I'm not a Rory fan (also not a hater) but I respect what he has accomplished and don't understand these pot shots at him. I do wish I could drive the ball like him once in my life.

this. this is why I root against Rory. I don't dislike him, but he's done and said a handful of things over the years that imo are just ridiculous and petty that rub me the wrong way. There are tons of pro golfers in the world, and I don't have to root for all of them just because the majority of golf fans do.


with that said it is cool to see him win the grand slam, but I was really hoping Bryson or Rose would've won instead.

The way the media treats him is annoying. I have a habit of rooting for anyone the media hates honestly. He cheated on his wife "allegedly" with Balionis and the media completely ignores it and still allows her to interview all the players including him. (She does a good job honestly) But the fact they just completely ignored it is insane. Also his hate on Youtube golf is crazy. Anyone that plays golf outside of the PGA tour is wasting their time is what he sounds like.

I'm still happy for him and glad he got the career slam.

Happy for him professionally, but my dislike for him personally comes from him running away from Pinehurst like a baby after choking. Be a man, you make brazillions of dollars playing golf, you'd probably working in a cubicle if you couldn't play golf, so, stand up and be a man win or lose. I can't see Tiger, or Scotty or Phil or anyone else running off like a baby.

So you expect the National Enquirer or TMZ to cover golf now?

No doubt that some of these guys got a side piece on each tour stop but to expect the media to report on it is kind of ridiculous.

That seems borderline ridiculous. You expect infidelity rumors to be reported on in Golf Digest? That's never happened (and rightly so). I have no doubt there are multiple journalists who heard rumors about Tiger. Or DJ allegedly sleeping with multiple players' wives. But they were just rumors at the time and it would have been wrong to report them as news. So they didn't. It was the right call.

Not surprised. I'm guessing if the media ran with every rumor, there would be few pro golfers left unscathed.

Rory sucks because of his holier than thou attitude and the fact that he thinks he's God's gift to the game of golf. I think a lot of that is the result of the Tour propping him up but he sure did embrace the role and play it up.

I thought it was cool to see him achieve the grand slam but personally I would rather see almost anyone else win.

Agree. But many popular players have done a lot worse than that, and it's not held against them.

I think hero worship is scary in sports. They'll let you down because they're human. And in golf, so many of the most popular players are just jerks. And some of the best guys away from the course are hated by the public. It's all based on perception sometimes, and not reality.

I'm just happy it was an amazing final round. After Rory took a 4 stroke lead at 11 I thought it was going to be a snooze fest. Boy was I wrong. And we have Rory to thank for bringing the field back to him.

I saw people talking about this on TexAgs during the tournament, and I just don't remember this.

I remember that when Rory filed for divorce, this is when people seemed to notice that Balionis wasn't wearing a ring (and hadn't been for several months) and people saying the timing might be suggestive of something. But was there ever any actual allegation that Balionis slept with Rory or any other golfer?

When I saw people talking about this I searched for a tabloid article, TMZ comment, or anything about this and all I found was some US Weekly article saying that nothing was going on. Just wondering if this has actually been alleged anywhere besides TexAgs.

I like Rory and I'm glad he won. This is sports. We all pick teams and get competitive. It makes the sports world go round.

Weird how differently people can view things. I don't get this impression of Rory at all. If anything, he's always seemed a little insecure and unsure of himself. I think one of the reasons he hadn't won a major in over a decade is he has a really hard time thinking "I'm Rory F'ing McIlroy".

Most Wins - 29 (T-18)
Most Majors - 5 (T-15)
Grand Slam - 1 Of 6

Assuming he can win a couple more majors (maybe even this year) - should probably be considered top 10 all time overall.

9 or 10 seems about right after yesterday, just due to his overall lower number of majors compared to the rest. He'll be an overwhelming favorite at Quail Hollow and wouldn't at all surprise me to see him win that one given his history there.

Correct. He rarely talked to his playing partner, especially in the final round of a major.
