I'd never seen the Wachowskis before. I think I always pictured them as those weird dreadlocked ghosts from the sequel!

Anyway, haven't seen the Matrix in years, somehow, but we practically wore out the DVD rewatching those fight scenes.

Second movie is the only one I've ever fallen asleep watching at a movie theater.

that long ass scene with the doors and the oracle...blah...sooo boring.

Now, in the movies defense I had played in a company golf tourney that morning/afternoon and drank about 20 beers plus it was hot as hell. The Wife wanted to go out that night so we went to see reloaded...

Never even attempted to watch the 3rd one.

By all accounts, they came from an incredibly stable home, and had two great parents who they're apparently still very close with. They even put their dad in Reloaded (he's one of the truck drivers on the highway scene). I could be wrong, but it doesn't sound like their sex changes had anything to do with any kind of a screwed up family past. I know this is TexAgs, and we're all supposed to think stuff like this is disgusting, or make fun of people like this, or believe that people like this can only make decisions like this because of a messed up past, but that really doesn't seem to be this case here.

What I do find surprising is the type of guys they seemed to be never really pointed to this lifestyle. At least least from my limited view, they didn't check any of the typical boxes. They were the bro-iest of bros from Chicago. They literally owned a construction company before getting into movies, and refused to shoot the first Matrix movie during Bulls playoffs games in '98 (Jordan's last run), which they put in their contract had to be broadcast via satellite into their trailer on set in Australia.

Around the time of Reloaded, though, there was this huge Rolling Stone story about all the weird sh*t they got deep into after the first Matrix movie; S&M dungeons, having trans partners, etc. It sounds like the success of that first movie completely screwed with their heads, and whatever tendencies they did have were then able to be fully explored and realized with all the money and success they gained. Add that to the fact that they were hardcore into philosophy, identity constructs, etc., and I can at least maybe see how they got to this point by embracing what they believe to be their own, inner "truths" rather than being molested as kids or whatever.

I know we're all supposed to be cool with trans things these days, and I guess grown folks can do whatever they want, but that stuff's weird, man.

Saw it when I was 20 with my brother because we had heard so much hype about it from friends. Went in thinking, it can't possibly be as awesome as they made it out to be and came away thinking our friends didn't hype it enough. Like someone said on here, it was one of the very few movies I came out seeing the world a little differently.

I remember thinking, this must have been what it felt like for all the people that saw Star Wars for the first time when it came out.

Reloaded I was not really disappointed with, I really liked it. Revolutions, I wish they would just scrap and remake a new final movie.

Really got into Animatrix as well.

I'm not one that really enjoys RPG games, especially MMORPGs but I fell in love with Matrix Online the second I got into the beta for it. That game, I'm ashamed to say, ruled my life for close to a year or more, but I find it hard to regret it because it was just a once in a lifetime thing that I don't think can ever be reproduced in a game world. Being part of the actual cannon of one of your favorite movies of all time and the way it existed for that year or so before Sony f'ed it up, is something I enjoy remembering.

Yep. Love it and I'm not into anime.

Haven't watched the dvd in years, but I recall my favorites being the backstory of how the machines rose up, the one with about the athlete, and the one where kids stumble on a glitch in the matrix.

Good thread, and a seminal movie-going moment for me. Specifically, the ending. When the Matrix freezes, Neo is on the phone talking to the audience, he hangs up and RATM's aptly named "Wake Up" kicks on, followed by Neo flying away. I remember walking out of that theater and into the parking lot, fully convinced for about 5-7 seconds that there was a chance I could fly away if I truly set my mind to it. Everything about that movie is perfection. Blew my mind completely.

It's funny to think of all the actors rumored (true or otherwise) for Neo, and what that movie would have looked like without Keanu Reeves.

- Johnny Depp
- Leo DiCaprio
- David Duchovny
- Val Kilmer
- Brad Pitt
- Will Smith

I think Kilmer could have killed it. That was right after The Saint, I think. I cannot even imagine any of those dudes in the role though, really. It's such an iconic Keanu Reeves role that my mind cannot conceive it with someone like Johnny Depp.

Val Kilmer was up for Morpheus, not Neo. The pair that apparently came the closest to happening was Will Smith as Neo, with Kilmer as his Morpheus, which could have been pretty cool. That said, at one of the meetings with Kilmer, he ended up pitching to the Wachowskis why Morpheus should be the lead, not Neo, and that's when they knew he wasn't right. As for everyone else, after all of those names passed, they even went to Sandra Bullock for Neo, as they were in desperate need of *any* A-list star at the time. Once she passed, the budget was reworked a bit, and that's when they landed on Reeves/Fishburne.

Just re-watched the trilogy in honor of this thread.

The Matrix is still an undeniable masterpiece. It absolutely holds up and the Morpheus rescue is still one of the best action sequences ever filmed. Top ten all time movie for me.

What surprised me was the 2nd and 3rd movies. I remember kind of liking 2 and thinking 3 was a steaming pile. Upon re-watch I kind of hated 2 but thought 3 was actually pretty solid. The Zion scenes in particular were stronger than I remember them being.

Anyway, thanks to whomever started the thread - was fun to revisit these movies

Here's the entire chapter on The Matrix from Brian Raftery's Best. Movie. Year. Ever. book, which hit last month and chronicles what an insane year 1999 was for movies. The book itself is a fantastic read, and everything from my above post + a lot more can be found in this chapter...

I love reading behind the scenes stories, or how they made it for movies. Shows can be interesting too, but more for their commentary on DVDs(do they even do that anymore) Scrubs had excellent commentary where they would talk how or why they chose to do a certain scene.

My only criticism of it is that it would have been much better with a big budget. I feel the same about Boondock Saints and El Mariachi (which was rectified with Desperado, Boondock Saints 2 just sucked) I get annoyed at obviously low budget action movies.

Walked in never having heard anything. Buddy and me walked out 'thar was actually pretty damned good'

Then it blew up

Enjoyed the 2nd. Really not the 3rd.

Still have no idea on some plot points.

As stated above, his mind was mixed with the source and with smith's code. He could wireless tap into that code to control things in the Matrix while outside of it.

Agent smiths code took over the human mind. If technology exists to directly interlink code with our brain's electronics ,then the brain can also be manipulated and overwritten.

cbr said:

What is deal with being locked in train station

It was the train station built by the Merovengian's Trainman as a portal for machines to the real world. It is how the Merovengian smuggled programs in and out, like the program family that was smuggling their program daughter to the Oracle. Neo got into the Matrix without being hooked up physically through this portal. But since the Trainman created it, only he controlled access from it to the Matrix..

Like shown with the program family wanting to save their program daughter, and with Neo sacrificing himself not just for humans but for machines, the machines began to understand love. Love is what accomplished any big plot point in the series.

The machines start to understand love, and therefor respect and honor, thanks to Neo.

This is a big reason why I liked the Matrix Online game. It built out this framework even more and into a post Neo Matrix and real world. You had good and bad machines and good and bad humans.

thanks for the reply!!! appreciate it. still not sure i get the 'wireless' leap from brain to machine.

the show spelled out that's what it was, but not sure i understand it - why are programs going into the real world? does this mean i guess that the programs running the machines in the real world create the programs intended to run the matrix, and this is how they upload them into the matrix?

that makes some sense - i guess its in a different code than the human brain and the matrix so neo doesnt have any interface? i guess i still dont get how he got trapped there.
