The WBC is a cool idea. But the ML teams should put a stop to it. Letting your expensive player play and get hurt ain't good for baseball.

Wholeheartedly disagree. Letting your best players play is great for baseball.

NHL didn't let their guys play Olympic hockey and it sucked.

The bump their league is currently getting is huge from changing their mind and letting their stars play.

Baseball still needs to attract new fans.

Injury is a risk for all of these guys in the offseason.

I'm going to enjoy the hell out of watching the US stars destroy pool play.

There is a reason some of the best can't get insurance to cover their contracts in the event of injury.

I get it. It sounds cool to have a world all star tourney.

The minute a superstar goes out long term because of this, it ends. Teams have too much invested in players to watch them get hurt in games for fun.

With baseball in the next summer Olympics there's absolutely no reason to have this thing anymore.

I agree the WBC is stupid, but mainly for pitchers IMO. He easily could have had a bad hop fielding a grounder in Astros camp.

Baseball in the Olympics is stupid.

Move the WBC to summer and take 3 weeks off.

Four Nations Hockey tournament was awesome.

Kind of a not my problem situation.

I wonder what insurance payout Crane got for Yordan last year.

When you have team payrolls for any contender not named the Dodgers creeping up on a quarter of a billion dollars a year and you are asking fans to shell out $50+ to have a burger and a margarita at the park on top of ticket prices that are becoming exorbitant, and you are keeping the games off of all of the major networks and only available through a single channel streaming fee, you are not doing what you can to maximize new fans. And having one or more of the key players who are pulling down that payroll go out and get injured in games that don't matter and they miss a decent chunk of the regular season because of it, you are not helping drive fan interest. I personally don't think the WBC does anything to drive new fans to MLB. It is mostly a niche competition watched by people who are already hardcore fans.

Oh I agree MLB is doing things to hurt its fans going to games

2023 WBC was pretty darn successful by MLB standards and increases from 2017 were more than just hardcore fans.

I'd be down for this.

On WBC seasons, start season 2 weeks earlier and end it 2 weeks later. 2-3 weeks for WBC in middle of season

What would 2 weeks earlier and 2 weeks later do to the schedule given weather? The schedule is already dumb. The Angels open in Houston, Rangers in Philadelphia and Diamondbacks in Los Angeles. It makes sense to me that the Angels, Rangers and Diamondbacks should all host northern teams in late March.

I actually think it would be pretty cool to have opening day during spring break. More parens and kids could go.

And it would only be for one year out of three… Or you can make the world baseball classic once every four years like the World Cup (I think it should be every 4 years anyways)

Start on the last friday of spring break (march 13 this year) and end on Sunday October 11

There's bad weather opening weekend sometimes anyways in the northern states… So to me it doesn't really change anything moving it up by 10 days or so

Just seems like it would further complicate scheduling for a sports that doesn't seem to do a good job of it early at least. Thanksgiving WS or maybe later if you have northern teams. Might have to consider neutral site WS those years.
Ag_07

I like the idea of a 2-3 week break in the middle of the season for the WBC and reduce the number of regular season games so the WS doesn't go into December.

But that doesn't solve the injury problem.
Mathguy64

There is a negative % chance of reducing the number of games. No way in hell are the owners giving up game ticket, media and general concession income.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I love the WBC despite the injury risks. Baseball needs to expand its reach around the world, and the tournament helps achieve that. Plus, the way the Latin countries rally around their teams is really amazing. This means A LOT to those players and fans. As for schedule, I don't see how else it really fits anywhere else. Maybe taking two weeks off could help, but then you have a ton of players just sitting around out of their routines. Maybe you could do away with the all star game on WBC years, but that's still 2.5 weeks where players sit.

Pushing things back doesn't work. They don't want to compete with the NFL anymore than they have to and neutral site is garbage.

The only potential option is moving baseball season up and you just don't let northern teams without a roof have home games before April.

Correct. There is more chance the NBA will reduce number of games and that % is probably negative 100%.

The fundamental problem with the WBC is that guys suddenly want to go full tilt during a point in their year when they are taking things slow and rounding into shape.

The Pena injury is just a fluke thing that could have happened while fielding ground balls during the offseason.

I get the injury concerns regarding the WBC - but this one was just one of those things. Fortunately it's very minor.. at least that's the word right now.

Good point

I'd be cool if they got real creative and made hosting WBC games contingent on having your payroll in a certain slot.

All WBC games hosted at ML parks and if you spend over or under a certain slot you don't get to host games.

Something to make getting WBC games to offset the loss of less regular season games that's tied to a competitive balance indicator.

I love the WBC also and am excited to go next week.

I just think you could make it a summer thing and people smarter than us can figure out how to make it happen (this would also allow for more stadiums to be in the rotation like Wrigley, Fenway, etc)

How long do you want to ignore this user?

Explain that to the idiots that run baseball. The Angels and Diamondbacks both open on the road. They open at Houston and LA. So 4 teams with about 99.8% of no issues play each other while it's likely games get postponed up north.
