The Ibanez signing makes little to no sense.
He will be purely a DH.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/12/angels-to-sign-raul-ibanez.htmlWith Hamilton and Pujols, it is a natural fit for them to end up DH quite often.
Last year, Pujols played 65 Games as DH (266 AB) and Hamilton played 37 (146 AB). That is 102 GP by just those two guys. I can't imagine that is significantly different in 2014.
For OF they have Hamilton, Trout, Calhoun (26) and J.B. Shuck (26). Calhoun and Shuck are both LH hitters, as is Ibanez. As is Hamilton for that matter.
If you expect Hamilton to get more time in the OF (ie healthy), Calhoun or Shuck could easily get ABs as DH.
Just seems like a weird signing, IMO. Especially when their main need is SP.
With only a $20M posting for Tanaka... IMO, this signing could very well take them out of the running.

As Fletcher points out (on Twitter), this move places the Angels within roughly $15MM of the $189MM luxury tax threshold, but that doesn't figure to stop the team from pursuing Matt Garza or Masahiro Tanaka (in the event that he is posted).
Yu was posted at $51.7M + then signed at 6yr/$60M... as many have stated that is $111.7M for 6 years, but only the $10M/yr counts against the Cap. Swing that to a $20M posting and $91.7M, under today's rules, and that 6yrs is now $15.3M annually. Since multiple teams can post $20M and then the Agent negotiate teams against each other... IMO, the negotiations start at $15.3M and suddenly the Angels are out. The Yanks with signing Roberts would presumably be bumping into the Cap. I believe the Dodgers are well over the Cap, but supposedly still interested.
