We need about 50 of these about 2 high in a long row. They turn on full blast whenever the opposing team hits a ball in the air to LF or LCF.

Can you imagine the outcry from the Yankees. They'll be screaming for us to open the roof again

Build out a couple rows of seating in the back of that thing. Chance to ride the track if we hit a dinger

Jumping in on the train at DP sounds kinda sketchy.

My guess they put a bunch of frozen looking crystal things in the back of the train and then shoot off something that looks like dry ice

Before yesterday, I would have thought Daikin Park was Chan-Ho Park's nephew who was getting all kinds of offers to come pitch in the US.

The Ice Box is a perfect name for a team that cannot hit at home.

Fill the train with ice cubes or LN2.

While I always root for the Astros, I'd also like a perfect storm where the Rays make the World Series and host a few games inside their new 11,000 seat stadium.
I'm pulling for an Rays-A's playoff matchup in a battle of 11,000 seat stadiums.

My offseason plans:

Plan C
  • Bregman leaves. Make do with Dubon and minor leagues at 3B.
  • Go get the Polar Bear. (7/140 or 5/125)
  • Same in the OF. Cheap LHH

Jolly Olive posted a video of him pricing 1 FA to each team. He had Pete Alonso to Houston.

I kind of like it. Pete will be entering his age 30 season. He's the prototypical slugging 1B. He doesn't play great defense overall, but he can scoop it. He doesn't hit for a ton of average, but he gets on base and hits dingers. Since he became a big leaguer in 2019, he trails only Aaron Judge in HRs. Over the last 4 seasons (take away the 2019 53 HR season), he's still 4th. He won't require any platoon as he hits lefties and righties well. Based on the predictions, he's going to cost less than Bregman and Adames yet bring more on offense than either. So why not?

I was thinking about some left-handed bat option to stick in a corner spot besides bringing back Gamel or Howard.
  • Max Kepler - coming off a bad season he could be very cheap. For most of his career, he's been solid with some flashes of well above average. He's a vet who needs a change of scenery. Here is how he's hit RHP the last few seasons (wRC+) 92, 127, 93, 115, 147, & 119. 111 for his career. On top of that he's a plus defender with a above-average arm.
  • David Peralta - old dude who's going to be cheap. He just hits RHP well. Fairly consistent throughout his career. Defense is starting to go, but you don't need to be elite to play platoon LF at MMP. Veteran bat off the bench because you know Espada loves his pinch hitters.

The only problem with this plan is 3B. How do you navigate without Bregman? Some combination of Dubon, Dezenzo, Matthews (too early IMO), and then you add a body like Moncado or DeJong. The platoon of Singleton, Caratini, Dezenzo, and Dubon wasn't bad at 1B once Abreu was out of the lineup and Singleton wasn't used vs LHP. I feel like we can cheap out way to success at 1B, I don't think we can at 3B tho.

i.e. the Astros need some protection in the back half of the contract

That picture is kind of wild. In case you need a reminder of just how long ago 2000 was.

Enron - Dead
El Paso - Dead (Kinder Morgan)
Randalls - Pretty much dead
Landmark Chevrolet - Dead
Foley's - Dead
AIM Funds - No idea. probably been bought/sold a dozen times since then.
Not sure what the bottom left advertisement is, but probably dead.

Lyondell and Houston Methodist are the only "Local" brands that still exists.

Bottom left ad, the colorful ad on the wall, is for Ruggles when they had a location in the stadium.

You might recall the real fears that we had built Coors Field South and the teams' 40-year history of pitching and defense identity was suddenly out the window. Whole year felt like a jinx:

  • Biggio had only major injury of his career, missed 60 games
  • Jose Lima fell off a cliff so badly that even Jose Abreu was surprised. From 21-10 to 7-16 with a 6.65 ERA. I think Sammy Sosa hit 40 home runs off him that year.
  • Our starting rotation was Chris Holt 8-16, 5.35 ERA; Lima (stats above), Scott Elarton, somehow 17-7 with a 4.81 ERA, Shane Reynolds 7-8, 5.22, and Wade Miller, 6-6, 5.14. Dotel was the closer with 16 save and a 5.40 ERA.
  • 2 days in first place
  • 30 games under on July 21st (33-63)
  • Had to got 32-24 in August/September to avoid 100 losses
  • Hidalgo had an unreal year and then did nothing even close the rest of his career.

2000 was also the year Bagwell scored a remarkable 152 runs in 159 games played

from the 3-hole in the lineup

152 is the most runs scored by a player in MLB since the Great Depression

If this is what they expect to get, there's no way the Astros give it to him (nor should they). Someone may do it, but it'll be a test of whether he was being honest about wanting to win above all else.

The offense was wholly remarkable, although we were still in the steroid era. The whole team had an .837 OPS, #1 in the league.

Bagwell score 295 runs combined in 1999-2000. Three great years of run scoring in two seasons. Incredible.

Moises Alou had one of the best years of all-time for the Astros: 30 HR, 114 RBI, .355 AVG, 1.039 OPS

MItch Melusky looked like our catcher for the next decade: 26 years old with 14 HR, 69 RBI and hit .300

Daryle Ward was 25 and hit 20 HR in 119 games while Berkman was 24 and hit .297 with 21 HR and 67 RBi in 114 games.

Julio Lugo was an out-of-nowhere rookie who hit .283 and stole 22 bases

And my low-key favorite Astro Billy Spiers hit .301 at age 34 as a super sub.

No one is going to do that just like no one was ever going to give Beli or Snell a deal like that. This is a negotiating tactic.

Agreed but it cost Snell some cash (even moreso for Montgomery) because teams laughed them out of the building and they held out false hope til the bitter end.
