I think it's safe to say that probably isn't happening at this point

going deeper into the matter...

there were non-roiders who despised the roiders (of the steroid era)

but they couldn't say much about it when they were playing

from the late/not so great 00s Stros, Wandy was always one of the best shots we had at winning any particular game

All Dana does is leak and talk.

Old Astros regimes made moves nobody was talking about. Out if nowhere to us. Dana leaks and talks- everyone knows what he is trying to get done, but he doesn't know how to execute without Crane forcing it through with money.

It has way more to do with lack of assets than anything else.

maybe, but he definitely does talk a lot. It makes him look stupid, whether it's ultimately his fault or not.

Then I guess we know the answer to that. We need to build up the farm system.

Of course everybody wants to win, but I think we are not being honest with ourselves (read: internally the Astros) about what we can accomplish.

If only we had a GM who was supposed to be an expert scout whose big selling point was evaluating minor league talent who could have been fixing this the last two years... Oh well

Imai on line 1. No one saw that coming.

Dana strikes me as one of those GMs that drafts a WR with his #1 draft pick, even though the team already has a stacked WR corps because "he was the best available when our pick came up". But then fails to address the glaring deficiencies on the OL and DL until the 5th and 6th rounds. Imai was certainly a good get and will hopefully be successful enough to make us not miss Framber too much (shouldn't be hard). But Dana whiffed on the rest of his list of high priority needs in the offseason, namely adding some power and a LHH or two to the lineup. So yeah, we got a few good pitchers who will hopefully help. But overall, I would give his offseason a D- because he didn't address the glaring needs that held us back from success in the 2nd half of the season.

I could be way off, but I think the drive to keep the window open is keeping Dana from exercising his strength. It is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to keep an aging boat afloat with little capital. Crane either needs to break the bank or hit the reset, because straddling the fence might fill enough seats and sell sufficient beer to stay in the black, but it is not a path to a title. Dana's known for building a team through the draft and talent identification, but he's doing that with one hand tied behind his back. Just my opinion.

Does MLB allow teams to trade draft picks, or are they stuck with the normal plus compensation from QO and stuff?

Trading Tucker was a smart move, but we still don't have a ton of prospects over the last 5 years

Not allowed except for the competitive balance picks.

This is the first year in a long time where we are positioned to have a decent draft due to the PPI (between 1st and 2nd) and Comp (After the 4th). Thank you, Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez.

MLB draft is different from NFL or NBA. You are years away from them making your team, which could be drastically different. It's much more of a BPA scenario, especially with a much lower hit rate. It's also much easier to trade prospects in MLB.

As has been stated, we have minimal trade capital. Paredes is the best option on the bench g league team but I suspect we valued him more than other clubs because of how well he fits our park. What few good prospects we have I doubt Dana wants to trade.

Dana's problem is his mouth but that doesn't mean he's stupid. The only bad move made under his tenure is one he had little input on (CW).

Yeah, I know there are big differences. Virtually nobody in the MLB draft is going to start for the big league club in their first year, so there is less of a direct pipeline to fill immediate needs. I was just using it as an example of grading offseason moves versus actual needs and while he got some decent arms, I don't think he did a very good job addressing our other pressing needs. For sure the lake of trade capital is a key factor, but I still think with the interest we had in Paredes, we should have been able to get something done.

Maybe. It doesn't appear we could get Abreu or Duran from the Red Sox and the only other interested party we know of was the Pirates and I don't see any appealing players there we could have gotten.

If we are comparing to the NFL, he's like a new GM on a team with a lot of bad contracts up against the cap. Maybe that team has two all pro WR but a terrible defense. You can nitpick which low salary target he should have gone after but realistically his options are very limited. You can only trade those WR to a willing team and likely eat some salary as well.
