Should've kept KUCHI and dealt Framber, imo

What if Crane says eff it and signs Alonso or Walker and then Santander or Teoscar?

His reluctance in free agency seems to be with 6+ year commitments.

Dude got a steal with the Yordan extension

Made the right call with Springer as much as that sucked

Same with Correa

Crane isn't afraid to carry a big payroll and he wants to win

Arenado a head scratcher, I guess the appeal is proven defensive commodity and cheaper net cost with STL sending $ back.

I think my worst fear for the Astros is they are morphing into the post-Jimmy Johnson Cowboys or the post-2 titles Rockets, both of the same era.

The Cowboys' comparison fits a bit better because they won with Jimmy, got rid of him, then managed to win one more before starting the slow downward spiral towards mediocrity. Since 1995, they've had several really good regular seasons but are 5-13 in the playoffs. The one consistent through all that is Jerrah.

The Rockets won their two titles in 94/95, then got waxed by Seattle and started this long cycle of "let's go add this hired gun" mentality that went through at least 2 different incarnations. First you had Dream / Clyde with Barkley, then you had Dream / Barkley / Pippen. Later on you had Harden and Jeremy LIn, then Harden and Dwight Howard, then Harden and Chris Paul, with no Finals returns.

Now granted, Crane had to let go of Luhnow / Hinch after '19, but it sort of feels like '22 might have been the last gasp of what those guys built, and now the Astros are sliding towards the "let's add this guy to win another title" concept instead of what got them to the top of the moutain in the first place.

Good comparisons. Those late 90's Rockets teams were the frustrating ones. Are we still paying Matt Maloney? They were caught in that mediocrity where you barely make the playoffs thus never landing in the lottery to get a chance at a superstar.

Ugh. It DOES kinda feel like that. And this better not be true, because I can't handle ANOTHER favorite team sliding into the ****ter like the Cowboys and Aggie football have.

I drink enough as it is.

Here is why I wouldn't count on it being Alonso. I feel like he is probably going back to the Mets unless someone blows an offer of the water. Would the Astros make such an offer? An offer that so big that Cohen won't match for one of the Mets homegrown players? I doubt it, but you never know.

The Mets offered him a 7/158 extension last year, which obviously was rejected. With your apparent financial limitations, are you interested in locking up that kind of cash for a declining player?

Sounds weird, but IF (big if) we are going to give out a big contract, I think I'd rather put the money into Alonso than Bregman. At least now that we've (somewhat) addressed 3B next year (Paredes) and future (Smith). First base has been a hole for a while and Alonso would fill that hole.

However, I would rather go the route of using the money for OF help and next year rolling with a combo of Big Jon, Caratini, Dezenzo and Diaz at 1B.

Matt Maloney only had the worst contract ever until they gave Kelvin Cato a $7 year $42 million contract for getting a triple double in pre-season.

The year before you and I sort of met, I worked at Rice in the SID Department. Rice played Penn (Maloney's alma mater) and he came to the game, sat at the scorer's table so nobody would "bother him" and then hit on and successfully asked out our knockout freshman intern.

After he walked away, one of my coworkers said, "He can't hit **** in a game, but he scores with Casey in 10 minutes."

If we want Goldy or Santana then we might wan to move quickly.

The Yankees need to move 2-3 moves (1B, 2B or 3B, and RP) and don't have the money after the Friend & Bellinger deals. Stroman is going to have to go out.

Can somebody tell me why we're not looking at Goldschmidt for a short-term contract?

Look at his stats from last year. That'll answer your question.

Short term meaning a year? I'd be good with that but I can guarantee he wants more. And the Yankees will probably offer it to him if they can't get Walker.

I don't think the Yankees can afford Walker and address their other needs.

Still way, way better than anything we've got for 1B at the moment.

True

But that shouldn't justify overpaying for an aging/declining player.

Yeah, I'm not saying we should overpay just that he's far better than what we've got and can be a placeholder for a year. However, I do recognize that he's got to be agreeable to it and might want a lot more than he's worth at this point in his career.

Yeah but how is his batflip. Probably doesn't come close in the most important metric.

One thing is for sure, if they aren't making at least one more big move there is 0 point in keeping Framber. This team as is will be a bad offense.

We need to recalibrate our thinking about 1B. After Abreu was fired, we got above-league-average play at 1B while rotating through many options and playing Singleton in unfavorable platoon matchups too often. Goldy's 2024 play would be a downgrade. Santana's 2020 thru 2023 play would be a downgrade. He had a magical age 38 season, which I would guess is not repeatable. If we're not getting Polar Bear or Walker, then I think we're fine at 1B. We need to upgrade OF.

Ding ding ding…this right here. Need 2 corner OF bats big time.

I agree if you are only making one move then OF is the move to make. I'd add to your list that I feel better about Dezenzo taking a step forward (at the very least it's worth finding out) as compared to Dubon becoming more than a slappy hitter.

Yep, the Singleton disrespect is unwarranted. He contributes above average output at 1B as long as you platoon him correctly. If anything, we need to se eif we can find a cheap lefty thumper 1B/OF to platoon with him off the bench.

I would much rather get one mega OF bat and one modest upgrade OF bat than spend at 1B.

This! Unless we can upgrade big at 1B (Walker, Alonso), it makes no sense spending money on anything but OF and bullpen.

Singleton is a butcher at 1B and is just ok against righties so let's not get too crazy. He goes in the category of "not our biggest problem at the moment".

Can't we just platoon Diaz and Caratini at 1B and catcher? I relalize that's asking them to both play 150+ games a year, but both feel like better hitters then the guys whose names keep coming up.

Diaz can freaking hit. Shouldn't we move him to 1B and extend his career 3 years?

1. Altuve 2B
2. Profar LF
3. Yordan DH
4. Santander RF
5. Diaz C
6. Paredes
7. Singleton/Dezenzo/Caratini 1B
8. Pena
9. Chas/Myers/Dubon CF

I could ride with that.

124 wRC+ vs RHP puts him ahead of Walker, Cronenworth, Busch, Arraez, Alonso, Burger, Lowe, Wade, Yandy, Bell, and Pasquaintino vs RHP.

If we can find a more versatile option, I would be down.

The lack of depth in that lineup is scary. If one of Altuve or Yordan is down for some time we've got major problems.
