We saw Jurassic World tonight and both liked it. I thought it was a fun ride at the movies seeing dinosaurs. No it wasn't the original but it was far from when I've seen folks say "worst movie EVER." I put it on par with Jurassic Park III and maybe Dominion. I like all the JP movies and liked Lost World but let's not forget it even had gymnastics girl knock a raptor out a window so they have ALL had dumb stuff in them lol. But we enjoyed the movie.

Not the worst movie I've seen, but not great either. It was a retread of the original JP without the charm. Reminds me of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Could have been called "The Dinos Awaken".

Movie opens with an accident and worker getting killed.
Then we're introduced to the main characters. Who are approached by the corporation character and invited on their dino adventure. After saying no, they agree to go once offered more money.
Once we get to the island we're introduced to a set of kids.
Then everything goes bad.
A bunch of sidekick characters die.
We get a heartfelt moment of seeing how beautiful the sauropods are.
There's a t-Rex chase.
Our characters split up into different groups before being reunited.
There's a suspenseful scene of medium sized dinos stalking the kids in a building as they hide behind shelves.
Right as raptors are pouncing on a character, a bigger dinosaur comes and saves them.
The main characters all make it out.
End scene of them leaving the island peacefully and staring at dolphins instead of pelicans as John Williams softly plays in the background.

Not the worst movie ever, but it's basically the same movie from 30 years ago.

And it's a good thing the mosasaur(they're not dinosaurs), that had stalked both other boats to come to the island, was off napping or something when they were leaving.

Honestly anything would have been better than Insect World: Dominion

I saw it last night, I'll give it a 7/10. Good dino popcorn flick, some nice moments, I thought ScarJo had a daytime soap TV level performance, Mahershala and the main scientist dude did well. Lincoln lawyer dad wasn't bad either

Agree to all of this.

Over all I thought it was a fun flick. Thought the Trex and Quetzalcoatlus had some good showings.

My rankings are: Jp1 still untouchable, jw1, jp3 and JWR, JP2, then a huge gap to jw2, then a massive gap to jw3.

Saw it in a packed Screen X theater without reading any reviews. Solid summer fun. Definitely a monster movie. I had low expectations, and it exceeded them. I think I'd put it below JP1 and JW1. Above JW2 and JP3.

To be fair for just the 3-day weekend, $80M is a pretty weak opening for a Jurassic movie. Doesn't help it's not in any IMAX theaters due to F1 and Superman comes out next weekend.

Not that that movie is gonna fare particularly well either but it's definitely a lot of overlap in target demo.

Weirdly I get the feeling FF is gonna underperform as well.

It feels like the summer box office in general has been pretty weak this year.

It had some cool moments.

I wish it leaned more into the scary/horror side of it.

Really stupid movie, I'm getting tired of the "40 year old actress is actually special forces delta force triple canopy who has to do one last job so she can retire"

Was slightly entertaining though, the cgi was good. The character arc for the boyfriend of the boat family's eldest daughter was hilariously compressed.

Give me Scarlett Johansson to look at any day over your stereotypical special forces dude. I can suspend disbelief if it means I get to watch a beautiful woman play the role. I don't think there's a political angle to her casting, it's just an entertainment value thing.

FWIW, my 19 year old and some friends tried to go last night and everything was sold out unless you wanted to sit in the front rows.

We looked at going this afternoon, same thing. Seems to be picking up steam.

We saw it and I'm not surprised it's selling out. It's "fine," and every bit as enjoyable as many of the top box office performers of the last couple years. It's not great cinema and largely forgettable in the long run, but it had a few good suspenseful scenes and great CGI. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen.

By the way…

Having read this thread I went into it thinking about this egregious Altoids product placement scene, like Scarjo was firing Altoids out of her snizz or something, and it was a nothing burger. Just like a couple 5 second mildly humorous scenes. And the Delores tweet being a spoiler? WTF is that poster smoking?

You couldn't have handled that anyway. You were closing your eyes at the DRex.

NGL, I half thought the "Dolores was the GOAT" comment meant that Dolores was going to be used as Trex bait at some point, which seemed like a very dark direction. Glad that turned out to not be true.

Was I the only one who thought the D Rex was just nasty looking? Not scary, just the Hills have Eyes gross? I guess we can look forward to the sequel where we find out how they created a TRex/Xenomorph.

