I've also heard the name Bucky McMillan of Samford more than once in the last couple of days. Again, these are potential candidates and guys who could very well emerge as serious contenders in short order, as I don't expect Trev Alberts to let this thing drag out very long.

It's a bold hire. Excited for the ride. It's going to be awesome or a disaster.

I've been around A&M athletics long enough to know how this is going to play out. If those are the 2 choices, it will be a disaster.

From the ESPN article... "The energy and style should help engage an A&M fan base that isn't organically a basketball group."

Hilarious and hopefully, true!

Underwhelming. Name another elite program that would make this gamble. We are a joke of an athletic department.

Just because a few centenarians got lucky drilling holes in the ground doesn't that the old A and M can conjure the reincarnated Dean Smith to spur on its cagers.

Well, we're not an elite program, so…

Yep. So...we struck out about 8 times.

Buckeyball has a defensive rating in the 250s. We're going to get slaughtered. On paper, this is a far worse deal than BK. Maybe if BK had never developed Parkinson's and the Kennedy - Stansbury had lasted 6+ years instead of 3.

The saving grace is taking lots of 3s and making high 30s against turrible competition. Very high tempo rate. That means rush down court and chuck it. They get blocked a lot, and give up a lot of steals. That tells me the offense is undisciplined. Not going to work against athletic transition D in the SEC.

This year's duke team runs one of the best offenses of the OAD era - they are 269 in tempo.

I did not have McMillan on the bingo card. He's only beaten a top 100 team once - Chattanooga...then lost to them a couple of weeks later.

Trev may have been hit in the head too often. Did he mean to hire the Stanford coach Kyle Smith?

A&M fans historically love defense, especially the kind that Billy G ran. Many at the games don't know the difference between a pick & roll and a picket fence.

I appreciate the enthusiasm.

...and Dean Smith worked for a NC winning coach and one of the better coaches of that era: Frank McGuire who won 549 games against 236 losses at St. John's, UNC, and USCe.

McGuire and UNC beat Wilt Chamberlain and Kansas in 1957.

Gonna go out on a limb here and say a lot of his success will depend on the players he recruits. Gonna take a wild stab here and also suggest that Duke would be pretty good at any tempo.

Ouch. That redefines left handed complement.

He's not wrong, though.

I hope the gamble works. I'd like to see something short run in football and basketball besides mediocrity, but that appears unlikely.

Lightning in a bottle - why not.

We're a softball school anyway, right?

Why the **** don't we have gymnastics? - I'm serious here. We'd crush it.

They would make too many TOs at a Samford speed. But yeah, *pretty good,* and Duke's help team defense with a rim protector also makes up for any offensive miscues. No team switches and has ballers guarding 1-5 better...except probably this Houston team.

What's your take Mike?

Quick take. I've known Samford's Athletic Director Martin Newton dating back to when we were young pups and he worked for Converse and he was providing me Converse gear. He knows basketball and is CM Newtons son. He took a leap of faith on Bucky hiring him directly from the high school ranks. That worked out wonderfully for them at Samford. I'm optimistic that he's going to be a winner for A&M. I know he can coach, and if he can get SEC caliber players to come to College Station, this could be a good thing for A&M and Bucky's brand of basketball.

Now hit the portal!

Just Win!

I love this kind of hire man, basketball is fun because we can do weird **** with it. No point in hiring a revolving door of safe hires to get us to the round of 32 every six years.

Wow, while coaching at the mighty Samford he couldn't even beat the national championship runner-up!? What a bum.

Going to need to figure out a way to bring defense into the equation to provide stability when the 3's aren't raining.
