Okay, I barely remember the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies and haven't seen any of the newer ones, and have never read a Spider-Man comic. Obviously I'll miss all the inside jokes and Easter egggs, but will the movie make sense or do you need some knowledge of the comic history to really "get" it? I'm completely intrigued by the reviews, I just feel like I don't know enough of the backstory to appreciate it. Does the movie explain itself well enough for a Spidey virgin to really enjoy?

I would not recommend this movie for you. It will seem like any other cartoon you could see on Netflix or YouTube, and you'll be a little disappointed since the reviews have set an impossible bar.

However, if curiosity has gotten a hold of you and won't stop until you see it, you might as well give in. Won't hurt or cost much.
Dissenting opinion here. The movie does an efficient job of covering enough origin story detail to understand what's going on with no prior exposure to the comics. I've read a handful of comics over the years, none of them Spider-Man comics. Honestly, this is my favorite movie of the year. A better gauge would be your tolerance for intense, chaotic action sequences. If that sort of thing is boring or frustrating for you, then you may want to skip it. I loved it, but my wife didn't.
I wanted to back-up this statement. The movie is heavy on action and "inside jokes" about Spiderman. I really enjoyed it, but my wife did not. She didn't get a lot of the jokes and the action/animation just wasn't something that really interested her. Just providing expectations. I thought it was a lot of fun and really cool.

Also, I did see it in 3D. I can't remember if I've ever seen a movie in 3D other than at the museum, but it was phenomenal and I highly recommend it as others have.

Is 3D technology being used properly now for other movies? I've always dismissed it as an option, but I may be missing out based on how good this was to watch in 3D. Curious to hear others thoughts on this.

3D has generally been a terrible gimmick ever since Avatar. The problem is no movie I ever saw in 3D was actually made for it like Avatar so it always ends up being a cheap gimmick to me. These days I avoid 3D showings but I'm kind of disappointed I avoided it for spiderverse now.

Entertaining? Yes they were, but there was nothing extraordinary about the stories for any of those. Some cool scenes in all of them, but mostly pretty safe and bland comic fare. The formula for MCU success.

I definitely enjoyed the spiderverse for changing it up a bit.

Homecoming had a huge twist in it. People audibly gasped when I saw it in the theater.

What are you referring to exactly, the bad guy being the girlfriend's father?

Ehh screw it, I obviously don't know how the spoiler tags work. If you haven't seen Homecoming yet you probably don't plan to.

Saw this today with my son and his friend. I loved it. Had they not been with me I wanted to go buy another ticket and watch it again. Can't remember the last movie that made me feel like that.
Loved the art (Kingpin was a little weird), music, and story. It was funny, action packed, full of Easter eggs, and full of emotion.
It made me want to double check I had already read all the Miles Morales and Spider Gwen comics. And go read them again if I had.

Just won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film! Should help increase it's odds to win the Oscar over Incredibles 2.

It shouldn't even be remotely close

Saw it today. Great movie.

Took a little getting used to the fuzzy background, but easily the best animated movie I've ever seen.

Loved loved loved this movie. My daughters who are too young for any inside jokes loved this movie. I never buy movies but will likely buy this one just because. Completely captured the chaos, humor and passion that is what makes Spider-Man the greatest super hero.

Easily better than Homecoming. Not even close. Why? No ****ing Stark suit. That ruined Homecoming for me. I enjoyed it but every time his suit would do something Spidey should've been able to do for himself, I'd cringe.

Preordered on Amazon already.

That said, It may or may not have hit torrents yesterday.

but I would not know anything about that.

and it is a shame that Black panther was nominated, and not this.
This is so much more a relevant movie to black Americans than those fake blacks in a fake country with a fake history, yet black people in the real world are out spouting "Wakanda forever" bull*****

As a black man... no.

VUDU is doing disc + digital on this one so I went that route. Get to enjoy a rewatch this weekend and then get the 4K disc on release day.

This thing is LOADED with extras. Tons of behind the scenes making of featurettes and a commentary track along with a super cool extended cut.

The "alt universe" cut is really fantastic if you're at all interested in animation. It's got a new intro and is a new edit with a bunch of deleted scenes. Some are storyboards, some are rough animation, and some are finished, really cool to see some of the ideas that didn't quite make it (like the relationship with Miles and his roommate).

Per the intro from Lord and Miller, we're in an alternate universe so why couldn't an alternate edit exist somewhere?

Best overall movie I've seen in a while. A real Joy. I only wish I'd done it in 3D.

Watched tonight. Totally kick ass movie and one of the best movies I've seen in a while. If we are going to nominate movies for racial reasons this is the movie that should have been nominated. This movie actually gave me hope for all of us which sounds ridiculous but I thought it was as equally as inspiring as entertaining. I've always been skeptical of a Miles Morales Spider-Man comic but if this is what it's about I'm sold.

I can't wait to buy this again in 4k Blu-ray.

May get laughed at because this is a cartoon and the MCU fandom is crazy but I think this is a top 5 comic book movie with more heart than 95% of the MCU movies.

Bought the 4K version tonight and still holds up just as much if not more a second time. Beautiful movie.

i certainly wouldn't laugh at anybody who had it in their top 5. i haven't made a list in a long time, so i'm not sure it'd be top 5 for me, but it's certainly in the conversation

I've had it on repeat in the background when working from home and it's just genuinely fantastic and only gets better.

As a designer/animator I also love the artistic approach they took with this film, they nailed the feel and how they executed it technically is off the charts amazing. You guys don't know how excited the success of this film has made the animation community, I'm hoping we'll see some riskier things coming because of what they've shown they can do in this movie.
