Big meh on the hire..... definitely not a splash hire. Would guess we take a big step back and then it's a "we'll see" waiting game. Good ole Aggie sports. We will always suck in everything we do.
There was a 0.0% chance we were going to get a splash hire. It has never happened in the history of A&M basketball and there's no reason to think it was going to happen here. Maybe this new guy will work out...maybe he won't. We have no idea. We are not a destination job for college basketball coaches. Either Bucky will do poorly and he'll get fired...or he'll do well and get hired away by a better program.
Until we change the culture at A&M, it is always going to be that way. Until we care about anything other than a.) football and b.) obsessing over Texas, we will just be a so-so basketball program that won't have the ability to attract splash hire type coaches.
I'm perfectly fine with this hire. Hope he does well and becomes the most legendary head coach in Aggie hoops history. Hopefully this guy isn't just a "grab the money from A&M and get lazy" like some of our football coaches have done.
Buzz was a splash (for A&M) but I completely agree with everything else about your post. Especially, the obsessing over Texas part…our fanbase is pathetic, always worried about what big brother in Austin is doing or thinks.
And then this belief A&M is a football school, but there's no evidence we are that, other than spending like one. Alabama, Auburn and Florida are football schools, and they've somehow figured out how to be successful in basketball.
I like this hire, time to embrace it and potentially change the way we look at basketball.
The Aggie inferiority complex collectively assumes that using its biggest resource, money; and meshing it with our strongest emotion, hatred ot t.u.; is somehow the correct path to fully met expectations and general life fulfillment. Never-mind that this formula has been successful zero times; it just hasn't worked because we don't spend enough and don't hate t.u. enough. Give it time. Just like the next five year plan. A few million more peasants may starve, but the collective WILL prevail.
The t.u. thing has been overblown for way too long.
Have a rival, sure.
Hate them, sure.
Play to beat them, sure.
But play to beat EVERYBODY, and let them just be another opponent you need to take down. They don't need extra special attention from us.
Making them the central focus, and using them as any measure of "success" is one of the dumbest and most short-sighted things we do.
You're not going to win Nattys if your field of view barely gets past a 90 mile radius.
Think bigger. Be better. Evolve.
