This is kind of what I was thinking. The Sox pen isn't weak but due for some regression. I could see them asking for Paredes and Abreu for Duran and we say you need to expand it to include Bello and we will add prospects. I'd prefer to trade someone other than Frey but think that's the kind of deal you could make. Maybe that frees up Arrighetti as trade bait for another deal.

What do we do with the already depleted bullpen at that point?

Zero chance Boston does that deal tho.

I wouldn't do that deal either. Abreu is worth more than that trade values him.

How could he have prevented the spending?

He approved the deferred money for Ohtani. He should have ruled that it still counts against the salary cap. The integrity of the cap is now completely lost. Pretty sure that was never the intent when it was established.
He lost me when he didn't release the full report on the cheating. He covered for the bluebloods and hung the Astros out to dry, alone. He might be a bigger s...head in my book than Bud Adams

How could have done that? These owners aren't stupid. They have lawyers.

How does a commissioner stop what they are doing? What rule are they breaking? It sucks what they are doing and it's not really in the spirit of things, but they aren't doing anything illegal.

Commissioner works for the owners. He starts trying to punish owners for not breaking any rules, that guy is gone.

The deferrals that stated with Ohtani do not seem to be in good faith. I have to imagine a better commissioner would have worked on that immediately.

It is absolutely a thing not done in the spirt of the rule, but how can he do it when it's a part of the CBA? How can he stop them when it isn't illegal or a violation of the CBA?

We better not trade Abreu

Curious as to why other teams didn't defer to avoid the luxury tax. It's certainly not a new idea ( Bonilla ), but this abuse of it is not in the best interest of baseball. Is that not what he can act on ?

Bryan Abreu is a free agent after this year. He's also great but Stressful…..

I'm not against trading him for a good haul

We can't get rid of Abreu with Hader being a question mark

Recent reports have indicated Hader is fine. I don't think he's a question mark. Obviously that could change throughout the season. It's a risk. With our rotation depth, I think that could overflow to the bullpen and keep us in fairly good shape.

The commissioner still has latitude to rescind trades and contracts, no?

That isn't a good haul for him. Giving up Paredes and Abreu and two of our top prospects should get us more than that.

I think it's a decent haul. I would seriously consider that trade even though I realize it would probably be a step back for us offensively for 2 years, and obviously hurts our bullpen for 1 year.

You get rid of Paredes (2 years) + Abreu (1 year) and potentially get Duran (3 years) and Bello (4 years with a 5th year club option). I'm not really as high on Duran as others, yes you get extra year and intangibles, but the guy strikes out a ton and doesnt have a lot of power.

Bello had a pretty decent 2025, but I guess the issue is whether he can continue improving. He's not an ace or a stud, but he's a decent 4 or 5 and gives you insurance.

I'm not sure if our Pitching lab could help him too, but they usually have a great eye for these things.

So for 2026 the trade is kinda meh, but you may actually like it longer term. Honestly though I would like a more potent bat if I'm giving up Paredes. There's so many good things he does to our lineup that someone like Duran just doesn't do.

We have plenty of guys who can fill the 4-5 slot in the rotation and be "pretty decent". Abreu has been a plus setup guy for several years now and could be a closer for many teams. As was shown previously, Paredes is pretty much equal to Duran except for maybe slight less power. So we would trade Paredes for somebody who is roughly his equal and an extra year of control, and a consistently plus leverage reliever (Abreu) and two of our best prospects for something we already have plenty of ("decent" 4-5 slot guys). Seems like a huge overpay on our side. Given where we are with starters, I value Abreu higher than Bello, making the addition of two prospects on our side of the deal gratuitous..

Come on Dodgers. Do it. Sign or trade for a complete all star team with a salary of $700MM. You can do it. Blow this mother up.

I wonder if this will effect ticket sales for other teams. Probably not dramatically but I'd bet it's not 0.

I don't dislike the idea of trading abreu in a vacuum but don't we have to get another reliever from somewhere? Joe pitches him almost every game. Who are those innings going to go to?

Unfortunately, I think it does the opposite of that. I'm pretty sure last year teams saw a massive attendance spike when the dodgers visited

The Dodgers don't really need another starter so I'd be interested in what that trade would look like, especially with the Brewers trying to win. Maybe then send Sasaki back?

The Brewers are not the team that's going to take on money. They are cheap and want prospects.

No, no, $99m deferred to 1931 because they also have developed time travel.

I think in the 80s, the Astros fired at least one manager during an Oilers MNF game so there wouldn't be a lot of media attention.

At this point the Doyers are just signing people to keep them from going to a competitor. Like t.u. did in football in the 50's before scholarship limits and when they could pay under the table without getting in trouble for it.
