I still say Yankee stadium is not going to be kind to Bregman. Per Savant he'd have 57 fewer HRs in Yankee if he played every game there. 16 fewer over the last 3 seasons. His xwOBA was as low as it's ever been in his career minus the partial 2016 season. The combination of age and ballpark is going to put Breggy in a world of hurt. I want him back, but I still think the Astros offer is fair. I'm with Crane on this one.
I was looking at that before I read this.

Bregman is literally playing in the best park he could play in for his swing. He's optimized for the Crawford Boxes. If we can see this, you know the other teams know this. That makes all this dancing even more strange. Why would anyone pay him more money to be less effective? And in some parks way less effective.

Same with Paredes. Cubs were dumb trading for him.

I wish Breggy would make his decision and sign with someone, whether its with us or someone else. I feel this is a major reason why the Astros haven't made any big moves yet. If/when he signs with another team, I think there will be trade activity in short order to reset the roster.

Could it be a chicken and egg situation? He wants to know what the plan is with Tucker and Framber?

The fact that he hasn't signed yet tells me nobody has offered him the full amount he's looking for.

Correct. Breggy has to know that we aren't re-signing Tucker.

I think we need to move Tucker before Bregman makes his decision. Astros bargaining power weakens once Bregman is gone.

As much as I hate when our players leave it is always funny to watch fans do gymnastics to try and say why they can cheer them now after hating them for so long. MN and Toronto was funny, but watching the NYY try to wiggle into cheering for Breggy will be next level

I always loved George Springer, even as a Jay. I will love Bregman no matter where he goes, Tucker was always just kind of boring and seemed a lot like Gerrit Cole. A mercenary without a lot of personality. I won't miss Tucker when he's gone.

Ain't no one in NY buying Breggy Bomb salsa. And HEB sales would tank.

I agree, it will be hard to see Bregman in pinstripes but I can't hate the guy. He's an Astros legend.

Tucker I feel mixed about, I wish he would stay but he has never seemed as engaged with the fanbase.

I'm a Bregman fan. He has been a leader for the club for years, and I can't be upset that he is chasing money. Go get it while you can, young man!

That being said, if he ends up in pinstripes, I will boo him mercilessly. The Yankees have been our rivals through this whole run, and he'd be joining the enemy. If he goes to the Dodgers -- I'd also boo like crazy. Going to either of those teams would seem like a big F-you to the Astros and Astros fans who have supported him for years. After his career is over and he comes back to celebrate Astros championship teams, I'd applaud him again.

Other clubs are more palatable. I think that's what made George and Carlos leaving ok. They went to the Jays and Twins respectively. If Alex went to say the Reds or Cubs, he would be applauded when he comes back to play.

If you're going to encourage someone to go get his money, and in the same breath boo him when the team offering the most money is an enemy, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. One can boo the likes of Aaron Judge and politely applaud Bregman for all he's done.

I absolutely love the Yankees, because they spend crap loads of money and until last year have absolutely nothing to show for it.

If Alex Bregman goes to the Yankees it is because they believe he is worth market value and the Astros don't.

You can boo if you want, but maybe you should boo Jim Crane. I know you won't be alone.

Bregman has given everything to the team and city for a long time and brought us countless memories and a couple trophies. I think booing him is horse s***.

I liked it. Very New Mexico style vs what we normally see around here. They rebranded tho.

Eh, works both ways.

Let me be clear, I don't fault Bregman for going to the Yankees if they offer the most money. But....in doing so, he's putting aside all the crap thrown at him and his teammates by their fans (and even players) over the last several years. Which is fine. He can do that.

But if he can do that then I can also put aside the achievements he made here and boo him. I won't, I don't boo any players like that, it's silly, but I won't root for him even in the slightest.

For top tier free agents, there is no market value. It's however much a billionaire wants to pay for his newest toy.

The biggest thing about Bregman is if he's worth the contract he'll get. He had a very rough offensive year. Not great timing for that. The most concerning thing to me is that his walk rate seemed to plummet.

I think a long deal for him will be painful especially at the end barring a major change.

Not for me.

In no partial order: Wynn, Cesar Cedeno, Bidge, B****, Berkman, Altuve, Springer, JRR, Ryan, JV, Cruz.

Bregman would be lumped with Dierker, Correa, Thon, Yordan (who will move into the top list at some point), Scott, Roy O and probably a half dozen others.

It's already been mentioned but man those Yankee a-holes are not gonna be as kind to him on those slow starts.

That's gonna be rough.

Was thinking the same about Tucker. How much of his lollygagging will the right field bleacher creatures at Yankee stadium put up with before they put him on blast?

They dealt with Soto who is far worse defensively so who knows? Tucker is a better fit for them than Bregman.

I think the adage that if you pay market value for a free agent you'll come in 3rd of 4th is accurate. The free agent market is all about paying over market value to keep talent away from rivals and hopefully get that last piece to make a short term run at the long term expense.
tylhair
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Maybe "market value" wasn't the right term.

I believe that the astros should not pay Alex Bregman.

I believe the Astros are best positioned to beef up the roster for the 2025 2026 2027 2028 window while we have Yordan's team friendly contract, Hunter Brown, Bryan Abreu, Yanier Diaz, Jeremy Pena, Josh Hader, Cristian Javier, and Jose Altuve together.

By 2029, barring some amazing unexpected prospect development, the Astros should be looking to rebuild a new core. Having old man Alex Bregman occupy a large section on the books for 2029 2030 2031 would really complicate things and his trade value will likely be minor.

I believe it is savvy not to pay Bregman. He would likely prefer to play in Houston. Tough decisions are being made and the Yankees may be the team to make him an offer he can't refuse.

I will hate to see him boo'd even by a portion of the crowd at Daikin.
