold. We were getting good open shots off ball movement. This is the first game I've gotten to see this season but I'm excited about the young talent! Hopefully our guys show up Thursday and put up a good fight against Kawhi.

I don't know that I've ever seen a game where both teams were up by 19 at one point and the game ends up a one possession result.

The team went cold from the outside and it coincided with Lilliard getting into one of those crazy zones. I love the big shots by White at the end. DD missing FTs didnt feel so great. Lots of careless TOs in this game. Spurs have 21, 9, and 18 TOs in the 3 games respectively. I thought I heard they never had more than 17 in any game last year. Get that feel back and this team will be tough.

First half Portland was hitting everything and the Spurs were struggling. Murray played good defense on Lillard but didn't play down the stretch for minutes restriction. Can't wait until Murray can play longer and finish the games.

Also, Murray is putting up good all around numbers for the limited minutes he is playing.

Not putting Portland away at the end was frustrating, but I'm going to attribute some of that to Dejounte being on a minutes restriction. Derrick is a good defender, but Dejounte is a great defender and his length and quickness bothered Lillard all night. Later in the season, DJ probably comes back in to help make life difficult on Lillard and he doesn't just go nuts like that.

Really good game from Derrick White. He's so sneaky good attacking the basket.

It's great to have him back, he can definitely make a difference on both ends. Derrick White was clutch for us and probably won us the game. Loved seeing him pick up Lillard in full court pressure to keep the ball out of his hands, we should've done that sooner.

Derp, completely missed you talking about Dejounte'a minutes restriction...

If he can ever get his handles to catch up to his speed in the open court, he'll be a transition nightmare.

This year any win, especially against a playoff team in the west, is huge. This was their first test against a good team and they weathered the storm. Say what you want, but there are only 4 undefeated teams in the league and the Spurs are one of them. Every win is big in the west.

The good:
  • Derrick White seems like he's on the road back to being last season Derrick White. He was aggressive, assertive, and crafty getting to the rim.
  • DeMar had a fantastic game save the 2 last FTs. Pop probably should have brought him back in sooner when we couldn't buy a bucket in the 4th and Portland went on their comeback.
  • LA had a really, really strong game defending the post in my opinion. I think he ended with 5 blocks? I also thought he was pretty solid with his PnR defense (or at least better than usual).
  • We beat a WC team. It wasn't pretty. We maybe should have lost, but I would argue they should have too...both teams came back after being down big and made it a 1 possession game at the end. I'll take any win against the West, especially against Dame and CJ.
  • Murray is disruptive on defense, very disruptive. I think if he isn't on a minutes restriction, there's a good chance Lilliard never gets going and we don't all feel like we suffered heart attacks last night.

The bad:
  • We can't run a fast break well to save our lives. That HAS to improve. We should have plenty of opportunities with DJ and DW manning our back court.
  • Murray's control needs work. He's young, hungry, aggressive, and riding high on being back playing basketball, but he's our point guard and he has to play smarter offensively. If we are more successful on 50% of our fast breaks, I think we blow Portland out. I still think he could easily be dominant and a borderline All Star this season, but last night is the bad with DJ. He can't have those nights.
  • Inconsistency continues to plague us. I firmly believe that if we stay focused for 48 mins/game, we can beat anyone and make a run in the playoffs. We have talent, we have coaching, but we need to play smarter and with more focus for entire games.
  • The refs sucked. Both sides. We got calls we shouldn't have gotten. They got calls they shouldn't have gotten. I have no idea what a foul is anymore after last night.

But, who cares, we won. On to LAC.

Spurs have had a losing record for only 65 days over the last 23 years, a number that shouldn't change with our good start. Hopefully we have more success on the road this year than last year. Would be great if we could at least play .500 ball on the road.
