Not really all that similar in my opinion. Terry merely kept the Horns on the rails in '23. He did not build that roster and they've gotten progressively worse with him actually having fully control of the program.

Who do you think they might go after? Grant McCasland seems like an obvious choice based on his recent success at TTU, his age (48), and strong Texas recruiting ties.

I agree with that. Bobinator stated better than me in the sense that both followed the steps of very strong/successful coaches and, to some extent, enjoyed the momentum left by the previous staff, which was reflected in their inconsistent tourney success.

I'm not convinced they can get McCasland, but I'm sure they'll try. Im also sure they'll kick the tires on Jay Wright and maybe see if Mark Few is worried about Gonzaga in the revenue sharing age. I'm sure they'll see if Royal Ivey is interested in coaching college ball. Maybe see if the ink is dry on that Jai Lucas deal if they miss on their first choices.

Someone mentioned them taking a run at Self which makes some sense too if things are stale in Lawrence.

But I think that's an attractive job, I think I'd rather coach there than Indiana.

Related, we should get Terry on our staff here if we can, though I'm sure he'll end up at Ole Miss or Tennessee.

He can absolutely bring in talent. However, that would require Buzz to bring in someone he has not worked with before.

I was looking into McCasland's contract buyout, which is relatively high at $8M. Also, I looked into Rodney Terry's, and if Texas fired him, they would owe him ~$3M, so based on that, it seems like not the smartest financial move ($11M to bring McCasland).

I am not sure Del Conte can go with a new, unproven coach like Jai Lucas. He is good for Miami because the expectations there are slightly lower than with the Longhorns.

Mark Few feels like Scott Drew of the Pacific Northwest, so it seems difficult to remove him from that region.

Jay Wright would be awesome for them, but he seems way too comfortable with his CBS analyst gig but you never know.

Yeah, I bet there's interest in that job from guys we're not even thinking about too. But I don't see it for McCasland even if money weren't an issue. He's got a good thing going at Tech and he's not a Texas alum like Beard, he's a Baylor guy.

Yeah Buzz won't do it, I mean more if we have a staff change.

Agreed.

Kind of a really interesting place we're in in that a lot of our clued in fans have this inkling that we might be in for a change, but also don't really think we'll have one.

I don't want to be open in this market.
bobinator

I don't want to be open because I think Buzz has mostly been really good here, but so far there's nobody with an opening that I think we'd really be fishing in the same pond with, so could be worse. Texas coming open wouldn't really change that either.

I think Tech would **** a brick before they let another coach walk to Texas, and Grant has different reasons to not go.

I think the Bill Self thing is quite legitimate. Just for everybody.

Nate Oates is call #2. That's a fit.

Musselman is one nobody's talking about, but would fit.

After that you're down to 2.

I could absolutely see them going after Todd Golden (regardless of the drama, it's different than Will Wade).

And TJ Otzelberger is the consolation prize.

Buzz's name was briefly mentioned for Indiana, but nothing else than initial rumors. Based on Buzz's history, predicting what market data he is evaluating is hard. For instance, I read somewhere that when he left Marquette, he assessed the college market/environment in terms of being part of a school without football vs one with a strong one.

I would assume that right now, the best thing is to get a job at a B10 or SEC school. Getting one at a place like A&M, where expectations are reasonable, and the overall pressure is low, might not be a bad gig, but who knows.

I like Buzz and hope he can have a Matt Painter-like journey with us.

I don't think even Texas is gonna pay Oats' buyout.

They love a buyout as much as we do, up and down.

Keatts is out ag NC St one year after making that unexpected final 4 run. Won 45% of his ACC games in his career.

Thought they would let him run it back one more year, but considering they were going to fire him last year before the miracle, it is the right move.

OP updated with NC State. That opening is interesting. Not sure where I think NC State falls in the pecking order in this new era.

Already some internet buzz about Will Wade

Yeah that job feels like the first one where he'd really be in play.

If Michigan St makes a final four run, do we see Izzo bow out? Or does he want that second title so bad that he's going to ride it out until he's 80?

I don't think Izzo, Barnes, or Pearl are capable of retiring this year without a national championship.

And I don't blame them.

They all have one more in them…

NC State should offer the job to Mark Turgeon

I know this is in jest, but if Turg actually wanted to coach again and adapt to the new game, there are far worse options out there.
Get him a GM to scout for the portal and a top flight recruiter on staff and I think he could still do a really good job.

Already some internet buzz about Will Wade

My buddy went to state and really wants Wade, said they have a history of sleazy coaches.

JJ reddick was his second choice

Yeah, and my buddy's second choice of women he'd sleep with is Margot Robbie.

JJ Redick ain't going to NC State.

No surprise.

Question is, does UVA want to completely change direction and get a young, up-and-coming, high-octane coach, or are they good with hiring someone who is a bring-and-mortar kind of coach (read: someone like Buzz...not saying Buzz is or should go to UVA, just asking what style of coach you think they'll pursue.)

Ryan Odom to UVA is my best guess.
