Boston wanted too much for him.

They want a lot for Abreu as well.

Boston is trying so hard to win the deal, they're going to screw themselves and end up overpaying for Matt Shaw.

I will say I don't think it's completely dead.

Geez, I think Paredes for Abreu is a slight overpay by us, but worth it because of Paredes injury and the fact a left handed bat elevates our entire lineup if it forces teams to pitch more lefties against us.

That's also 4 years with 1 being league min vs 2 years.

I'll pass on losing any deal for Paredes with the bums from Beantown.

I'm very confident a Parades for Abreu swap would be a win in the long term for Houston.

Yeah, I'm not eating 12,500,000 of Hicks' salary (even if he is a fellow Cypress boy), and I'm not giving up Sousa.

Here's the thing about those 2 years being left for a Paredes before he hits FA. It very well may be 1 year. I don't think there is a chance in hell you get a full 2027. And you may get no 2027 at all.

Here is what I am thinking.

Paredes + top 5 prospect

for

Duran or Abreu + Hicks (we take on his $)

This gets us our left-handed bat, clears out the corner INF logjam, and gives us a piece to add to the bullpen with a high ceiling.

Looks like someone already considered Hicks the piece needed to make this work.

We have Hader, King, and Okert. They're all left-handed and, arguably, ahead of Sousa in the bullpen pecking order. Hicks, while overpaid, could be crucial for the bullpen. A right-handed flamethrower who can handle high leverage.

Hicks has only had a few good years in his entire career. Most of them nearly a decade ago.

Hard no.

Are you thinking of Liam Hicks? Because we're talking about Jordan Hicks. He wasn't even in the league a decade ago. In 2023, he was one of the best relievers in baseball. The Giants tried to turn him into a starter. I think the Astros lab would be able to make it work.

Shows he played in 2018 and 2019, but may have been ML stats.

His only good recent season is 2023. The rest of his record is awful. I don't think we should assume the Astros Lab can turn every player around.

If the Astros are targeting a pitcher, there's a reason. They're very intentional about the arms they go after.

That said - I haven't heard much about Hicks on my end.

Things are kinda frozen right now. Boston is asking for a lot for both Abreu and Duran. Very possible they come down eventually, but right now the Astros don't want to send what Boston wants for those guys.

If a deal ends up getting done, it's very likely going to involve Abreu. I don't see a Duran trade happening right now.

I'm not opposed to bringing Wilyer back for the right deal. Lord knows we could've used him last year.

Boston probably feels the same way, which is why they are something above and beyond Paredes in the deal.

I absolutely would be good with this, and that's coming from somebody who has been hesitant to give up Paredes for Duran.

The issue is with the term "long term"

Of course Abreu likely generates more collective value due to his years of control.

The issue is that he very likely makes us significantly worse the next two years when we're trying to compete and have a starting lineup that's fairly lacking in overall power already even with Paredes.

Significantly worse is a bit of a stretch considering Wilyer has posted a higher WAR than Isaac each of the last two seasons.

Abreu has more power than Paredes.

No.

Abreu has two seasons with over 300 ABs and has a smaller OPS+, less homers, lower OPS and that's before accounting for Paredes' strengths at pulling the ball in Daikin and working counts. Paredes would have had over
30 HRs if healthy last year

Due to defense, not offense. With Cam Smith and Meyers in the OF, defense isn't an area we need to materially improve

23-25 SLG
Abreu .465
Paredes .443

And this is with Paredes playing in very friendly RHH HR parks while Abreu played in a difficult LHH HR park.

Exit Velo / EV90 / Max EV 23-25
Abreu 91.2 / 106.7 / 114.4
Paredes 86.3 / 201.3 / 107.7

Not even close there.

Paredes is a really good player. I know that. But you seem to have built him up to something more than he is.

If we trade for Hicks, they need to take McCullers.
