Because the ballot is sort of like the rides at amusement parks. You have to be at least 5'6" to get put on it.

If he played in Boston or NY he would be a starter and it wouldn't be close.

124 Hits... not 134. Night is still young, I suppose.

I'd be a whole lot less upset about the way this year has turned out if next year didn't look to be a whole lot of the same.

I don't think next year looks that bad.

quote:
Gallo getting time at 1st base now... Among other things that means even the Rangers are taking the approach of "we're not sure if Prince Fielder will ever be Prince Fielder again".

That may have less to do with Fielder and more to do with Pena. I don't know, I haven't heard an update on Fielder.

Robbie Ross is remaining in the SP role.

JP Arencibia is playing 1B for Round Rock. Gallo is doing well in Frisco... You can't believe that is anything more than a stop-gap... So you'll have a hole in RR... might as well let Gallo get promoted.

I thought (like many) Ryan Rua would get moved. That appears not to be the case.

I do have concerns about 2015. We are having problems filling AAA and AA... let alone filling all the wholes on the ML team. SP appears to be abundant in the offseason. That can be easily cured. The sucks this year have been mostly about SP.

Worst case all signed for 2015:
Choo-Martin-Rios
Beltre-Andrus-Odor-1B=Open
Chirinos\Giminez (Serviceable)
DH=Open

Aside from Darvish, we have nothing but uncertainty in the rotation for 2015.

If they take the options on Rios and Soria... (About $14M?) They'll have 11 players (counting Harrison) signed for $123M, with relief from Harrison.
Arbs: Feliz, Moreland, Ogando, JPA, Ross, Giminez
Serfs: Choice, Odor, Nick Martinez, Nick Tepesch

So - 3 SPs needed, 1B (Fielder) and a DH.

To remain flat for payroll... if they get $10M from Harrison, they'll have about $10M more to reach $133M. That's $20M for 4 Serfs and 4 Arbs that really haven't done anything this year and 1 Arb that is killing it (Giminez).

Hopefully Holland and Fielder return to form and we can pick up an additional FA SP.

I don't trust the defensive metrics that fangraphs uses to calculate WAR anymore...

So yes, Kinsler is ahead of Altuve in WAR, but that is based off Kinsler being miles ahead in defense. I don't believe that is the case. The shift messes up fangraphs defensive metrics, and the Astros shift more than any other team in baseball and it isn't even close.

wRC+
Altuve 129
Kinsler 125

Altuve is a better offensive player.

You don't think next year looks that bad but then go on to say we need at least 3 starting pitchers, a power bat first baseman and a DH.

With an outfield that has two guys that can't hit lefties?

In a division currently sporting 3 of the best run differentials in baseball, all practically bringing back their entire squads?

Right now if Fielder comes back and produces and Holland pitches like a #2 (which he's yet to do consistently in his career), you're still looking at a lineup that relies heavily on 36 year old Beltre to produce and still with 3 holes in the rotation.

We won't be 0.430 baseball next year, but as of now we look like we'll be a 0.500ish team in a division full of 0.550 teams.

Considering what we've lost each year for the past 3-4 years... those are easy fills. And as I've mentioned... SPs are abundant (as of now) this offseason.

Some names:
Josh Beckett
Yovani Gallardo
Aaron Harang
Jason Hammel
Jon Lester
Max Scherzer
James Shields

BTW... Verlander is 4.71\1.49.

Rios is .373 \ 2HRs in 75 AB
Choo is .261\4HRs in 92 AB

Now, Leonys... needs to improve, certainly. Or maybe we get Jeff Baker, back. ;-) Of course,
Robertson is .321\0HRs in 28 ABs

Now... in fairness, it is also a Division with two teams fielding the worst teams in MLB (27th and 30th).
Oak is 106-63, or +43 against just Texas and Houston.

And Oakland just gave up their 2 best prospects and a SP to fill two holes in their rotation this season.
LAAA has it's issues. $123M tied up with 9 guys. Headlined with CJWilson (33), Pujols (34) and Hamilton (33).

Yes, we are probably looking at .500 with Holland and Fielder being just a little better than we've had in their roles... We've gotten .226\10HRs out of our 1B position. Fielder batting his career .285... and at 30, you'd like to think he has 2-3 more years left... would get us 3-4 more wins. Holland over Saunders... likely another 3-4 wins. Signing a decent DH (we've gotten .260\10HRs) gets us another 2-3 Wins... that's a net of about 10-13 Wins.
81 Ws @ .500
91 Ws puts us in the hunt.

Add Odor getting another year (being a whole 21). We have 14 guys on the DL for $53M... and we are 6 Wins from .500. We went into the season with two converted RPs (Ross and Scheppers), a scrap heap pickup (Saunders) and a guy 22 yo who pitched in AA (Nick Martinez), last season.

Even if we return using the now 23 year old (Martinez) and Nick Tepesch improves slightly (he'll be 26, so you'd expect)... Darvish and Holland... you get any one of the guys mentioned above... and we are in a much better place.

Big name free agent pitchers who have signed with Texas in the last decade:

Kevin Millwood

Choo at best is going to give you 0.260 against lefties. Based on the last few years, it's more likely he'll give you sub 0.250.

Martin hasn't been able to hit lefties his whole short career, I doubt he magically becomes good at it next year.

Oakland had the best rotation ERA in baseball before the trade. They just added Samardzija for not just this year but also next. Oh yeah, they also get Griffin and Parker back next year.

Issues with what, being 16 games over 0.500?

Yeah that's a net of about 10-13 wins... over what we have right now -- which based on win % is a 70 win team. So you're not bumping up into 90 win "in the hunt" territory... You're bumping up into 80 win "0.500 ball" territory.

Nick Martinez has a 5+ ERA.

Nick Tepesch has as many horrible starts as good starts.

At this point those two are absolute crapshoots for rotation production next year.
