Not wholly disappointed to see Rodney go. He was too inconsistent last year for my taste.

Heyward is very over-rated. He has over 1,800 MLB at-bats already with a meager .259 career average

Everything else is pretty good, though. Especially if you're an advanced metrics guy, he's been a pretty good producer during his career.

I don't think, at this point, anyone is still pumping him as the best power hitter or best prospect/young player or whatever, and I think that's a pretty fair contract he signed. You're not going to venture out into free agency and sign a guy with his numbers for much less than that.

and Freeman...this is why GM's are reluctant to bring up players and start their MLB service/free agency clock.

having to shell out $135 million for a player who has had one above average season and just turned 24 years old...no guarantee he's going to repeat or sustain that success as the league adjust to him

And its not that, because they didn't need to do this. He is in his first arbitration off-season. [I wouldn't have given out that contract but the Braves must have bigger balls than I do]

Besides, is there significant evidence that a guy who does what Freeman did aged 21-23 is less likely to sustain it than a guy who did what Freeman did aged, I don't know, 24-26?

Also, would you rather pay a guy that money during his 24-31 aged years or would you rather pay a guy that money in his more advanced 32+ years?

Homer Bailey, not Andrew, but yes, 100 million for 6 years seems like quite the gamble.

Cruz to Orioles for 1/8. Guessing he'd like a do-over.
COOL LASER FALCON

That's way lower than I expected for Cruz.

I guess when he's gone, he's gone, but I would have been happy to see the Rangers give Cruz 1 for $10. But to the point above, at least they'll get a pick.

brett gardner gets 4/52M extension with the yankees. Great deal for him and he'll pretty much be a yankee for the rest of his prime. he deserves it

Trout and Angels nearing deal for 6/150 or so.

i saw that. Apparently it would be a backloaded deal, too. Read on Yahoo that it could possibly pay 38M his final year

Cruz wanted to play more OF to rebuild his value for 2015, although that logic may be as sound as turning down a $14 mill qualifying offer, turning down multi-year offers, and ultimately having to settle for $8 mill. I'm not sure MORE outfield butchering helps his case.

Not a great deal money wise for him. He likely could have gotten much more in free agency. But it sounded like he wanted to stay with the Yankees and decided to take much less money and not deal with free agency.

yep. he said he wanted to be a yankee for life. They should've locked him up last year, but you can only do so much sometimes. Definitely a below market value contract but it's still life altering money that will make sure his children and grandchildren can be set up

Crazy that we're talking about this deal being below market value. $13M a year for a 31 year old (when the contract starts) speed player.

What would you say "market value" would've been? I'm not arguing, genuinely interested in the response.

Mmmm. I'm not so sure about that.

He got slotted right where that second group of outfielders behind Ellsbury and Choo have been put throughout the league. (Talking Beltran, Granderson...going back to Bourn and Pagan)

Thing is, this late, the big money had started to dry up. It happens every year to someone at pretty much every position. I'm sure it makes it easier to "stay home" and "take less money".

About 13 million a year.

CC has been busy this offseason:

I know he's been gradually losing weight over the last couple of years, but he looks flat out lanky now.

Wait, that's really him? I thought that second pic was a joke when I saw it a few weeks ago.

That looks like a lot of weight lost in a pretty short time.

Might work for Jack and Jane Doe, I wonder what the net effects will be over the course of an entire professional baseball season.

Should be interesting.

That is insane to sign a player until he is 40 at 31mm AAV. Contracts in baseball keep getting crazier and crazier. At least the Dodgers are getting Kershaw at his prime, you're extending a guy from 32 to 40 and you don't exactly have a stocked farm system to keep bring up talent around him. In fact, Detroit has an awful farm system right now.
