Correct call but a crappy way to end it. Joyce called it right away.

Never seen a game end like that...ever. Looked like the correct call, but wow, what a way to decide it.

Awful way for a World Series game to end.

That was crazy ending. I think the call was correct.

There have been some really crappy defense in this game. What a horrible play at third base.

Sucks to end like that, but definitely the correct call.

What is the rule you think that is correct? I don't know the rule but believe it is intent, which I do not see.

Middlebrooks legs came up and got in the way. Don't think he did it on purpose but wow...

They rule that Craig would have scored had he not tripped on Middlebrooks.

Yep, right call. I don't think 3B meant to stick his legs up, probably just trying to get off the ground. But you have to call what you see. I think I've mentioned that I'm an umpire on this board before, so sorry for the overkill, but watching that game end on a correctly and gustily called interference play gives me the warm and fuzzies.

I think the call was correct.

Not the way you want to see a game end, but you've got to make the calls the same you'd make them in the 4th inning of a mid-July Wednesday afternoon snoozer.

Salty shouldve eaten it. Dumb throw in that situation with Kosma on deck.

Wow.

OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner.

Rule 2.00 (Obstruction) Comment: If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and if the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered “in the act of fielding a ball.” It is entirely up to the judgment of the umpire as to whether a fielder is in the act of fielding a ball. After a fielder has made an attempt to field a ball and missed, he can no longer be in the “act of fielding” the ball. For example: an infielder dives at a ground ball and the ball passes him and he continues to lie on the ground and delays the progress of the runner, he very likely has obstructed the runner.

I'm surprised they pitched to Jay in that situation anyway with Kozma coming up.

Middlebrooks was on the ground because he was making a play. His legs are the only thing that moved and they didn't trip Craig. He was stumbling as he tried to jump over him. Basically, middlebrooks would've had to disappear from existence to not be in the way there. I just don't like the call, especially with the game on the line.

Just my opinion.

I'd think him attempting to stand would have been more interference than lying there.

Please tell me how he could've avoided him. It was immediate.

He needed to bend his legs to trip him?

It was complete interference.

Did you watch the replay? His feet didn't trip him. He was stumbling as he went over him which made it look like middlebrooks caused contact

Yes, he got greedy trying to get Craig at 3rd IMO. With Kozma, who might as well be a pitcher given how terrible his hitting has been, coming up, they very likely could have gotten out of it.

I did watch the replay and his legs interfered. Sorry. But when he saw him running, he bent his legs to interfere.

It was semi-risky throw from Salty.

However, you have a chance to shut them down in the ninth. The initial play at plate was simple and no collision, so he was able to fire a good throw.

Middlebrooks just crapped in the bed. That's a play that you expect a high school kid to make.

I said obstruction right away. I'm okay with that call, and considering who made it, I'll believe he doesn't want to make headlines again.

You didn't watch the replay if you think anything below his knees tripped him. Craig puts his hands on middlebrooks back as he's jumping/stumbling over him. If anything, he trips over his waist are, not his Lower legs.

It could have been avoided by catching the ball, or better yet, not throwing it down there in the first place.

In the end- Salty made the throwing error and throwing errors usually result in runners advancing. Call was probably the correct one

Intent doesn't matter. When you throw a ball away into left field, the runners advance. That's how it goes. Sox have no beef here.

On the replay, it looked like Craig was tagged out at the plate by only a foot or so. Its reasonable to assume he would have scored had he not tripped over Middlebrooks upwardly bent legs. I believe that's what the umpire ruled.

Right, if he actually did trip over his upwardly bent legs, which he didn't.
