I'll keep watching. It's not bad, and ditto on how impressive the effects were for a TV show. Hopefully, it will hit its stride and deliver more laughs.

I was actually thinking several times...wow the budget for this must be up there. And I was expecting low budget really.

Jon Favreau directed it and is an EP.

I'm giving it a chance.

I thought it was really disappointing. Was hoping for Galaxy Quest but it's more light-hearted than funny, and it's not a parody at all. I'm not sure what it is. The writing was weak and characters bland and unimaginative or unbelievable. They seem to have a pretty big budget, but the other than aspects of the look (it's nice-looking but very sterile) the quality was low.

Pilots aren't always indicative, but I can't see this lasting long and don't think I'll watch again.

I enjoyed it. Will continue watching and see where it goes.

I want to watch ST Discovery but I'm not going to pay for another streaming service. Orville may have to be my space adventure did after The Expanse.

Thanks. It's funny that it uses episodes of Archer and Family Guy in the examples, since those are animated shows and therefore don't really fit the definition.

It was a big "WTH!?" for me. Is it a space drama? Single camera comedy? Sit-com? SyFy reject?

I had the same confusion about "The Ranch", a sit-com, western, 30 minute dramedy.

It was very light, but I kind of enjoyed it. If it's convenient, I'll watch again.

The FX only show what milleniels are caprable of with a new MacBook. There are things on YouTube that are similarly impressive, but somehow the FX seemed campy and fun. Well done.

FYI for all the people talking about it being on against Sunday Night Football....

It is actually scheduled for THURSDAY nights at 8pm but for some reason the first 2 episodes are on Sundays.

It switches after this Sunday - thus we get Sunday the 17th and Thursday the 21st...then continuing on Thursdays.

And ratings for it were pretty solid....

Quote:

As it currently stands, "The Orville" averaged a 2.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 7.3 million total viewers, airing at 8 p.m. That means it is currently the second-biggest broadcast drama premiere in the key demo since NBC's "This Is Us" last September (2.8), excluding Super Bowl lead-ins. In addition, the show was the most social scripted program on broadcast Sunday based on total Twitter interactions.

seeing as how the highly rated Cowboys/Giants game started midway through the episode that is pretty good.

Quote:

Elsewhere on broadcast, NBC aired the first "Sunday Night Football" game of the season, with the New York Giants matchup against the Dallas Cowboys averaging an 8.0 and 21.6 million viewers during primetime. That is up from the first Sunday night game last year, which drew a 7.5 and 20.7 million viewers.

Following the Firefly playbook, I see. Are we sure this episode was really supposed to air first?

I actually enjoyed it....seemed like they were going for a futuristic reality where people in the future are still screw ups as opposed to the ST world where they are all robots and try for perfection. They goof off at times, they crack jokes on the bridge when the captain is out particularly, they have weird quirks and needs, some of them are prejudiced against other aliens or even humans, they BS and brag about stuff and make weird holodeck fantasies (to network standards). These people are also on a mid level ship so not the best of the best.

I'll stick with it a while for sure.
I found it to be "trying too hard" maybe? I couldn't put my finger on it. But Pilots are rarely good, so I will stick with it.

It had a few pretty funny lines where I could see what they were trying to do - more like a Star Trek meets mild Idiocracy...

The coke on the bridge bit was decent. I think they were trying to be funny and take shots at Star Trek when the Lead Scientist kept telling them, "Wait, I can't tell you here, follow me to where we can talk" (i.e. into some trap). It was a bit bizarre.

I liked the blue alien at the beginning with the blue splat. I thought the CGI was just good enough - but some of the transitions were very lengthy like the effects department were just trying to make time... so it didn't really transition well.

The dialogue was very clunky and "You speak..." pause "now you speak" pause "now I speak again"...

My favorite character was the male-only alien who is about to have an egg - he was like Klingon meets Drax from GotG

I found it amusing.

It was sold as some kind of laugh-a-minute Star Trek parody, which I don't think was ever Macfarlane's intentions. I think we could blame Fox for the promos.

This seems like a very sincere homage to Trek that doesn't take itself very seriously. Hell, I felt like I was watching some distant ST spin-off series. It was only the little moments of comedy that reminded me that I wasn't.

The effects were decent, the characters were pretty interesting and it kept my attention.

I felt the glue-gun was a nice touch. "All this advanced technology and what are we doing? Using a hot-glue gun to stick a seed to a machine. Maybe later I can make a macaroni man."

I didn't expect much so I wasn't disappointed. I felt the comedy was juvenile and the writing was poor. If they are going to try to put comedy in this show they need to do a better job or just forget it. Even with my negative comments I am going to watch it again. Hopefully it will improve.

If you were expecting non juvenile comedy from Seth McFarlane you are watching the wrong show.

I assumed it was a parody simply because of the ships name. That is a terrible damn name for a ship.

I wonder how many people won't watch it simply because of that.

Petty and nonsensical. I know.

Speaking of which, did anybody else notice that he had a model of the Wright Flyer on his desk? I bet we'll see the sister ship named Wilbur in a future episode.

I liked it way better than last week. Just seemed more cohesive.

On the minus, I rolled my eyes at the anti-zoo commentary. I also get annoyed when they try to show character growth for characters we don't know. I'm really glad this character whose name I don't remember had such a life and viewpoint changing experience though. Good for them
