I think it does, unless I'm missing an exception.

Rule 7.05: The fact a runner is awarded a base...without liability to be put out does not relieve him of the responsibility to touch the base he is awarded...He may be called out on appeal...

Unlikely the red sox manager appealed that. U got to think he just argued just the obstruction call itself. Likely a moot point.

From the replay, it looks like the runner may just barely have gotten the edge. Once Home Plate ump signaled "safe," the play was over. This is one thing the ump did wrong, in my opinion. Once a play was being attempted on the runner, he should have called the play dead, pointed to the plate and waited for the runner to touch.

quote:
7.06 When obstruction occurs, the umpire shall call or signal “Obstruction.”

(a) If a play is being made on the obstructed runner, or if the batter-runner is obstructed before he touches first base, the ball is dead and all runners shall advance, without liability to be put out, to the bases they would have reached, in the umpire’s judgment, if there had been no obstruction. The obstructed runner shall be awarded at least one base beyond the base he had last legally touched before the obstruction. Any preceding runners, forced to advance by the award of bases as the penalty for obstruction, shall advance without liability to be put out.

Rule 7.06(a) Comment: When a play is being made on an obstructed runner, the umpire shall signal obstruction in the same manner that he calls “Time,” with both hands overhead. The ball is immediately dead when this signal is given; however, should a thrown ball be in flight before the obstruction is called by the umpire, the runners are to be awarded such bases on wild throws as they would have been awarded had not obstruction occurred. On a play where a runner was trapped between second and third and obstructed by the third baseman going into third base while the throw is in flight from the shortstop, if such throw goes into the dugout the obstructed runner is to be awarded home base. Any other runners on base in this situation would also be awarded two bases from the base they last legally touched before obstruction was called.

Sure. I think the talking point is had he appealed it, would he had won the appeal, and would that have been the right decision?

He touched the plate after the call.

Video of it?

That may be correct, but I've not seen it.

He slid (maybe touched, maybe didn't touch), laid on the ground, not touching the plate in video I have seen, and was swarmed, during which he finally stood up/got pulled up and was a few feet from the plate, and then the Cards all kind of scooted towards the dugout.

Absolutely the right call. Boston fans will still blame a Series loss on this and ***** about it for years to come though. I know one who has basically conceded the series and wants Joyce lynched

Funny how Red Sox fans were not screaming about the foreign substance that a pitcher appeared to be using in game 1...

Neither were the MLB nor the Cardinals (other than a minor league pitcher who I assume has already been shopped to another team for breaking some unwritten code). So what is your point?

Tonight is a MUST win game for the Sox. If they lose tonight, it is pretty much over.

I'm not sure I like the idea of putting intent into the obstruction rule.

LOL at them saying how unusual a play it was when a nearly identical play is used as an example in the actual rules.

4-1 Boston after the top of the 6th. 2 outs now in the bottom of the 6th.

3 run home run by Jonny Gomes, scoring Pedroia and Ortiz.

Freakin' Descalso swinging at ball 4 could have scored on that double and chipped into the lead.

Nice outing by Doubront.

Bet the Rangers fans are wondering where this weak hitting non-clutch Freese was a couple years ago.

Cards choking away scoring chances stranding Molina at 3rd and not making the Sox pay for wildness in the field with a weak ass pop up by Jay and a weak grounder by Freese.

Cards have gotten little to nothing from the lower portion of their order (Freese, Kozma) in this series.

We may never see another normal ending to a World Series game again.
