guys arrive at spring training not prepared or not planning (or frankly not wanting) to play 150 games

they think 140 or 130 or even 120 meets their obligation to the team

If you look at his 2021 season after he came back from injury, he was all over the place the first half of the season. Then the rust was knocked off and he carried the team through the series with the CWS.

How the hell do you know he didn't tell the org he was willing to do all of that and they told him no?

You're questioning a guy's desire and work ethic without all of the information just because it didn't work out and he didn't force himself into the bullpen.

To even hint at putting him in the category of Rendon is bull**** thing to do.

Let me be clear, I don't think he's Rendon but I also don't think he's doing whatever he can to be the best teammate. That is how I interpret his comments last spring about not being a reliever. Whenever a guy coming off missing that much time wants to do it "his way" rather than simply be willing and prepared to do whatever is asked then I do question their overall commitment to the game and to their team. They lost whatever privilege they may have earned to say "I'm a starter". Everyone gave Devers **** last year for saying I play 3rd but he has done a hell of a late more for Boston the last 3 seasons than Lance has done for the Astros. Is he a full on paycheck collector like Rendon? No but his comments strike me as "You owe me $17M a year regardless so I'm gonna do whatever I want to do and y'all can stfu".

You can have a different opinion of what his comments means and that's fine but it won't change my opinion. I will leave it at that.

Didn't he move to the bullpen in Aug? Didn't we need him as a starter last season? Look at the guys we turned to. Seems like weird take to be mad he wanted to stay a starter when we needed starters. Then mad he didn't switch to the bullpen when he goes to the bullpen.

It's about preparation in the offseason. He went into the season presuming he would be a starter and put no thought or preparation into any other role. Yes he eventually went to the pen (completely unprepared and after crashing and burning repeatedly as a starter) but the question remains, could he have been more successful there had he prepared himself to do so? We won't know but we do know he wasn't willing to entertain the idea in his offseason training.

I'm not going to fault Lance for not trying to be something he's not. He's paid like a starter, and was a starter through his career. He provides more value IF he is a starter. He's trying to get back there and I think the preparation to get there is even higher, just different. You can't really juggle two different things at once very well coming off injury

Let's follow this logic. He trains to be a reliever. Hes available to pitch in May out of the bullpen. By the time May is finished Gordan, Gusto, and Walter had gotten starts. So it's clearly a position of need due to injury. Yet our bullpen was full of guys like Hader, Abreu, King, Sousa, & Okert. Taylor and Montero were gone either before or during May.

Maybe McCullers is able to help by being better than the 5th or 6th guy out of the pen.

Are the O's bidding against themselves at this point? I guess the Giants could be in play, but I doubt Posey (who played catcher) wants a head case that purposefully drilled his battery mate.

Listening to Talkin Baseball and they brought up Gore's 2nd half. I didn't realize how bad it is.

From June 20th (15 games)
  • 5.72 ERA
  • 4.89 FIP
  • 8.21 K/9 (down from 12.26 to start the year)
Also, this happened in July

Altuve's skipping the WBC is indeed good news

Astros need their best players playing 150 minimum this year

any WBC participants may not be able to do that

Maybe he had sleep apnea and only used his machine for one year? Or perhaps he was locked in a hotel and just did a bunch of push ups and ate chicken and rice?

Plus, it supplies some good cues to remind both boys, especially my older one who gets a decent amount of time at first base. "Catch it with your face" and "you ain't that cute" are on heavy repeat around here when working fundamentals.
