Dunning has always been fascinating to me.

He had a pretty solid 2023 (3.75 ERA). Added a pitch in the offseason... he called it a forkball... in irder to improve the differential between his 91mph FB and his offspeed.

The pitch never materialized and while he went a couple IP in a GS with good results, at some point, he'd get in trouble and give up a HR.

Was it just not being able to get through the lineup 3x? Getting tired (mentally/physically)?

I agree he is likely a swing man... but hopefully he can chew some innings.

Here is a good interview:

He talks about other Ps, including Leiter.

BTW...

For Dunning - times facing a batter in a game:
2023: .242, .252, .258
2024: .195, .222, .364

Without digging in, it'd be interesting to know if the 3rd time through was the result of a failed forkball in 2024. Could be he saved some pitches early in the time through the lineup in 2023 and in 2024 used them more early and got exposed.

If he hasn't improved his 2ndary pitches, let him go 1-2 times through and burn what he has. If he has improved, he could find time in the rotation at some point in the season.

Dunning was our best pitcher for a large part of the 2023 regular season when we had several guys out. Would love to see him return to form. I don't think we'll have a formal 6 man rotation but I could see Dunning and Leiter both in the bullpen getting spot starts and long relief to give guys rest and keep innings down.

Rocker in a similar role would also be interesting to keep his innings down but just IMO he starts the year in AAA on a pitch count. Depending on the health and productivity of the starters I could also see him moved to a high leverage reliever role to end the year.

Nice game from the boys today.

Mahle 3 IP, 2H, 0BB, 0 ER
Burger and Walcott bombs

And Church may be a BP arm that's not getting talked about enough. I could see him potentially being this clubs closer by mid-season.

really?

Do we know any details about the surgery? Could it be that it's a fairly routine procedure, and that it went exceptionally well, and that maybe his wife said "I've got this, go back to work"? I doubt very seriously that he would've gone back to ST if there was any risk or danger to his daughter's life. And at the end of the day, and most importantly, NONE of us are in a position to judge or question his (and his family's) decision.

You presented that much better than I was ready to do, so I passed on it. Well said.