So, story time. When my son was about 7 or 8 years old, my wife and I decided he was old enough to watch Jurassic Park. My daughter was only 4, though, so we decided she was too young. We waited until she was asleep and then pulled up JP. My son was kind of enjoying it, but also got pretty scared during the TRex scene. Then comes the part where the Trex eats Gennaro on the toilet, and we hear a loud scream from behind us... "YES!!!!!!!". My daughter had snuck out of her room and was watching from the hall, and she absolutely loved it. Almost ten years later and has seen all the movies, read the book multiple times, and loves to collect fossils. She even got a dinosaur tooth as a gift from her aunt.

Anyways, long story short, my daughter and I are both 100% in for this, and we will both be rooting for the dinosaurs!

My daughter and I were in Utah last weekend, so we couldn't make opening night, but we finally got to the theater today. We both enjoyed it, but also agreed that not enough people got eaten. I'm guessing they wrote the script over a lunch break, and neither of us liked the D-Rex. She thought it looked like they merged the DNA with Megamind. I thought it looked like a Xenomorph. Still, though, it was a fun time.

The Lost World had a pretty amazing ensemble cast from some great movies.

Private Cowboy from Full Metal Jacket
Kobayashi from the Usual Suspects
Ian freakin Malcolm from… well you know
Trent Walker from Swingers
That crabby ER doc from The Fugitive
Grimsrud from Fargo

$60 MILLION less on opening weekend than Fallen Kingdom and Dominion.

But hey, let's not bury the lede that expectations were so low, that outperforming them isn't impressive.

Who ****ing cares?

It's the highest-grossing opening of the year. Which, for the purposes of our bet, is all that matters.

Otherwise, why are you so obsessively against this movie's monetary success?
20ag07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Domestically (as we decided), it's only the 3rd best opening of this year.

And we all know it's gonna fall harder than a rock next week.

You're supposed to be smarter than to get trapped into Universal's press.

But again- had to repost random tweets from 4 different places.

It's only the third best "opening weekend" because it opened on a Wednesday and not a Friday. Also, I posted multiple tweets, as always, because they each provided different context. Not to obsessively try and convince people of an argument. That's your department.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
No- it's the 3rd best opening 5 Day in 2025 domestically.

Keep doing some mental gymnastics and re-post some more incessant/inaccurate tweets.

I'll double down that day 6 and 7 don't beat Minecraft/Lilo to give you the week you appeared to be hoping.

I'm not "hoping" for anything. I can afford to pay our bet. I could not care less if I lose. You're the one nitpicking/being borderline psychotic over the box office and the movie in general.

Weird take to have such a rooting interest in this movie failing. Did ScarJo steal Colin Jost from you or something?

Just got back, thought it was pretty solid. I love BDH for her Star Wars directing, but ScarJo as a major elevation of eye candy. She didn't seem to do very much once they were the island other than switch her moral compass, but I didn't exactly buy a ticket for character development.

Positives -
I really appreciate them showing some background dinos in most scenes that aren't trying to kill them, just there because it's an island full of dinosaurs and you have a budget, so use it.

Liked the Crichton Middle School sign easter egg on the school bus in the traffic jam scene with the big dino in NYC.

Marshela Ali always solid even without much to do he still makes a character his own. Made me feel bad about Blade still staggering along. He'd be phenomenal.

Gripes -
My buddy and I agreed that out of all the nitpicks, the one that really bugged us was the rocket shooting 200 feet in the air and then still landing on the boat that's zooming along 30-40 knots per hour.

No explanation of the secret ancient temple

Would have liked a lot more mutants in the opener - like actually moving around. Never saw the D-Rex in the light, hard to tell size or what the whole thing looked like.

Seems impossible the D-Rex would still be alive and have grown to those proportions without eating everything else on the island.

Utter Disbelief -
The gripe about the Altoids
The gripe about Dolores - that would have been akin to spoiling me that the first scene has a monkey in it.
That you'd walk out of this movie thinking it was some terrible thing.

Franchise Ranks - post Rebirth

1. JP 93
2. Jurassic World (sorry, I can't handle Mary Lou Malcolm)
3. The Lost World
4. Rebirth
5. Jurassic Park III - Sam Neil makes up for the existence of Tea Leoni
6. Dominion
7. Falle Kingdom
