Then I'd consider either of the following:

- Venture X / Savor
Venture X is a no-fuss premium travel card with 2x base earning and it pairs well with their Savor card for frequent diners. Points from both can be combined. Good for travel-centric redemptions.

- Chase Sapphire Preferred / Freedom Unlimited
The CSP gets 3x on dining and unlocks point transfers to United. The Freedom Unlimited also has 3x dining, but more importantly it has 1.5x base spend on everything else. Again, points from both can be combined. Optimized for travel-centric redemptions, but still get 1:1 base value for cash back.

Just got my new Hilton Aspire in the mail. That makes one each for me and for my wife. The annual fees are high, but having two makes the fee night certificate make more sense. Most people don't sta somewhere just one night, and now we can stay somewhere nicer without having to foot the bill in cash or points for the second night.

As with most high fee cards, though, I don't expect these to be forever cards.

This paired with exec platinum status and you're rolling in miles. I fly a few times a month and I regularly earn 10k on that flight when pairing it with the card bonus (4x) and the 120% status bonus.

Look at Amex blue

6% on groceries 3% on gas 1% everything else

We use it for groceries and gas exclusively. Mastercard AA exec card for everything else.

SWA visa for Costco.

Lots of folks suggesting Amex Blue, and leaving out that the 6% on groceries is ONLY for the frist 6k in groceries.

And that is pretty easy to hit these days.So plan to have a back up grocery card. Capital One Savor is a good option that is 3% on groceries and restaurants.

It also has 3% on toll roads which add up very quick in many parts of Texas.

Really? Didn't know that. Does that count as "transportation" costs like gas stations?

That's fair. We hit our cap in like August last year then just moved to an airline card.

We like to travel and now that it's family of 4, free flights makes stomaching the ridiculous cost of travel easier.

My Savor is 4% on restaurants but maybe they changed for newer folks.

Edit: found it.

Probably my favorite card; we just booked a stay with FNAs at the Waldorf Astoria in Cabo over MLK weekend that has 250K pts/nt standard rates (have to use FNAs on standard rates) and starts at over $2K/nt that weekend. You also get $200 every six months to spend on resort stays and $50 every quarter for airlines to help offset the AF.

The Diamond status the card gives you still has some teeth for upgrades, lounges and breakfasts, especially internationally.

Im looking at a Hilton all-inclusive in Punta Cana over Christmas break. We've got 3 FNAs now (or at least we will when these SUBs register). It's not $2k per night, but still in the $800-1000 range for that time of year. I like the idea of a 100% free mini vacation (minus the tax on the flights).

Edit: I just learned that this all inclusive qualifies as a Hilton Aspire resort so we'll also get $400 in credits for paying with both cards. The whole idea is a Christmas gift for my wife and now we can throw in a spa treatment. I'm going to be a hero!
