3 episodes to go and I have to say this may be my favorite Netflix original series yet.

As an avid fly fisherman, the fishing scenes are absolutely brutal to watch. Pretty clear that the writers, directors, and actors have never set foot in a stream before!

Haven't watched this but the shot of a lake from the trailer looks like it could be Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Very cool lake. Anyone know?

haha I thought the same thing. I guess the beauty of fly fishing is what they were going for, but honestly being a Chicago guy down at the lake reminiscing on old times (which is what the FBI agent was playing up), they could have just as easily fished with some ultra-lights in the river since he's an amateur, and Russ could have just shown him the honey-hole. Would have been more realistic.

If it was halfway decent it wouldn't have bothered me as much, but it was so bad.

Since it is supposed to be lake of the Ozarks, they should be going after paddlefish.

I've never seen such ****ty casting. Then what I don't understand is that he got the idea to open a shop due to his nice fly he tied, but they're going to focus on spinning reels? Makes zero sense.

Lol. Just saw this part about the "high end spinner."

Why even have that fly conversation?

Finishing up the People vs. OJ right now, should I start this one? Never watched Bloodline but loved BB.

This moves at a way quicker pace than Bloodline, even s1. It is very straightforward but way better imo. But I'll admit I really liked bloodline s1.

I just finished the 3rd episode... loving the show.

But does every show have to have a random gay storyline?

Well of course, because why not? Though the whole "gay" swerve will subside as a required plot point at some point as it has become more mainstream.

Also, you have to suspend disbelief for the area of lake of the Ozarks..

While that area definitely has its 'necks, the entire series is "locals are all criminal rednecks and tourists are all big city elitists."

Just let it be, don't worry about the creative liberties, and enjoy the show.

definitely enjoying this and this not necessarily a knock on the show, but the liberal sentiments are flowing in this show. Like when Bateman and Linney are just freely talking about aborting their unborn kid. Not making a judgment either way on abortion and I don't want to derail the thread.

what you didn't like the guy going to pound town on that guys face? I mean it felt like it was necessary for the plot to advance.

2 episodes in and it definitely has the feel of Breaking Bad in terms of the obvious plot similarities but also in terms of cheering both for and against Bateman's character. Very intrigued so far and will continue to watch.

The gay angle doesn't really bother me. I was more concerned the FBI agent seems crazy/unstable. Maybe I'm still making BB comparisons while watching, but I like the straight edge cop, like Hank, going after the bad guys. I think his involvement with Russ though is what the writers will use to bring down the happenings at the church since he's a fed and all. I'm only 5 in right now but really liking the show

It's fairly obvious not everyone is on the same page as you on this thread, so perhaps we should use [spoiler] tags when discussing specific plot points?
Bunk Moreland
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know this comparison isn't perfect because the show I'm going to compare it to was dealing with law enforcement as the centerpiece, but just the style & storytelling compares much more to The Shield than BB for me.

It's super straight forward and action-packed and constant dread. BB wasn't trying to trick you, but they always kept important things from you for periods of time as a storytelling tool. This show doesn't do that at all imo.

I watched and loved both those shows and agree to both similarities. BB is just an easy comparison to the main character and his profession.

But yea, I don't think anyone expects their comp to be 1:1. Comparing any show to BB is meant as just an overall compliment to the shows quality imo.

I am only 2 episodes in and am hoping that at some point one of these characters begins to show some redeeming qualities. I might get flamed for this, but everyone in this show, apart from the kids, and maybe the PI, just seem like really bad, insufferable people. Call me old fashioned but I prefer for my protagonist to have at least some traces of nobility or righteousness...or at least an upbeat sense of humor at times. They don't have to be goody two shoes or anything. Take the brothers from Hell or High Water for instance. The rowdy one was a bad dude, but he at least didn't come across as completely miserable and pathetic 24/7...he was screwed up, but seemed to have a heart. The only good thing you could say about Marty is that he kisses his kids and says he loves them...but in reality, he was about to kill himself and wreck their lives...partly for the chance at insurance money, but mostly because he hates his existence.

Really well made show and the acting is great. I am thoroughly enjoying it so far...just hoping they begin to grow as a family or one of the parents becomes a half decent person eventually. Maybe their relationship will strengthen somehow. Not sure I can take several seasons of ONLY constant negativity and bleakness.

The "Decks Dark" by Radiohead at the end of Ep 1 was awesome.

what about the lady who owns the Blue Cat? She's not redeeming?

I'd taker her up on the tequila and dance floor Sunday night offer.

"anti-hero" stories are not new. You watch House of Cards? It's the same deal. The "protagonist" of the story is morally vacant, but it's compelling to the viewer because of the internal conflict between hating the character and rooting for him to accomplish his objectives. If it's not your cup of tea, I don't think this show is for you.

That closing scene was pretty incredible, and they played the entire track (my fav from AMSP). Made up for any complaints I may have had about the 1st episode.

Same here.

What's up with some of these writers?

The audience has to be able to relate to the protagonist at some point or they lose interest.

I don't know. I would gladly put a bullet right between his eyes. I wouldn't even have a problem shooting the character played by Chris Pine.

What made that movie for me was Jeff Bridges. A salty old timer with no fear whatsoever of these two renegades. Unlike the character Tommy Lee Jones played in No Country where he was dreading a confrontation with Chigurh.

But your point is well taken. The audience needs to connect with a major character in the movie or they lose interest. I started watching Breaking Bad toward the end of Season 2. Since I was not familiar with Walt's character at the beginning (before he broke bad), I quickly lost interest. Watching it from the beginning, which I am now with the AMC Sunday BB marathons, makes it easier for me to understand Walt. Plus, I missed the episodes with Hank, who I can relate to. And who doesn't like Saul?

Never seen it, but I was a fan of Breaking Bad, so I get it. I guess I just hope this show isn't ALL dark and depressing ALL the time. I really do enjoy it so far, just rooting for some of the people to change.

I agree...I guess I just found the bad brother to at least be humorous and loyal. It was fun to watch them, even though I was pulling for Jeff Bridges and his partner, and was legitimately sad when Alberto died. This show is just really dark so far. I'll probably watch the entire first season because it is very well made. Just not sure I can take several seasons of the worst traits of human beings on display constantly. Only so much of a broken dysfunctional family I can watch.
