And this is not "hive" mentality. I tried to give this show a shot, was down with the eerie vibe and weird characters for a bit, but at some point, you actually have to take the thing somewhere. Do something interesting. What you are seeing are people that just hit the "wtf, this is just more of the same" breaking point and patience is finally wearing out. Which naturally happens after watching 4-5 episodes of something where the characters only seem to get less realistic and believable, while at the same time the plot doesn't really go anywhere.

What it boils down to for me is that virtually none of these characters seem like real people or have real, realistic interactions with each other, all while taking part in a plot that doesn't ever advance.
I think this is where I am with the show, too.

What character development and what suspense? I love a slow burn type show but it literally seems like there has been no suspense at all. What suspense are you referring to? And I don't really know any more about the characters now then I did after episode one or two.

Did you not see the suspense of Calhoun Day? Where one character would stare down another and then that character would stare down someone else and then so on and so on. The suspense of everyone in the town being so shifty eyed. It could be any one of them! They're all weird! The suspense is killing me! I was on the edge of my seat with everyone staring each other down.

I get what some are saying about how everyone in the town is too weird, too unbelievable. However, having lived in the deep south for 12 years, I don't find it that unbelievable. Now, I know nothing about Missouri and if their rural communities are anything like southern Louisiana, where i lived. But I met a lot of BSC drunks in the sticks of Louisiana that would shock the average human.

With that said, I am still kinda meh on the show so far.

The demographic in this thread? Very interested in what you think the demographic in this thread actually is. A bunch of Paul Blart Mall Cop fans?

I'm pretty damn sure that the demographic of TexAgs is primarily middle aged white males.

If we take a look at the two HBO shows that are on Sunday, Succession and Sharp Objects, one has gotten a great reception on this board and one has not. Here, that is. Sharp Objects is a show that revolves around sublte messaging about women's power, their sexuality, and their relationships with a couple of men thrown in the mix. Succession is a bunch of rich white dudes back stabbing each other with a couple of women thrown in the mix. So yeah, it doesn't surprise me that one does better than the other here because the two are aimed at different audiences in general and one of those is not really present on these forums very much..

And for the record, I'm pretty sure there are no Paul Bart Mall Cop fans in existence. Anywhere.

I don't think you have enough evidence to start up that type of stuff. Some things aren't for everyone.

Im a 31 year old white dude who thinks both shows are incredibly mediocre but I'm not nearly as frustrated with Sharp Objects(at least yet) as I was with Succession.

What social commentary does that make? (that's the lobbing of a softball for someone to respond with "it makes you an idiot" .)

We all have tastes and opinions. Sometimes they align, sometimes they don't.

Give me a break. One is engaging and well written, the other is not. It's that simple. I will watch ANYTHING with any gender and any race in any role. Literally all that I and many others care about is quality. I would be championing the hell out of this, no matter its subject matter and democgraphical bent, if it was a better-told story.

Of course some things aren't for everyone. That's pretty much my point!

I have no idea what social commentary you can get from what TV shows people like here and I'm not inffering you take any. My point is that these shows are made with certain demographics in mind. MTV doesn't make Jack Ass for elderly house wives, right? Well, I don't think Sharp Objects is really made for the type of people on TexAgs for the most part.

Look at the people in this thread saying their wife made them watch it.

According to YOU. The reviews around the internet don't agree with you about it being poorly written. You're obviously welcome to your opinion, but that doesn't make it fact.

If the show was universally panned that would be one thing. But far from it. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly positive.

I also do believe that YOU would watch ANYTHING regardless of the audience it's intended for. You started a SBC thread, right? But that doesn't mean EVERYONE is like YOU.

You don't need to take what I say personally, you know.

Don't agree. I'm definitely a 40 something white dude and I am enjoying Sharp Objexts. I get the frustration of the story moving slowly, but I'm still enjoying it.

I also loved succession.

People have different tastes. No biggie. Many on this thread LOVED Westworld season 2. I thought it was a sloppy mess of a piece of crap storyline with so many issues I don't understand why I stuck with it. Doubt I'll do Season 3.

Different strokes for different folks. No biggie.

Yeah I'm making a broad generalization, but are you telling me that shows produced don't have intended audiences? How many Tyler Perry threads do you see on TexAgs?

There are people int his thread who are literally saying their wives made them watch the show and you're acting like its crazy and offensive that I'm saying that Sharper Object's intended audience is not the demographic of TexAgs. That doesn't mean no one outside that target can like it or that everyone who likes it has to be a woman. It just means that shows that are intended for an audience outside of the demographic here will not be as popular here.

Do you really disagree with that?

And there is nothing accusatory about what I said. No one has to like anything. I'm not sure why you're inferring anything accusatory for me talking about people not liking a show, but thats all on you. It's not a crime to dislike a show for ANY reason, FYI.
TCTTS

As I said I am disappointed by SO, but FWIW, it has a higher overall ranking on both IMDb (fans) and RT (critics) than Succession.

It's ok to like one over the other and accept that others feel differently.

I'm totally fine with a slow burning plot. But fill that slow burning plot with too many paper-thin characters that I don't buy having interactions that I don't buy, and that's a bad combo. But that is obviously my opinion (not held alone, but nevertheless).

And thats the main hurdle I have with saying that this show is bad because of bad writing. Its OK for anyone to have that opinion, but it certainly isn't a prevalent one.

You keep bringing up that people are only watching this because their wives dragged them along, but I've seen a couple of people say that there wives aren't impressed with this show either. Same with my wife. I enjoyed Big Little Lies and that was definitely as chick show as chick show gets.

That was Fargo season 2. Texags absolutely masturbates and jizzes all over itself for that show. Yes. Aliens were a plot point for Fargo Season 2.

But I'm being told this show sucks. I guess I'll just ignore since I'm actually enjoying the character development and suspense.

Spoiler alert

I just finished season2, episode 8 a couple days ago

I read the book years ago and cannot remember who did it or anything else- my only memory is that the book was dark AF and not as enjoyable as Gone Girl.

I'm struggling to get through this each week. No one seems to have any agency or human motivations/emotions. The casual rape references and acceptance to the point of staging an annual play to commemorate a gang rape?

Why does the old newspaperman even like Amy Adams? That to me is the weirdest through line of the show- it's a total trope of the gruff Lou Grant guy and his female protge.

This, along with basically everything else in the show, is presumably still to be told.

I assume reviewers have seen the whole season? That's mostly why I'm trying to hold on until the end, it's got enough positive reviews that i'm hoping the end somehow makes this middle retroactively important.

I also wonder if reviewing movies and shows for a living makes one like shows like this more. This may be trending into the philosophical a little bit, but if that's your whole thing, then you probably appreciate how different this show is from everything else out there. It's contrast to typical TV shows is in and of itself a positive attribute if you watch TONS of shows.

But if you only watch a few shows and basically weigh shows of "is this worth my time and whatever other shows I might be giving up to be able to watch it," then that contrast isn't necessarily a positive just by itself.

I think this is a very common issue when it comes to movie reviews, which I assume also surfaces with tv as well. When it comes to critics' scores, I feel like it is a definite advantage to be different and oftentimes not a reflection of quality.

I'm just theorizing here, but I'd actually think it's a bigger effect for TV than it is for movies these days. There are a lot of 'weird' movies out there these days, but a lot of TV shows, even really good ones, don't go too far off the road.
