apollo got screwed out of silver in 500 short track. Barely touched the guy and he falls
Danny Duberstein

agree. the guy fell because he was desperately trying to hold the inside and not swing wide coming out of the final turn (like another skater that lost out on qualifying out of the semi's because he went too wide coming out of the last turn) and he lost his balance, not because Ohno pushed him.

it was the same reason the Korean guy in first place fell - he was trying not to swing wide and give Hamelin the inside move on the last few feet.

i agree. i don't think apolo was the reason the guy fell. but you just KNEW they were going to DQ him anyway. especially considering there have been death threats from korean fans over the judging in short track.

i'm so sad. i thought he'd at least get a bronze. only one more race for him.

that's not the first Canadian homecooking i've seen in short track. in one of the earlier events this week, they had a guy advanced to the next round when he got taken out in a crash even though he wasn't in advancing position at the time. chalk this medal up as a benefit of being the home country.

apolo was pretty gracious in his interview after being DQ'd. meanwhile, the koreans just beetch and moan about it anytime it happens to them. and it does seem like it happens to them quite often. dirty players?

Yeah, that was bs. The announcer kept saying how Apolo barely touched him but because he fell, the dq was justified. Well the Canadian barely touched the Korean and, guess what, he also fell. Completely inconsistent call and surely some home cooking involved.
Danny Duberstein

those two crashes were very, very similar. the lead guy is trying to hold the inside and not swing wide, VERY light contact, and then the guy slips and grabs at the skates of the person behind him.

The Korean short track team and general media can suck it. Apolo just owns space in their heads and they absolutely will not let anything in the past go, and constantly complain about his "unfair" medals. Yet, when Apolo gets bounced today, is he b| tc ing? Nope, he takes the DQ with class and understands that this is how the sport works.

Also, getting a little annoyed with Canada. I frequent some other sites online and the ***** envy that some Canadians have for the US rivals Baylor levels of pathetic. I understand not all are like that, but it really gets annoying sometimes. As you have pointed out, when Hamelin was advanced in another race (1500 maybe?), he wasn't even in qualifying position. Blatant disregard for rules that I disagree with.

If the three racers in question didn't have KOREA or CANADA on their backs, I doubt Apolo would have been DQed. My 2 cents.

I am sad for Apolo, and think the call was questionable at best, but that is short track for you. At least Ohno realizes that fact.

So its not a set of judges deciding on DQs? Just some home country officials? Something that crucial, shouldn't they have a set of judges from various countries like in figure skating?
Danny Duberstein

Just one. It was supposed to be an Aussie, but after he ****ed up the relay call this week, a Canadian apparently got tabbed as the replacement for tonight.

I'd agree that something with so much subjectivity should probably require multiple judges. Maybe 3 so you can at least get a 2/3 majority for a DQ call, or worst case, go with 2 but they both have to agree to make any DQ's.

U.S.A. matches their record Salt Lake City haul with 34 medals.

We are guaranteed 2 more tomorrow putting us at 36. That would tie the record set by Germany.

We'll probably finish with 37-40.

I do wish we had more gold though. Canada will probably try to hold that over our head, as it looks like they'll probably finish on top in that count.

Good job by Katherine Reutter.

On an aside, Wang Meng is one of the most unattractive women I've ever seen.

Anyone see the segment this afternoon on Gander, Canada and what they did on Sept. 11, 2001? That was a great story...more people should know about what those amazing people did for all of the travelers stranded there when they grounded all of the air travel.

Gander.

They also did a piece on a member of the bobsled team (it's not the pilot but I think his name is Steve too). His family put down an $8,000 deposit on a place to stay in Canada and it turned out to be a scam. They ended staying in the house of a Canadian woman for free. She was one of a couple dozen Canadians who offered the family a place to stay.

Sorry that Anne Murray did not sing "O' Canada". At least she carried the Olympic Flag in the opening.

I'm going to miss these too. I don't watch a lot of TV, but I caught most of these. Something different than the usual crap.

I could watch them riding the exercise bike or on the treadmill. There's nothing else I can usually get into to watch on a nightly basis like this.

I like the Summer Olympics, too, but there's something about the Winter Olympics that I like a little more. Hard to explain. Maybe it's that the Winter Olympics are more "cozy."

Is it just me or has NBC's coverage been the worst ever?

I actually thought it was pretty good. Other than showing ice dancing over hockey, I thought NBC did a good job with these.

I know out here on the west coast people hate the tape delay, but it doesn't bother me that much. Saves me having to dvr them.

I also like NBC's commentators. I like Bob Costas and Al Michaels, Tom Hammond and Al Trautwig.

I am and have always been a fan of NBC's coverage. I believe they have the best commentators and the most experience. It is impossible not to tape delay events with the shear number of them. Yes it would be nice to watch the downhill live at 3pm in the afternoon, but it just doesn't make sense for them too. Their camera work was awesome, for example the downhill and basically all skiing events. Good times and I'm already looking forward to Sochi 2014
Theo
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think the issue with the tape delay isn't so much running afternoon events in primetime. It's that even primetime events are delayed out here on the west coast.

Blast from the past hearing the old Soviet national anthem.

And that is some tacky Russian olympic gear. My word.

Ezclusive in prime time is a lot more valuable than live television.

As long as the events are on and no one spoils the results, I don't really care. Part of the problem with the Winter Olympics is there simply aren't a lot of events and the nature of many/most requires them to be under the sun, atleast relative to the Summer Games.
