My only goal next year at this point is that by the end of it we feel like there was a decent proof of concept.

If we put together a team that's even semi competitive next season I'll be absolutely hyped.

I just think this style is either super going to work or be an absolute disaster. And I don't mean either final four or a KenPom in the 200s, but either we're competitive with the top third of the league or nowhere near the tournament is what I'm thinking. I don't think we're going to be hovering around the bubble every year.
Don't you think it's going to take at least a couple seasons to figure that out? I mean, if we're under .500 for the season next year, so what? Even a little iota of tournament success talk today is a bit too soon.

Ooops, you were apparently posting the above post as I was writing this. Great minds......

I would think so. Listening to Self's comments, Bucky's system requires 10 to 12 guys with substantial minutes in order to properly work.

It will take some time to build that roster.

Yeah, Evan Miya did a pretty good article about how most of the best teams are built now and despite the common idea that you can just portal yourself a year one roster, that's unlikely for most teams that aren't just flush with cash. And even some of those that are struggle, like Arkansas.

You need returning players, which is why the most valuable guys in the portal are ones with multiple years left.

I also think I should clarify that by my boom or bust take I mean more the program, not any one specific team. We obviously could have a mediocre team in a given year, but what I mean is more that we're either going to be looked at a new power program or we'll be one of the worst in the league. This doesn't have the vibe of being where we are after six years of Buzz.

I don't think there is any way we are going to be looked at as a new power program without at least several Sweet 16 finishes in a 3 or 4 year period. The basketball "establishment" is working very hard to keep A&M and really any program from cracking the barrier. I'll say the same about Auburn and Alabama at this point. The "establishment" is so east coast and mid-west invested, all it will take is for a Michigan or Notre Dame or Connecticut or Duke to have a good year to grab all the pub.

Looking through Samford stats over the last few seasons, I think he's definitely going to need a lot of players due to the style. Not many guys played more than 26-28 minutes but going 10 deep meant that even guys 9 and 10 were getting 10-15 minutes.

Will be interested to see Bucky's scheduling strategy. Won't be surprised if it is somewhat light in year one, but hoping beyond that he continues what Buzz started the last couple of years with putting together exciting and challenging non-con slates.

Big meh on the hire..... definitely not a splash hire. Would guess we take a big step back and then it's a "we'll see" waiting game. Good ole Aggie sports. We will always suck in everything we do.

There was a 0.0% chance we were going to get a splash hire. It has never happened in the history of A&M basketball and there's no reason to think it was going to happen here. Maybe this new guy will work out...maybe he won't. We have no idea. We are not a destination job for college basketball coaches. Either Bucky will do poorly and he'll get fired...or he'll do well and get hired away by a better program.

Until we change the culture at A&M, it is always going to be that way. Until we care about anything other than a.) football and b.) obsessing over Texas, we will just be a so-so basketball program that won't have the ability to attract splash hire type coaches.

I'm perfectly fine with this hire. Hope he does well and becomes the most legendary head coach in Aggie hoops history. Hopefully this guy isn't just a "grab the money from A&M and get lazy" like some of our football coaches have done.

Buzz was a splash (for A&M) but I completely agree with everything else about your post. Especially, the obsessing over Texas part…our fanbase is pathetic, always worried about what big brother in Austin is doing or thinks.

And then this belief A&M is a football school, but there's no evidence we are that, other than spending like one. Alabama, Auburn and Florida are football schools, and they've somehow figured out how to be successful in basketball.

I like this hire, time to embrace it and potentially change the way we look at basketball.

The Aggie inferiority complex collectively assumes that using its biggest resource, money; and meshing it with our strongest emotion, hatred ot t.u.; is somehow the correct path to fully met expectations and general life fulfillment. Never-mind that this formula has been successful zero times; it just hasn't worked because we don't spend enough and don't hate t.u. enough. Give it time. Just like the next five year plan. A few million more peasants may starve, but the collective WILL prevail.

The t.u. thing has been overblown for way too long.
Have a rival, sure.
Hate them, sure.
Play to beat them, sure.

But play to beat EVERYBODY, and let them just be another opponent you need to take down. They don't need extra special attention from us.

Making them the central focus, and using them as any measure of "success" is one of the dumbest and most short-sighted things we do.

You're not going to win Nattys if your field of view barely gets past a 90 mile radius.
Think bigger. Be better. Evolve.

I love the hire! Nothing to lose for A&M really. We were rebuilding ground up anyway. And NIL has made the NCAA into a yearly affair. The best players will go every year to the best combo of pay and exposure for NBA scouts. It's made the tourney pretty dang boring to watch.

A retread coach would be just making a lazy money play (aka Jimbo). A mid-majors guy would be climbing a ladder and leave us in 3-5 anyway.

If this guy can build A&M into a real program, maybe he owns it and stays. I hope he gets some quality assistants that can help him learn the SEC and recruit.

I'm on board Bucky! Now let's get Buccees on Board for NIL!

Not having spent a ton of time on his style, it's rather intriguing. It seems much of the concept of based upon a bunch of journeyman players who are athletic and can shoot, and with maximum pressure would wear out an opposing team's top 5 fairly quickly.

Then the game rests on whether the second 5 can compete at a high level. Depth will be key.

I'm not surprised at the troll comment - they're coming out of the woodwork. Somewaht amazed it gets 14 stars. Are there really 14 trolls on here or are there really 14 sad-sack pathetic Aggies out there needing professional help?
I resolve in 2026 to be more tolerant and respectful of trolls and emotionally fragile, overly pessimistic posters so they don’t run crying to the mods and have me banned for three days.

Probably because we went from the possibility of getting Chris Beard to acquiring a guy that nobody outside of the most hardcore basketball fans have ever even heard of while having a gazillion dollar athletic budget.

Down here in SA for the final four (wife is an Auburn grad). While waiting to sit for lunch in the river walk, struck up a conversation with this other Auburn family. Wife quickly mentions me being a good sport and that I'm an Aggie. The guy immediately goes, oh yall just hired Bucky! They are from the town he coached HS ball at. Had nothing but rave reviews. Loves him. Even said that as much as he loves Pearl, he's jealous we got Bucky and always hoped when Bruce retires they can bring him home, but doesn't think that will be possible now. He'll win right away. Plays super fluid, pass happy ball. Fans and players will love him. The guy has "it". Did mention Bucky grew up a bama fan, but he doesn't think Oats will go anywhere .

Anyway, passing that along. Honestly after the conversation, I went from being "wait and see" to be genuinely very excited.
