I think even after all these years Iron Man may be the best looking MCU movie.

I was stoked after Iron Man was announced and then released in 2008. He was always my favorite and I bought a lot of IM and Avengers comics as a kid.

Casting RDJ as Stark surprised me because he was not a big star and had been thru some of the same struggles as Stark.

2008 was a rough year for me personally and that movie helped take the edge off for a bit. And it was such a surprise with how well it was done. Really a leap forward compared to other superhero movies before it.

The producer and group that brought a talking, machine gun toting raccoon to life along with a walking tree whose vocabulary is "I", "am" and "Groot" is not one I would normally question.

But I seriously question making the Thing from other than Ben Grimm. Don't do it Feige.

Interesting that Loki drops on a Friday instead of a Wednesday.

I assume this also means they're not reshooting Majors' scenes.

They can't air Loki on Thor's Day or Odin's Day, so they went with Frigga's Day.

That was how we kicked off the tv show era, I loved it since I didn't work fridays and was mad when it switched.

It has been a long time though since they did this

I've given a stupid amount of thought to which quality Marvel Comics characters haven't appeared on film yet, and what could help bring a tad bit of levity into future MCU films. Tonight, after too much coffee, I finally had an epiphany. Are you ready?

Rick Jones.

He's the Forrest Gump of Marvel Comics. An ordinary, not too bright rural kid who ends up at the center of several key events:

-accidentally responsible for Bruce Banner becoming the Hulk
-accidentally helped the original Avengers meet each other by blabbing on a ham radio
-sidekick and new Bucky to Captain America
-leader of the Teen Brigade that offers radio support to the heroes
-temporary alter ego to the original Captain Marvel
-Spacefaring w/ Rom the Space Knight
-cancer cured by the Beyonder
-became a Hulk-like monster himself
-died in the snap
And on and on.

Unsurprisingly, I'm not the first person to think of this (in fact it may have been mentioned already somewhere in this thread):
www.cultureslate.com/editorials/where-in-the-multiverse-is-rick-jones
Quote:

Yet currently in the MCU his number of appearances stands at zero and his number of mentions at one. If you're trying to recall that one mention and happen to have blinked at the 2:27 mark of The Incredible Hulk, you missed it. In a montage sequence setting up the beginning of the movie, Rick Jones's name appears on a list of known associates of Bruce Banner for less than one second
So he does at least technically already exist in the MCU.

Not sure this is exactly a blockbuster idea, but it could be a fun one-off D+ movie about some young social media (or something to replace the HAM radio angle) dork who inadvertently plays a role in several pivotal events throughout the MCU.

It's redeemable but the sheen is definitely off of Kang. Feels like it'd be easier to sell almost anyone else at this point.

For real. If Loki can be a Croki on another timeline, Kang can be recast.

They should, and probably have to, but after featuring him on Loki it becomes more complicated. Especially if, as we suspect, Majors is GREAT.

It's even weirder because until his performance as He Who Remains, Majors wasn't even going to be Kang.

I think it might be worth asking, though. Did they even really have a PLAN for the Kang Dynasty? To what degree?

Seeing new ads for Secret Invasion which starts in a month. Man, I just don't know. There's a line in the trailer along the lines of "why haven't you called any of your special friends?" with Fury saying "I have to do this on my own."

I'm a guy who understands and supports the narrative need to limit the involvement of various Avengers in stuff. You write around it so every time there's something heavy to be lifted the Hulk doesn't just show up. But Secret Invasion without any (or few) superheroes?

It seems the impact of the Invasion would be Cap showing up. Or Hawkeye locked up somewhere secretly while he's being impersonated. Or whatever.

A Sam Jackson Nick Fury spy show can be a lot of fun and really good and I hope it is. I'm just not sure what this show IS.

I am not comics expert but I kind of expected Secret Invasion be a bigger event? Wasn't it a major crossover with hero's being replaced by Skrulls? I know Thor 3 is loved by most but to me that represented a major waste of Planet Hulk. This looks like another potentially wasted major story.

Comics Secret Invasion was a crossover event a la Civil War. Nearly every superhero was involved… but also the execution was a little lacking at times (similar to Civil War). Skrulls had found a way to also duplicate abilities so you'd have shapeshifters suddenly look and attack like Wolverine or Iron Man (makes no sense, he has no powers).

Certainly had its cool moments, and the one of the more memorable parts was learning who had been replaced years prior. By my recollection that included Spider-Woman, who'd been an Avenger for a year or more, and Hank Pym. Nick Fury puts together a new team of kids, essentially, who couldn't have possibly been replaced by Skrulls since he was the only one who knew about their abilities.

Since they opted to make this a TV show instead of an Avengers movie, the stakes have been lowered substantially. Now (apparently) it's more of a spy show, involving essentially all the spies and politicians we know in this universe. I hope it has a few surprises and cameos in it because otherwise it is kind of a waste of the event to spend it on a handful of FBI types.

I am curious on how they plan to introduce the X-men.. I am hoping it is something like Siege Perilous where Professor X return from space and can't find his X-men.. and the movie is about reuniting the team and getting them to remember their past life.. or has the introduction of teams in the past been done to much already (Antman, Capt Marvel .. and now the rumor is FF)

So basically any MCU actor who's face we recognize, but we don't know their name is probably a Skrull and has been for a while.

Finally caught Quantumania, I think the movie just tried to do so many things, with so many different relationships, that none of them felt very satisfying. It was fun, but just feels like it was wasted potential.

With GOTG3 now out of the way, I'm really hoping we're *finally* about to get some overarching consistency/connective tissue again from the MCU...

- Secret Invasion (June 21) apparently leads directly into/sets up The Marvels (November 10). So we not only finally get Nick Fury back (who at least lives gives us an anchor of sorts from the good 'ol days), with Secret Invasion rumored to be the MCU's Andor (at least in tone, but likely not quality), the rest of 2023 could be somewhat of a return to form, with what amounts to one, long story culminating in a movie.

- Then, together, Captain America: Brave New World (May 3, 2024) and Thunderbolts (July 26, 2024) will tell another connected story, with a number of the same cast across both movies, which hopefully builds on the events of Secret Invasion and The Marvels.

If anything, for those of us who really loved Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, the next year of releases look to be more in line with those two movies, going back to the more grounded, political thriller vibe, which I'm genuinely excited for, even if Brave New World and Thunderbolts still kind of feel like a uniting of a bunch of C-team characters.

(Granted, there's also Echo on November 29, but it seems even Disney is half-assing that release, so I'm not really considering it either.)

I'm also super curious to see what Marvel announces at Comic-Con next month - if they're going to announce a recasting of Kang, or if they choose to go in a new villain direction altogether (considering the writer of Kang Dynasty was recently let go and there's been no news of any kind on Kang at all). The writer's strike is also affecting a bunch of Marvel projects, so between that and the whole Kang thang, we could very well be a looking at a complete retooling of the slate yet again.
