There is a formula to be sure. I believe it has something to do with the present day value of the contract, but I could be totally wrong. When Ohtani signed his contract they explained it on MLB

You discount the deferred payments to present value using some rate (Treasury?). Dodgers got lucky because the rate was much higher than it's been recently.

If bregman wants 7 years you absolutely let him walk. The last 3 years of that deal would be crippling.

I'd give him 7. He'd be 37/38 when the contract is done and I think a move to second would benefit him in those late years. His plate discipline will always be there

Plus, if you think about it, in about five years or more 26 or $27 million will not be as much as it is in today's baseball. It'll be more to the equivalent of what 20M is now

But his plate discipline wasn't there this last year.

1 year out of 8 full seasons is an anomaly. So I'd imagine it comes back next year
In his 20's, maybe. I'm not counting on it now. And if you thought the early season starts were bad before, wait until you get financially uninspired Bregman.

Bold prediction: "Financially Uninspired Breggy" is the spring 2025 gallows humor username.

The waiting for Bregman will (if it hasn't already) cripple our chance to makes moves on other players.

"Enhance" offer

Really shocked Kim isn't on the list of backup options, especially with some of the trash that is listed.

Breggy is my all time favorite Astro, but hell no on $210M.

8 years 200 M with a mutual option for year 8 and opt out after year 4 would be the highest I'd go for length and amount

If the Astros lose Alex Bregman in free agency, you can be assured that Phillies president Dave Dombrowski will be immediately on the phone offering Bohm for Astros reliever Ryan Pressly who's being extensively shopped.

If the Phillies will do something that stupid we should have already moved on from Bregman.

Could even play Bohm at 1B if you ultimately sign Bregman.

It's sad that I don't trust Astros leadership to make the right decisions anymore.

I'm not sure when the time to make a decision is, but the Astros need to be proactive. Do not let Boras manipulate you against the field. Give your best offer, then pivot if others are willing to sign. The worst thing is to be held hostage and left holding an empty bag.

But, I hate playing poker and am not good at it. I'd rather light $1,000 on fire and get it over with, lol. Definitely not a job for me.
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

The problem now is that the last good third base option on the market is Alex. The are no others now that adames is signed. That time has passed already I'm afraid.

Well, the Astros weren't giving out that contract, anyway, so it might be moot.

Kim could be a 3B as well but if you can get Bohm for Pressly that deal should have been done yesterday.

I'll give Alex that contract if he averages over an 800 ops over the course of his contract, if not it reverses to one less year and $156M

If this is true, we should have pulled the trigger yesterday. That takes off two needs with one move. Bregs is not coming back. He is not worth $200M, but Boras (and others, I'm sure) are in his ear trying to convince him he is. Let someone else overpay. We have more needs to fill to become more competitive.

Why do so many have such strong opinions about him
Not coming back even after Houston made a big offer, confidence from Dana, Espada, etc, and no one else offering him yet? It feels completely different than Springer or Correa offseasons.

Let another team pay him the $210 AND lose draft pick. I'm good with it especially if we can get Bohm

What was the knock on Bohm from the Phillies camp? Something like bad attitude, is that accurate?

1. We don't know if he has other offers yet. I'd assume so, even if they haven't been shared publicly yet.

2. My post directly above your assumes that they are $50M apart from the (more than) fair offer we gave at $156M.

Bohm would be paid like a slightly above average guy, and we would not be asking him to carry the team. And let's not kid ourselves, outside of 2019, Bregman hasn't carried us alone outside of MAYBE a week or two in August. The only thing that worries me about Bohm is the shaky defense, at times.
MaxPower

I've heard "maturity issues". Make of that what you will but seems mainly like a guy I don't want to give a guaranteed long term deal to or expect to lead my team.
W

maybe Bohm is the answer at 3rd base for the next 2 years

but one small issue...

40 walks in 606 plate appearances last year...yikes

so in one area...he'll fit right in
