You realize that's EXACTLY what the first movie was, right? "Unplugging," being your "true" self, etc... it's packed with transgender themes, albeit somewhat coyly.
Sigh.

How did I know TCCT was going to preach over that comment?

Yes, I realize that if you really stretch it out, and especially if you consider it in the context of what we know about the Wachowskis today, then there are "transgendered" themese throughout the first movie. I can honestly say, however, that I don't think anybody on this thread was really thinking about transgenderism when they left the theater after seeing the first movie.

Obviously, if they keep it like the first movie, then I don't have a problem with it. Sense8 explored similar themes, it involved eight people throughout the world who could all sense and communicate with each other no matter where they were. Out of those eight people, like half of them or something were transgendered or gay. Out of those that were not gay when the series started, several of them ended up becoming either gay or bisexual.

It was a cool concept and I enjoyed the first several episodes, but when it became obvious that it was going to be overly fixated on sexuality I quickly lost interest.

It's just not a theme that interests me or a lot of people, and if that's the way that they go with the Matrix 4, it's going to bomb.
While the series definitely touched on LGBT themes, this isn't at all accurate.

Of the main characters one character was a transgendered lesbian, one guy was gay. All the rest of the main characters were straight.

There was one weird dream sequence where errrybody was getting it on, but your general observation is just not true.
I may have details wrong. I know there was the transgendered lead and the in-the closet movie star guy. I also remember it featuring a graphic scene of woman screwing the transgendered lead (who was a man who became a woman) with a dildo. Then an orgy scene with a lot of the "straight" characters having same sex sex (probably dream sequence you are referring to).

Regardless, it was too much for me. Cool concept. Terrible execution.

If you could instantly "download" one single skill / trade / martial art into your brain, Matrix-style, what would it be?

Guitar for me. I used to play as a teenager and was a solid enough player, but I seemed to always hit a wall and could never get to the next level. Maybe I just didn't have enough dedication to really get good.

If I could instantly become as good as a Frusciante, John Mayer, Jack White, etc, that's what I'd do.

for my passion - drumming like Neal Peart, John Bonham, Ginger Baker, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Keith Moon and Stewart Copeland all combined.

logically - sling a football like Joe Montana, Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Dan Marino, Peyton Manning and John Elway plus the wheels and instincts of JFF in his prime.

If you're speaking logically, a successful MLB career is more desirable than an NFL one.

Yeah point taken. but I prefer football. I'd rather be a football god.

Matrix was great. But this particular "move" is one of the most laughable moments in film:

Life's an endless party, not a punch card.

Just finished my rewatch.

Overall, it REALLY holds up. The VFX feel a fair dated in spots, but what they were doing was so cutting edge it still feels really great overall. The bullet time effect in particular is just so well used, every time it comes up it just feels right. This one of those films that's just so well crafted, so much attention to detail on every shot and done with great taste. The art direction is still amazing, little things like the car they drive in the real world and the wardrobe choices still just feel so damn COOL.

My only big nitpick is the Neo's first jump scene. It's immediately after Neo and Morpheus' dojo fight, which was just beautifully shot and choreographed, and it just feels a little cheesy. Neo's acting is a bit forced and his flaily jump seems contextually too cartoony compared to the rest of the film.

Outside of that though...wow. The dialogue is still great and the action set pieces are outstanding. The subway fight is as good as you remember, and the entire last act is just borderline perfect. The soundtrack is also still fantastic.

Definitely a classic.

I think that jump scene was purely to bring Neo figuratively (and literally) back down to earth on being the one.

It left some doubt so he wasn't too OP too soon.

I'm fine with the scene itself, the acting and the way he impacts after the jump just feel kind of cheesy. But it was one of the very few things that felt dated in the entire film.

Have been listening to a 3-part podcast called "Quentin Tarantino's Feature Presentation", and in the third episode, QT opens it up by talking about going to see The Matrix at the Chinese Theater on opening night, with a very electric/excited crowd that had no idea what it was going to see.

Cool little thing to listen to, if you're interested.

I'm in Houston and there isn't one near me. All the AMC theaters are out in the sticks.

I'm excited this is out because I have been wanting to see it again recently but more importantly I was wanting to show it to my son for the first time so we are going to see it Sunday on a Dolby screen and I hope it blows our socks off! I'm anxious to see what he thinks about it. He saw the trailer and said "yeah it looks cool."

My 14 year old mind was so blown the first time I saw it; I can't even imagine what it would have been like to watch it stoned.

Still the greatest action movie ever made.

I hadn't seen it in full again in over a decade and every beat is just perfect. It really is a miracle of a movie, and a classic in every sense of the word. Twenty years later, the audience was still whooping and laughing at all the right parts, and I had a smile on my face the entire time.

That, Dolby Cinema is the next best thing to IMAX and may even rival it in certain ways. I've seen maybe three movies in Dolby Cinema before, but not only is this the best this movie has ever looked, I seriously think they amped up the sound like never before, in the best way. ATM1876 was right; the seats literally rumbled from the bass and it was amazing. I've never felt a movie like this before. My theater was sold out, and the two showings I checked tomorrow night almost were as well. Just a huge crowd in the lobby, which was so cool to see. Announcing the fourth movie in the lead up to this was a stroke of genius. I don't care what anyone says, or that the Wachowskis haven't come close since - I'm now more excited than ever to return to this world. Bring it on.

Still an awesome movie.

Picture quality was superb in Dolby. The vibration in the seats was really cool and made the whole thing better.

Yeah, at least at mine. And that screen is usually "themed" with whatever movie is playing.

I just read through the thread and figured i would post this article i read way back in the day. I love these movies for many reasons, but never really understood most of the symbolism. This article does a great job of explaining some wonderful aspects to the storyline. There is another article from the same guy that breaks down the second movie, and is just about as good. This one just ties it all together in a big picture sense. I'd read this one first, and if you like it check out the one for movie #2.

I dont agree with everything he says, but he certainly opened my eyes. This is a fantastic read for anyone that enjoyed these movies. I promise you will see them differently after reading this!
